Smoky Hill Rotary Installation Banquet
SMOKY HILL ROTARY INSTALLATION BANQUET 2014

The passing of the Rotary torch is always a satisfying event, signifying both the promise that comes with new leadership and the satisfaction that comes from knowing that the past year has made lives better. On June 29, that torched passed from President Betsy Jansen to new President Paul Urtz. The event was held at the Valley Country Club, organized by Club Services Director Nancy Jones.

President Betsy had a great year with significant accomplishments in all of the areas of service. The 2013 Golf Fundraiser was the most successful golf event so far, allowing the club to provide water to people in Nepal, scholarships to students at Pickens Tech and Overland High School, refrigerators for Comitis Crisis Center residents, clothing for Century Elementary Students, food for needy families, and so much more. Betsy exercised her privilege as outgoing president to award President's Awards to three people who made her job easier and more effective:
  • Past District Governor Talee Crowe, who served as inspiration and confidant, as well as serving as the Club representative for the Area Meeting, a time consuming job that she did with her accustomed skill.
  • Past President Jeff Kaes who helped Betsy figure out what the job of president was all about, always responding quickly and positively and was always ready to provide ways to solve problems.
  • The third recipient was not present, so that award will be presented at the club meeting on July 28.
The big announcement of the evening is always the recipient of the Tschappat Award, which goes to the non-board member who had the strongest impact on the club during the previous year. It is Smoky Hill's equivalent of Rotarian of the Year. Again, the recipient was not present, so that award will be present at the July 28 meeting as well.

Secretary and Past President Bev Edwards presented perfect attendance awards to:  1 year-Darryl Harvey, Betsy Jansen, Hugh Radke, and Paul Urtz; 14 years-Craig Essex; 19 years-Bev Edwards and Gary Frisch; 23 years-Gary Fletcher; 26 years-Talee Crowe. The undefeated champion of perfect attendance was again Past President Jim Wingert with 29 years.

President Betsy was presented with a beautiful award honoring her outstanding leadership this past year by 2014-2015 President Paul Urtz. Paul was president in the year that Talee Crowe was District Governor, so much of his year went toward organizing District Conference that year. So, this is kind of a do-over year for Paul. Paul presented his board.
I am sure we are all excited to begin a new Rotary year with such capable leadership in place.
Once again, congratulations to Betsy for a great year, and to Paul for being selected by his Rotary peers to lead the Club into next year.

rotary theme
ROTARY INTERNATIONAL THEME-2014-15
RI President Gary C.K. Huang chose Light Up Rotary as his theme for 2014-15. Huang is urging club members to Light Up Rotary by hosting a Rotary Day in their community, continuing our fight against polio, and increasing club membership. "Light Up Rotary is more than our theme. It is how we make a difference — every day, in every club, and every country we serve." SHRC President Paul had some fun with where to put the emphasis in "Light Up Rotary", but, as he said, it is hard to argue with the goals it represents.

GOLF TOURNAMENT!!

The Smoky Hill Rotary Golf Fundraiser is almost on us. It will be held on August 6 at Common Grounds Golf Course. If this is news to you, I don't know what to say to you. Past President and Golf god Joe Hughes has certainly done his part to keep it in front of us. PP Gary Fletcher once told me that this is a service club, but service begins for this club with making sure our fundraiser is successful. It makes most of the rest of what we do possible. How can you serve? Recruit golfers; play yourself; seek out corporate sponsors and hole sponsors; become a sponsor yourself; work on the day of the event. I am sure I missed some ways, but you get the idea. The Golf Planning Committee has been working hard for many months. Now it comes down to each member doing his or her part.

club assembly
Club Assembly
President Paul Urtz has designated July 14 for a Club Assembly in place of our regular program. In an email, Paul said,
"We will be having a club assembly on Monday and I will be giving Nancy, Lee, Vlad, Pat and Al a few minutes each to talk about their committees and their plans for the year.  I will be asking every member of the club to sign up for at least one of these committees so they can help support you reaching your goals for this Rotary year. I would also like Hugh and Gary to say a few words about the RI and the SH Foundations and the importance of supporting those charities (and to encourage members to help you with what you do).

Mark, I thought you might want a moment to ask members to help you with ideas for club programs, and for what they like or don’t like.

Joe, you’ll be on for the golf tournament for you to talk about what we need done as we enter the home stretch."
So-Avenger (and Rotarians) Assemble!!!

TRIVIA
TRIVIA CORNER
As most of you know, I am fond of trivia. The more useless the information, the more likely I am to know it. I would like to start off with something different, though. I am very proud to serve as the editarian for this coming year. Smoky Hill has a long tradition of outstanding newletters. Three Smoky Hill editarians have been honored with the District 5450 Bemis Award for outstanding newsletter. Can you name all three? Answer next week.
