The news of the week form Smoky Hill Rotary-Feb. 9
President Paul Urtz opened the Monday meeting with a very pleasant announcement. PP Joe Hughes and his wife Cindy welcomed a new addition to their family. Their new grandson, Beau Joseph Hammer (8 lbs, 8 oz)was born on Februay 6th. Joe and Cindy’s daughter, Kelly and little Beau are doing well. Congratulations to everyone!

Greg Lestikow, former Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar to Brazil, was our speaker on Monday. Greg went to Salvador da Bahiz, Brazil in 2007 on a 3 month Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship to study Portuguese. Greg is a near native Coloradan (he has livede 31 out of 32 years here), graduated from Regis High School and Colorado College. The opportunity to go to Brazil was a gift, for which he thanked everyone in Rotary for their support.

Charter Night has always been one of my favorite nights in the Rotary calendar. It is pure celebration. This year I had a great time, as usual. I went home and began thinking what I was going to write about Charter Night in the newsletter. The club was celebrating its 32nd birthday, so I did some reading on what it means in general for someone to turn 32. I ran across a study someone did a number of years ago exploring the common belief that, at some point in our lives, we turn into our parents. Most of the people surveyed believed that aphorism was in fact true. They were also asked at what age does that occur. Four out of ten people (by far the most common response) said it happened when they turned 32.
They've just about had it, with looking for their shadows. "And it's a once-a-year gig," complained a groundhog who wishes to remain anonymous. "What are we supposed to do for the other 364 days of the year?"
Last week's question: March Madness is upon us. One of the most famous plays in the history of the tournament is when Duke forward Christian Laetner caught a pass made from one end of the court to the other and then hit a jumper at the buzzer to beat Kentucky in a regional final. Who threw the pass to Laetner? Answer-Grant Hill.
This week's question: In 1949, the movie The Treasure of the Sierra Madre was awarded Oscars for best director and best supporting actor. The interesting thing is that the two so honored were father and son. Who won the two Oscars? Answer next week.
