2018-19 President & PDG Talee Crowe
NEW MEMBERS IN ATTENDANCE … Following their induction last week, President Talee Crowe acknowledged the attendance of new members Jacquie Gallo and Tim Swenson from the podium. Not sure about this but so far they are showing signs of having perfect attendance. If they keep this, up PP Jim Wingert's perfect of attendance record of something in the vicinity of 58 years may be in jeopardy!

SMOKY HILL ROTARY'S
9th ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT … Friday, August 2nd!
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD DAY has been confirmed and scheduled for Saturday, May 4th at a home repair site located at 5015 Fillmore St, Denver, 80216 from 9am to 4:30pm according to PP Al Horton. Volunteer Rotarians must register online at least two weeks in advance (by April 19th) by visiting http://vhub.at/smhrotary. Registering ensures you will accept the waiver, receive information about the day including what to bring, and the location of the project. Habitat has five (5) spots reserved for Smoky Hill - we will be allowed to fill any unfilled spots two weeks before the build day and if we have more volunteers than spots reserved, you will be able to sign up on a waitlist through the link above. No prior construction experience is required!
SMOKY HILL ROTARVARIETY OF NEWS … President Talee shared some sad news that Fran Webster passed away a few days ago after spending the last four months in a nursing home. If you would like to send a card to Fran's wife, Jenabel, her address is 9150 E. Center Avenue, Apt 9C, Denver, CO 80247. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jenabel and the rest of Fran's family.
There will be a social gathering at the home of PP Jim & Judy Suss on May 4, 2019 ("Cuatro de Mayo"). More information will be forthcoming!
Timothy Taravella from the Gateway Rotary Club visited our club and they are looking for some more host families for the Rotary Youth Exchange program. If you are interested in hosting a student in our area, talk with Prez Talee who can connect you with Tim.
There is a club board meeting next week on Thursday, April 18.
President Talee is attending a Rotary Major Donor dinner this week. There are several levels of recognition (and levels within each recognition) for donations to Rotary International: Paul Harris Fellows ($1,000 and multiples of $1,000 thereafter); Bequest Society Member ($10,000 or more via your estate plans); Major Donor (cumulative cash donations of $10,000 or more) and the Arch Klumph Society (cumulative cash donations of $250,000 or more)!

In the invocation, PP Joe Hughes mentioned The Masters golf tournament which takes place this week. It is, in my humble opinion, the most prestigious of all tournaments played on U.S. soil, on one of the most difficult and exceptionally beautiful golf courses in the country, other than, of course, the Smoky Hill Rotary golf tournament at CommonGround G.C.! My mother was an avid golfer her entire life (5 holes in one and several City of Longmont & Loveland Championships!). She passed away in March 2015 and one month later I was very fortunate to attend The Masters with her … at least part of her … part of her ashes in a small container in my pocket. There is a lot of security at The Masters so with my right arm I held the container close to my right hip and tried to discretely scatter the ashes as I walked down the first fairway of Augusta National. Unfortunately, there was a breeze and some ashes ended up on my shorts, right leg and ankle! Looked like I fell on my side into a sand trap! She is probably still laughing!
THIS WEEK'S THOUGHT … "Be the person who cares. Be the person who makes an effort - who loves without hesitation. Be the person who makes people feel seen. There is nothing stronger than someone who continues to stay soft in a world that hasn't always been kind to them."
THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM
Sue Howk is a Registered Dietitian and the Community Dietitian for the Tri-County Health Department. Sue has a B.S. degree in Dietitics from Central Michigan University and provides community classes and health fair seminars on good nutrition. Sue emphasized the ChooseMyPlate.gov approach to a healthy diet. MyPlate covers all food groups in smaller portions. The 5 food groups on MyPlate are Vegetables, Fruits, Protein, Whole Grains and Dairy. Make half your plate vegetables and fruit and the other half grains (preferably whole grains) and protein. Vegetables provide vitamins, minerals, vital nutrients and fiber to keep your body healthy. Eat your vegies in a variety of colors - white (cauliflower), purple (eggplant), green (broccoli), orange (sweet potatoes) and red (tomatoes).
Fruit is a "gold mine" of good nutrition low in fat, sodium and calories. Just like vegies, eat fruit in a variety of colors: purple (blueberries), green (kiwi), yellow (mango) and red (raspberries).
Whole grains consist of three parts: the bran, the germ and the endosperm. Eating whole grains will help with weight management and maintain a healthy digestive system. Whole grains include millet, barley, oats, wild rice, quinoa, brown rice and rye.
You can get protein from animals (beef, pork, poultry, seafood, eggs) and from plants (beans, peas, nuts and seeds). Adults should eat 5 to 7 ounces of protein each day (a piece of meat about the size of your palm for animal based protein). It is best to get your protein from a variety of both plant and animal based products.
Dairy is rich in calcium, vitamin D, potassium and protein and important for building strong bones and teeth. If you consume alternatives to milk products like soy or almond milk, make sure they are brands fortified with calcium and vitamin D. Adults should consume 3 cups of dairy each day.
The FDA has finalized new Nutrition Fact labels for packaged goods that will make it easier for you to make informed food choices supporting a healthy diet. A few of the changes: "Calories" is now larger and bolder, "Added Sugars" in grams and as a percent Daily Value (%DV) is now required on the label and the list of nutrients that are required or permitted on the label have been updated.
Snack Smart! Snack on fruits and vegetables, don't let yourself get too hungry, don't drink your calories, address your stress and don't be too hard on yourself!
