In the May 1 edition, there is an article that shows we can now download a mobile app for our phones that holds all the contact info for our club members. It's a great time saver for all of us, and I encourage you to use it.

In the June 1 newsletter, outgoing District Governor sums up his year and celebrates the achievements of District 5450, including the fact that it has raised $850,000 to eradicate polio and support other charitable projects. And he tells the moving story of how Rotary has made a huge difference in his life. Be sure to read it. And I know he would appreciate emails or letters that express our gratitude to him for his selfless service this year.
Monday's Grinner or Groaner
A mother and her newly engaged daughter were shopping for the daughter's wedding dress. The daughter says, "Mom, I'm starting to get nervous. Can you tell me what are the secrets to having a perfect marriage?"
The Mother replies, "Well, Sweetheart, there are 5 requirements. The first is you have to have a guy who will be your soulmate, who understands you and supports you emotionally. Second, you need to have a man who is financially stable and has a good job, so you won't have any troubles about money. Third, it's always good to have a fellow who is handy around the house and knows how to fix things. And fourth, make sure he is a good lover and knows how to satisfy you in that way, too."
The daughter says, "Okay, Mom. That all makes sense. So what is the 5th requirement?"
Mom gives her a wink and says, "The most important one is that you should never let these 4 men meet each other!"

PP/Secy Bev Edwards gave an update on our Global Grant for Beius, Romania's Hospital Urology Department. The Grant's funding goal is $117,000 and we have currently raised $78,000 with donations from individuals, Smoky Hill, other District 5450 clubs, and District and RI matching grant money. Clubs from Montenegro, Budapest, and Modesto, CA have contributed as well. With all the matching money, a donation of $1000 magically transforms itself with Rotary Math to $3500!
Individual donations can be made through the Smoky Hill Rotary Foundation, a 501 (c) 3 foundation. If you'd like to donate please contact PP Gary Frisch or Bev! I'm sure they will help you with the details!
President Nancy thanked PP Lloyd Gottmanand PP Jim Suss for greeting this morning! Our Invocation was presented by PP Al Horton who (surprise! surprise!) reflected on baseball. He did not mention one of my favorite Yogi Berra quotes, "Love is the most important thing in the world, but baseball is pretty good too."
President Nancy reminded everyone that there will be a club board meeting on Thursday, April 5, 5:30 PM at Sue Aubin's office. All are welcome to attend and see how the sausage is ground. If you go, stay for the after-board meeting at one the local watering holes. Easily the best part of the meeting. The District 5450 Bulletin is out and everyone should take a look. A lot of really good information. One item-April 13 is the last day to register your business in the District Business Directory. This promises to be a valuable tool in building those important business and Rotary connections. The District Conference is set for May 19 and 20. President Nancy would like to see a nice contingent from Smoky Hill attend, so go onto the District website and take a look. SHRC received a nice thank you note from Shelter Box for contributing the cost of a box. If you have not seen one of these, you really should. They are amazing! The amount life sustaining things included is inspiring. I do not know if there will be one at the District Conference this year, but there often is. Worth attending the conference just for that.
Sarg at Arms PPX2 Paul Urtz lamented to lack of birthdays and anniversaries this week to share. We all celebrated the fact that Paul did not have a joke to share.
With Grid Master PP Al Horton under the weather, his very able partner, Mary Kay Horton brought the grid and winning back to SHRC today. Sgt. @ Arms/PP Paul Urtz picked up the ball to announce the winners and distribute the prizes!
The 1st Quarter winner was (get this!) Kip Cranford, the Horton's son-in-law! Really? Good thing Al emailed out this photo of the grid on Saturday, a full day and a half before the big game. Kip won $50!
The 2nd Quarter winner was a blank so that prize was moved forward and added to the 3rd Quarter winner, the doubly lucky PP/Sec'y Bev Edwards, who won $100.
And the Final Score was also a blank, so a weighted drawing of participants was held. Sarge/Attorney Urtz brilliantly had our speaker, Beth, do the final drawing and PP Lloyd Gottman won the final $100.
The big winner? Our club pocketed $390 for the Community Service budget! Fun and easy. Thanks, Al, for putting this together!
Oh My! Sarge Paul was not yet done!
First, he thanked PPX2 Dr. Jeff Kaes for his (mine?) Invocation at Charter Night as Paul was busy--OK--he was very busy prior to a medical procedure that all 50-year-olds should have performed. Paul began to explain in painful detail about this procedure, an explanation which was rapidly--and appropriately--met with cries of, "TMI, TMI!"
Paul then attempted to run Roto Lotto with the (in)famous "What's in the Bag" gag that was popularized by a Sgt. @ Arms from way back in time who was Blonde and still has a big nose! Paul, just a hint. The gag works better if you start with the big money--"Big Money or what's in the bag?" then if the bag isn't chosen you go to the 2nd prize or "What's in the bag, ad nauseum until the 3 prizes and the bag have been given. Well, anyway, that's how I did it...back in the day!
But, hey, Paul got the job done and PP Betsy Jansen was the winner of a vintage, unworn, still has it's tags, SuperBowl XXXII ball cap when Elway and the Broncos beat the Packers. But Betsy is a Packers fan! Oh, the burn! Kudos to Betsy, she was a good sport and wore the hat at least for a moment for a picture!
President Nancy introduced her "little/youngest" sister, Beth Barela, Board Chairman for the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame (HoF). Beth had a career in Math and IT and now leads the 20 member Board for the HoF.
Nominations for new members of the HoF and voting come from the public. There are currently 152 inductees with 10 new inductees celebrated at a gala event on March 28th.
Beth shared this year's nominees' stories with us. They ranged from historical nominees, such as Mae Boettcher of the Boettcher Foundation and Ellis Meredith, a journalist and Women's Suffragist to modern nominees such as Susan Helms Lt. Gen. (Ret.) an astronaut and Gail Schoettler Ph.D., Colorado Lt. Governor and State Treasurer.
In addition, Rocky Mountain PBS is featuring HoF awardees on Thursday nights at 8:00 PM (and the following Friday morning at 1:30 am for you DVR users).
