CLUB NEWS

SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN … to make Christmas brighter for students at Century Elementary School and the victims of domestic violence at Gateway Domestic Violence Services! Community Services Chair PP Darryl Harvey and Pat Pogue said there are a few kids names left (7 to be exact) who need someone to purchase gifts for them. Wrap your gift, attach the gift tag and bring it to the club's holiday party on December 1 (details below) or otherwise get it to Darryl by December 1. And there is still time to purchase $25 gift cards for Gateway and get them to Darryl in the next two weeks! Gift cards from grocery stores are preferable but you can also purchase cards from discount retailers such as Target or Kohl's.

HOLIDAY PARTY IS DRAWING NEARER … Saturday, December 1st beginning at 6pm at Talee's home located at 9006 E Evans Court, Denver, 80231. The club will provide wine, beer, soft drinks, etc. Each Rotarian is asked to bring either an appetizer (last names beginning with A-L) or a dessert (last names beginning with M-Z). Dress is holiday casual and since there is no cost to attend, you can buy some new threads to wear at the party! RSVP to the Evite you should have received from PP Terry Remigio but if you didn't receive it, contact Terry!

A SMOKY HILL ROTARY SATELLITE CLUB IS TAKING OFF … This was the great news shared by PP Joe Hughes at the Board Meeting last week! Sean Clancy, Scott Gilliland, Kyle Hammer and Shane Sumner, who are already official members of Smoky Hill Rotary Club, have decided to form the satellite club. Joe will let us know but believes their next meeting is Monday, December 10 at the View House beginning at 6pm. They plan to meet once a month. More details will be forthcoming. In the meantime, many thanks to Joe for his work on membership!

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE

… PP Betsy Jansen had sign up sheets on the tables for prepping and serving dinner at The Ronald McDonald House on Tuesday, December 4. Betsy needs at least 6-8 volunteers to help her out. Volunteers need to arrive at 4:15pm and be ready to serve dinner at 6pm.

NOVEMBER IS ROTARY FOUNDATION MONTH … Smoky Hill Rotary has donated over $350,000 to the Rotary Foundation, one of the top rated Foundations in the country, according to Foundation Chair PP Lloyd Gottman! Lloyd looked at the many ways the Foundation has used it's funding and Smoky Hill has participated in most of those causes including mosquito nets, Polio Plus, clean water, sewing machines, medical equipment, loans for microbusinesses and conflict training! Lloyd presented PP Betsy Jansen with her Paul Harris Fellow + 7 pin recognizing her for having given over $8,000 to the Rotary Foundation! Congratulations and thank you Betsy!

SMOKY HILL ROTARVARIETY OF NEWS … President Talee Crowe had several messages beginning with a very sad one … PP Bill Maclay's son, Todd, recently passed away after suffering from a chronic illness. Our thoughts and prayers reach out to Bill and Leigh. Following the successful sale of his business, Sgt at Arms PP Jim Suss will be spending the winter at his home in Florida, returning in April. PP Clay Fell has agreed to fill in for Jim as "Lieutenant" at Arms (Talee promoted him to an officer ranking). A reminder, you can eat for free at any of the other Aurora Rotary clubs under a reciprocal arrangement if you need to perform a make-up, etc. Hugh Radke will be putting together his board for next year and Talee asks that we consider his requests. Board positions are not large time commitments. The club would like to do at least one more offsite visit this Rotary year and needs help identifying prospective sites. If you have any ideas or suggestions for an offsite visit, please contact Vocational Chair Mark Rank.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! … Our good friend Barbara Fruitman with the Thanksgiving Basket program joined us for lunch and thanked the club for helping her program purchase $75 gift cards from King Soopers for 125 needy families! President Talee thanked her "family of Smoky Hill Rotary" for being an important part of her life! We are thankful to PP Clay Fell for serving as interim Lieutenant at Arms. PP Al Horton thanked the Lieutenant for the 'What's in the Sack' Thanksgiving lotto winnings … cranberries a

nd Cool Whip for the pies. Al is seen here vigorously shaking the Cool Whip looking like he is getting ready to ~~give it to~~ thank Clay! We give thanks that we are not turkeys, especially this time of year. Jim x 2 Snow Birds PP's Suss & Wingert are giving thanks for their Florida homes after seeing the Saturday temps in Denver drop into the 20's! Upon arriving and seeing those empty tab

letops, everyone gave thanks to the Bent Noodle for scrambling to put together a salad and pizza lunch! Everyone was thankful to see that even PDG, PP, Past Rotary Everything President Talee Crowe is capable of making a faux pas! We are thankful that spiders and snakes do not fly. PP Lloyd Gottman and PP Al Horton were thankful to Pat Pogue for bringing salad plates to their table. Thanks for Verizon Wireless customer service reps who can speak fluent English. Thanks to Community Services Chair PP Darryl Harvey and his committee for the opportunity to shop for school clothes and supplies for Century Elementary students! Thanks for the few extra pounds Thanksgiving puts on us, fat people are harder to kidnap. Thanks to International Chair PP Bev Edwards and her committee for arranging the Beius Romania medical equipment project!

Thanks to PP Betsy Jansen for organizing the dinners we serve at the Ronald McDonald House! PP Paul Urtz is thankful that his third cousin, Philadelphia Eagle tight end Zach Ertz, isn't coming for Thanksgiving, he is tired of Zach twisting his ears and saying "how ya doin little cous?" We give thanks to Golf Chair PP Gary Frisch and his committee for the annual golf tournament! Many thanks for the game of 'hide and go seek', it gives us 5 minutes of time to hide from the kids/grandkids and use the bathroom.

Susie Miller is the Talent Enhancement and Business Services Manager for ADWorks (Arapahoe/Douglas Workforce Center). Originally from Nebraska, Susie has a BA from California State University Los Angeles and moved to Denver in October 2015. With three locations including one in Castle Rock, ADWorks is the EHarmony of the business world and is not just for the unemployed. Employers (business customers) are just as important as job seeking customers because it connects opportunities with talent. At ww.connectingcolorado.com job seekers and employers can register and post a resume or register and post a job, respectively. It connects jobseekers to jobs.

ADWorks also provides training assistance to jobseekers needing skill attainment, offers layoff prevention services and connects qualified candidates to businesses. According to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, people using ADWorks in their job search earned an average of almost $16,000 more per year than those who did not (2014-2015 data).

The ADWorks resource center has computers, internet, printers, fax machines, job search resources and hiring events. Their workshops are practical, interactive classes to help you become the savviest candidate for the job. Core workshops include Career Kick Start, Resumes 1 & 2, Interviewing 1 & 2, Networking and Salary Negotiations. The Business & Assessment Center provides ProveIt! tests, Pre-GED, TABE and various career assessments. They also have specialized services for veterans, youth and back to work for ages 50+.

The Generations @Work program is focused on mature workers ages 40+ and the AARP Foundation Back to Work 50+ is for job seekers ages 50+ providing career counseling, job coaching and skills development. Their Adult/Dislocated Worker Program provides public assistance for low income earners, displaced home makers, those 55 or older, Native Americans, ex-offenders, those with disabilities and single parents.
