ASSISTANT GOVERNOR KAY DAVIS … honored us with her presence at lunch this week. President Talee Crowe welcomed her. Kay is a member of the Aurora Gateway Rotary Club. Kay said a few words and most notably: "This (Smoky Hill) is a great club!". She also said Talee has her phone number if anyone in the club needs her assistance for anything.
CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY … PP Darryl Harvey and PP Al Horton are heading up the annual Valentine's Day arts & craft projects and face painting for children and their families at the Children's Hospital on the Anschutz Medical campus. It is being held on Tuedsday, February 12th from 6PM to 8PM. Volunteers need to be there at 5:30PM and please kindly do not attend if you have, or have any signs of having a cold, the flu or any other illness (the hospital will reject your germs!). Contact Darryl or Al if you have any questions.
MAJOR DONORS … Smoky Hill Rotary has seven (7) major donors and this week Foundation Chair PP Lloyd Gottman recognized Pauline Ayers-Menk as a major donor and awarded her with one of those crystals other major donors received on Charter Night. Here Pauline is shaking Lloyd's hand after receiving her award. Thanks and congratulations to Pauline! President Talee Crowe also acknowledged and thanked Pauline for filling in as an interim secretary until a replacement for Susan Michalakes can be found. Everyone is officially on notice that Talee might be knocking on your door seeking a Secretary!
[Editarian Note: Wasn't going to mention it but with the small chance you noticed, the picture is not actually that of Pauline. Pauline requested no picture of her in the newsletter. Rather than use the power of the pen and publish 17 pics of Pauline, her request has been honored - she was cropped out of the pic with Lloyd, but it didn't seem right to leave Lloyd standing there alone. It was no easy task to find another Rotarian on short notice following our meeting, but this woman from the Rotary Club of Google, CA was in town and kind enough to shake Lloyd's hand for the photo op even though she had never met him until this week! She asked to remain anonymous and has contracted her uncle, PP Terry "Don" Remigio to confiscate Pauline's crystal in exchange for her services.]

SMOKY HILL ROTARVARIETY OF NEWS… A reminder from President Talee Crowe: the next offsite visit will be March 18 at the Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center! We will enjoy lunch at the resort and see things the general public will never see as hotel guests. Get this one on your calendar!
PE Hugh Radke attended the President's Foundation dinner a couple of weeks ago with RI President Barry Rassin. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation recently wrote a check for $100 Million to Polio Plus and they have extended their contributions through 2013 since the battle to end Polio is not over. There are still cases of Polio in Pakistan and Afghanistan and it is very difficult to get the vaccine into those countries. Rotary has asked for permission to enter the countries solely for the purpose of administering the Polio vaccine.
The club is very close to receiving this year's Presidential Citation! The next Smoky Hill Rotary Club board meeting is Thursday, February 28th. The club received a nice thank you note from John & Jessa Crisp, the President & Executive Director of BridgeHope in part saying we did not receive a benefit from our $500 contribution to the organization other than the "joy of giving to an organization that works to foster resources and restoration for survivors of exploitation."
The Rangeview High School Interact Club is conducting their fundraising event for the Red-tailed Hawk Inclusive Playground project for the Aurora Rotary Club. We are supposed to receive an email (no email to date) regarding the details of this event. Saturday, Feb 8 was the date heard but Saturday is Feb 9 so not sure if it is on the 8th or the 9th. If you have not received an email and interested in attending, contact Prez Talee or PE Hugh Radke for details.
THIS WEEK'S THOUGHT …“To strengthen the muscles of your heart, the best exercise is lifting someone else's spirit whenever you can.”
THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM
Jen Wilking is a physical therapist and a Yoga instructor and spoke on Yoga for Healthy Aging for the Body, Mind and Spirit. Breathing is the foundation to everything done in Yoga as is looking inward or Namaste, the belief there is a divine spark within each of us that is located in the heart chakra. The benefits from Yoga include balance, strength, flexibility, relief from stress, anxiety & depression, pain management, better sleep and quality of life. The Yogic philosophy facilitates transformation by providing tools and perspective for handling the circumstances of everyday life.
Yoga can also help with respiratory functions, stiffness, sensory awareness, movement transitions, static and dynamic balance, posture, coodination, cardiovascular fitness, focus and concentration and energy levels just to name some of the benefits. A typical Yoga class begins with mindfulness and then moves into breathing, movements, strength, balance, flexibility and concludes with relaxation.
Yoga will strengthen your body, calm your mind and free your spirit. The body, mind and spirit overlap each other so as you perform, for example, physical postures, breathing techniques and balancing, you are integrating the benefits into the body, mind and spirit simultaneously. The body is the physical practice of challenging your balance, posture, spinal mobility and (graceful) movements. The mind is the mental practice of breathing, meditating and being mindful of your environment, etc. The spirit is connecting wisdom, peace, reflection, self-discovery, purpose and meaning in your life.
Jen works with the Vernon Physical Therapy & Wellness group providing individual and group sessions. Make sure you attend Yoga with qualified Yoga instructors (at least 200 hours of training or more) or Yoga Therapists which are more qualified than Yoga teachers.
