After returning from travels representing our club in Budva, Montenegro, President Dave Maxwell thanked Past President II Paul Urtz and President Elect Denny Passantino for filling in for him.
President Dave and Past President Bev Edwards and spouse, Myles,(also representing our club) reported the success of their trip to Montenegro as to installing and dedicating hospital equipment, in conjunction with Assist International, 16 other Rotary Clubs from 6 countries, and the Rotary Club of Butva in a small, beautiful, mostly rural country that had, again, gained it's independence ten years ago. By the way they are holding the flag from the Rotary Club of Budva. PP Bev also mentioned that the below notice was prominently displayed throughout their travels in Montenegro. Notice the name of our club as "Smoking Hill Aurora, CO"
President Elect Denny has a few remarks for the coming year which are: 1. Just a reminder that July 1st is the cut-off date to order Rotary polo shirts for the upcoming golf tournament, which is customary, if not beneficial for this event. Please see Past President Clay Fell (cfell@fnf.com) if you are interested in purchasing a shirt. Note for new members - These shirts, which are embroidered with the Smoky Hill Rotary logo, can also be (usually are) worn for other Rotary events . \
2. Past President Terry Remigio has agreed to be Club Service Chair for the new year.
3. A request that each SHR member sign up for one committee, especially one that they are passionate about. Club Chairs and Club Assemblies will follow in July....see dates below.
Nancy Jones reminded club members of our Installation Dinner to be held Sunday evening, June 26, at Maggiano's Restaurant, 7401 South Clinton Street, 6:00 p.m. There will be a cash bar and members will be charged $33.50 with guests being charged $49.00 for the meal. A few years ago Past President II Jeff Kaes remarked that the Installation Dinner is one of the "must" events for a Smoky Hill Rotarian. That for the benefit of new members.
Past District Governor Talee Crowe acknowledged and thanked members who made the past Wednesday, Ronald MacDonald House Dinner Preparation. Some names I caught were Betsy, Darryl, Joe, Terry and spouse Linda, Mark Rank (ten thousand apologies for any name(s) not listed). Also, President Dave thanked Mark Rank for bringing the dessert for that dinner.

Former SHR member and a guest today, Len Brass of Aurora Gateway Club, brought Ding a visiting guest from Thailand. Ding is president of the 170 member Roteract club of southeast Thailand. Len also brought news that the Phamily Theatre group has set aside August 6th as Rotary night wherein half of the $50.00 tickets will go towards charities. Today's speaker was Pam Tomasovi and her helper and son, Brad, from Basket of Hope. Pam is the co-coordinator for the Denver area Basket of Hope, that was started in St. Louis, Missouri, over 20 years ago. The founder's daughter was diagnosed with cancer and spent some lengthy time in the hospital. Their experience was that outside the hospital no one was involved. Since getting professional sports figures involved it has grown to be one of their noted philanthropic causes. Pam stated that one of Basket of Hopes big events is Super Bowl week wherein deliveries are made by NFL players.
These Baskets are full of items for children to entertain or be entertained. The one that was displayed contained playing cards, jigsaw puzzle, note and/or drawing pads, crayons, etc. The organization arranges for 3 types of baskets: one for children 0 to 4 years old; one for children ages 5 to 9; and one for teens. The criteria is for cancer or blood related illnesses affecting children who are hospitalized.
Recently acquired Bronco quarterback Mark Sanchez volunteered during his Philadelphia days and when transferred to Denver immediately inquired for Basket of Hope here. This past April brought several players to Mile Hi (sorry it will always be Mile Hi to me)Stadium for packing the baskets' event. The purpose is to pack 100 baskets which takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hours, and the 100 is significant for the number of children on that particular floor of Children's hospital, as each child get's one. By the way this not only can be for the patient but family members, and, by the comments and enthusiasm from SHR members fits in well with our commitment to Ronald MacDonald House and our arts and crafts nights at Children's Hospital.
