Our last meeting was an offsite visit to the vegan restaurant GLADYS located in the Edgewater Public Market organized by Susan Michalakes. If you did not attend, you missed one of the best offsites Smoky Hill Rotary Club has ever had. Ten Rotarians and guests were treated to wonderful food, expert commentary on the dishes, and great fellowship. I had never eaten at a vegan restaurant but was curious going in. The first course was a Caesar’s salad that tasted as good as any I have ever had and roasted Brussel’s sprouts in an amazing sauce. Now understand first, I am not a big fan of Brussel’s sprouts, but this dish was amazing! The topper was a completely vegan Reuben sandwich. I am a fan of Reubens so my standards are high and this one was really good.
Our host at Gladys was Javier Roeth. He gave a running commentary on each dish, its history at the restaurant, its ingredients and how it was prepared. The only thing I can compare it to in my experience is a wine tasting hosted by an expert. I cannot recommend Gladys more highly. Susan, thank you for one great time. It was a blast!
(note on pictures-one thing you can count on is if the picture is bad, I took it. If it is good, Linda probably took it. These are all mine. Mea culpa to the attendees on the right side of the table.)
Special Program
March 23rd meeting will be a speaker from the “We Don’t Waste” program which rescues surplus, high quality food from the food industry and redistributes it to food pantries, soup kitchens, and schools. This could be a new, exciting project for Smoky Hill.
Paul Harris Fellow Recognition
Don't forget that Smoky Hill Rotary will be honoring non-Rotarians whose life and service reflect the values of Rotary by making them Paul Harris Fellows utilizing individual and club points and then honored at a special lunch on May 11.
