If Not For Smoky Hill Rotary

Past President Betsy Jansen shared some excellent advice with us in her Invocation last week as we all search for ways to respond to the frightening and depressing headlines that seem to be telling us that Mother Nature is at war with us and we are at war with ourselves. Betsy encouraged us to redouble our efforts as Rotary members to support those in need in our community, to focus on what we can do and not be overwhelmed by events we can't control. That is the best antidote to "compassion fatigue." Of course, we all can write checks to support our favorite projects, and exhort our legislators to do their jobs, but I took Betsy's advice last week and tried to think outside the box with what actions I could take to make an immediate difference in someone's life.
I had a client who was willing to donate an almost new washer and dryer so I called Gateway Battered Women's Shelter. They were delighted to pick them up and give her a tax write off. So please keep them in mind, along with Comitis, Ronald McDonald House and Habitat for Humanity if you have big ticket items to recycle, including appliances, furniture, and clothing in good condition.
I also have a close friend who has been dealing with terrible pain from hip replacement surgery that went wrong. She has to wait three months before they can do more surgery to remedy the problem and she is very afraid that she is going to become addicted to the opiates her doctor has been prescribing. So I made my first trip ever to a pot dispensary to buy her some CBD patches, which have the marijuana derivative that relieves pain without making you high. So if you saw me coming out of Medicine Man on Havana last week, I wanted to let you know that being your President hasn't turned me into a pothead...yet!

Monday's Groaner or Grinner!

Here's a little story that Talee sent me called The Living Will.
   Last night my kids and I were sitting in the living room and I said to them,
"I never want to be in a vegetative state dependent on some machine and fluids
from a bottle. If that ever happens, I am instructing you to just pull the plug."
    So they got up, unplugged my computer and threw out my wine!!!
    Where did I go wrong?

Susan Michalakes' Invocation

Susan gave us all "A Moment of Gratitude." She asked the assembled to turn to one another and mention something for which we were grateful. Your Editarian overheard thanks for the Hurricane sparing a couple of our Rotarians; Florida homes, a great Broncos win, good friends, good health, and a great vacation. Thanks for the moment, Susan!

Great Dinner at the Ronald McDonald House

PEv Talee was able to report on last Tuesday night's visit to the Ronald McDonald house. We had a full complement of "Mighty Chefs" serving up a great dinner of Teriyaki Chicken, Salad, and Dessert. Early reviews were BOFFO!

And, of course, we don't go to the Ronald McDonald House just to cook. Chief Dinner Chaplain Mark Rank shared a great story of hope and healing. He had dinner with the Father and successful heart transplant patient! Talk about challenges growing up!

Mark says, "It was very cool getting to listen to such a positive and hopeful story!"

The real Service Above Self is in the Listening!

District 5450 Club Training Workshop on Saturday

PEv Talee Crowe emphasized all of the Rotary Training available on Saturday at the Club Training Workshop. Your Editarian was a bit "slow of pencil" in writing everything down but did note that our Smoky Hill Budget has reimbursement for the training registration. Our own PP Hugh Radke will be leading the Foundation training seminar.

We no longer meet at the Summit...

Because The Summit will have a new name on Monday.

Shauna invited all of us to attend the Parking Lot Party to celebrate the Grand Opening of the New ((INSERT NEW NAME HERE))! Our Monday lunch home will have a new name come Monday! Try as your Editarian might, I was unable to peek under the poster paper at the front to be able to break the news of the new name. We will have to wait until Saturday or Monday to find out! Congratulations to the new owners of the restaurant! We have really noticed the changes and look forward to more success!

WHYHASN'THEBEENPRESIDENTYET Pat Pogue announced that PP Al Horton has scheduled a Habitat for Humanity Day for SHRC on October 21st! We will be doing some Critical Repairs in Globeville, so mark your calendars!

Sarge Paul also announced that it is Craig and Bev Essex's 40th Anniversary! Congratulations to the happy couple. There is no truth to the rumor that they were married at age 15, although they do look like there is no way they have been married for forty years!!!

Yum, Chocolate!

Our Speaker Monday was Cindy Santucci, Independent Curator for Mars Chocolate and the Cocoa Exchange.

Cindy's program was a hit from the outset as she brought samples of wonderful, and healthy, chocolate for us to taste as she described the differences between healthy chocolate, and, well, let's just say "other" chocolate. We learned that chocolate is a fruit and that it is picked in beans that have pods and the pods have nibs inside. Cindy let us know that Mars Corporation has excellent environmental and social justice policies and goals as well as providing 100% REAL chocolate.

We were treated to 5 different samples:

Cinnamon dusted cocoa

Dark chocolate covered almond

Dark chocolate covered espresso

Milk chocolate butterscotch bites

A chunk of Aztec Slab chocolate

Wow, this chocolate lover had a great time, and judging by the interest at the samples table, a lot of us really enjoyed the chocolate. Cindy does tastings, wine and chocolate pairings (now we are really talking!) and sales.
