President Elect Dave Maxwell got his first taste of the podium Monday, filling in for President Paul Urtz. Dave did talk like he was taking the club out for a test drive, to see if he could exercise some sort of "escape clause" later.
Dave thanked everyone for their efforts on the golf tournament on Aug. 6, particularly since that money will fund his budget. PP Mark Johnson reported that the tournament was a big success, basically equaling last year's event, which was very successful. Last year's net income was $20,759. This year the total is $20,220, but there are still some moneys expected to come in. It also does not include the $600 from the live auction, nor the net raffle proceeds of $878. It also did not include the $50 from PP Jim Wingert from a live auction Monday for a left over gift certificate to Common Grounds. Congratulations to everyone in the club, but particularly to PP Joe Hughes and his Golf Committee. Great job!
PP Darryl Harvey reminded everyone that the Special Things For Special Kids shopping trip is this Saturday, Aug. 16, 8:45 am at the Walmart on Chambers and Parker Road. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

On Smoky Hill Road, go south. It meanders around a lot of new construction to Powhaton Road. Turn south (right) and go 1 mile to County Line Road. Turn east (left) on County Line Road, 1 mile, to Delbert Road, at Delbert Road turn south (right). Continue on Delbert Road to Sunset Drive, about 5.5 miles. Turn west (right) on Sunset Drive (private dirt road) and we are the 3rd house on the left on top of the hill. If you miss Sunset Drive and end up on Singing Hills Road, turn around!

From South Parker Road turn east (left) on Lincoln to Pine Street. Turn south (right) on Pine Street. Pine Street curves east and becomes Mainstreet and Mainstreet becomes East Parker Road continue for about 4.5 miles where East Parker Road dead ends at Delbert Road. Sergeant at Arms PP Gary Fletcher's WOW moment of the week involved the chocolate chip cookie. It was created by accident in 1930 at the Tollhouse Inn when the chocolate chips added to the cookie dough failed to completely melt into the rest of the cookie dough. The recipe was purchased the the Hershey's Company for a lifetime supply of chocolate. The picture above was of my cookie from Monday. I wanted a picture to illustrate this piece, so I dropped it onto the table. Before it hit the tablecloth, Gary had taken a bite out of it. For future reference, he's really quick for an old dude.
This week's tale of Smoky Hill Rotary is actually two tales, bound by the service this club has rendered to this community and the world since its inception. We were privilege to have as guests, two extraodinary young women.
The first was Hope Lowery, a participant this year at Young RYLA, sponsored by Smoky Hill Rotary. Hope learned trust in others and respect for them as well as herself. You can be a better person now, even if you will never be a perfect person. She said that she really hated public speaking, but Young RYLA helped by increasing her level of personal confidence. Based on her talk Monday, she learned very well. Thank you, Hope.
Our second guest was Saba Aidah, shown here with her father. Saba is the recipient of a Smoky Hill Rotary Foundation scholarship. She is doing very well in her studies. She is in here third year at Winter College studying biology.
The story of this club is the story of the people we serve. There are many such tales, and there will be many more not just in the years ahead, but in the weeks ahead. Hope and Saba make me proud to be a Smokin' Hill Rotarian.
Our speaker for this week was Greg Geesen, a corporate and business consultant and trainer, specializing in conflict resolution and work place intervention. Some highlights of Mr. Geesen's talk were:
Problems faced by business leaders come when a team breaks down, resulting in conflict. This is usually the result of of a failure of leadership. The manager of that area or team is not performing.
Greg first does an assessment of the organization being affected, then does a summary of his findings with recommendations. Only then will he come in to attempt a direct intervention. This saves time by identifying the real problem as opposed to the problem the people involved perceive.
He is often asked to come in and do some "team building". This is often just a cover up for the real problem, usually the ineffectiveness of the leader or leaders. Sometimes, the first decision is whether the leader in question is salvageable, or whether the damage has already been done. Sometimes, the solution is to cut the person loose.
Leadership problems usually consist of a combination of inconsistent leadership (this results in a breach of trust with the people, who no longer know what to expect), conflict avoidance (leader fails to deal with problems as the arise), poor communication, feedback only goes down but never up, micro-management, failure to ask for help, lack of group management skills, and multiple personalities by the leader.
Greg's solutions involve coaching the leader in a way that really changes their perceptions of their jobs-teach them to really change rather than just going through the motions to get past the training period. Leaders must be taught that purpose and passion are the foundation of real leadership. As such, they need to understand themselves, what their core values are, and then to reflect those in what they do.

Answer to last week's question: James Garner died recently. His first big role was as Brett Maverick in the TV series Maverick. After a contract dispute following the show's third season, Garner left the show. He was replace by Roger Moore, who played cousin Beau Maverick. Ironically, the role was first offered to then unknown British actor Sean Connery, be he turned it down. Moore, of course, later replaced Connery as James Bond.
This week's question: Robin Williams died this week. Though first known as a comedic genius, he was trained as a dramatic actor at Julliard. He was nominated for four Academy Awards, winning one Oscar. Can you name the four movies for which he was nominated? Answer next week.
