CLUB NEWS

SANTA CLAUS (a.k.a. PP DARRYL HARVEY) AND MRS. CLAUS (a.k.a. DONITA) DELIVERED gifts for the children to Century Elementary School last week! The presents filled both of the Harvey cars and Darryl thanked everyone (all the elves) for shopping to make this happen! Of course, none of this would have happened if not for the leadership of Santa, our Community Services Chair, PP Darryl Harvey! Thank you Darryl, Donita and everyone whose efforts will make Christmas brighter for 42 children!

You still have SIX (6) days to purchase $25 gift cards for Gateway Domestic Violence Services from King Soopers, Safeway, Target, Walmart, etc. and get them to Darryl or PP Bill Maclay on or before our final meeting of the year, next Monday, December 17th.

NEW MEMBER PUBLICATION … This is the first of two publications for the proposed membership of John Palmer. John is a District Executive for the Boy Scouts of America - Denver Area Council. John's classification is Youth Services, Scouting.

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE … On December 4 PP Betsy Jansen was joined by Tamila Bauer (Nov 6 program speaker), President Talee Crowe, Colleen Farrell (subbing for PP Jeff Kaes), PP Darryl, Donita & Jason Harvey, PP Nancy Jones, PP Mark Johnson, PP Rich Johnson, April Rasmussen, PP Terry & Linda Remigio, and PP Jim & Judy Suss to cook and serve dinner for the residents at the Ronald McDonald House! As Betsy said, everyone tripped over each other a little bit but it was a good group with only a couple of hiccups with the meal and many of the residents came back for second helpings. PP Jim Suss said the gratitude expressed by the families was unbelievable! The next Ronald McDonald House opportunity is Tuesday, January 15th.

EVERYONE IS A PARTICIPANT IN THE BEIUS ROMANIA UROLOGY EQUIPMENT PROJECT … According to PP Bev Edwards, Smoky Hill Rotary, the international sponsor for this project, has, within the club's financial contribution to the project, allocated $100 in the name of every member of the club as a Paul Harris Foundation contribution. That made every member of the club a participant in the Beius project! Thank you Bev! As Bev concluded, now EVERYONE should make the trip to Romania to reflect the fact that EVERYONE is a participant in the project!

SMOKY HILL ROTARVARIETY OF NEWS … January 25, 2019 is the RI President's Dinner and Prez Talee Crowe would like to see Smoky Hill occupy a full table. RI President Barry Rassin will speak. The cost is $65 per person and you can go to the District's website for more information and to make reservations. The Smoky Hill Satellite Club met on Monday evening this week at the View House with PP Joe Hughes and a few others for some holiday libations and hors d'oeuvres. The Satellite Club is meeting once a month and will eventually be looking to expand beyond the 4 members it currently has.

Program Co-Chair PP Dave Maxwell is hosting a White Elephant Gift Exchange as the program for our meeting next week, December 17th. Remember to bring one wrapped gift next week, either a new gift (no more than $25), a re-gift (something you already have but no longer want) or a Rotary item, but no Rotary golf shirts! If a gift you bring gets "re-gifted" 3 times during the exchange because you brought a "nice" gift, you will win a prize! And count your holiday blessings, sounds like Dave wanted to do Karaoke instead of the White Elephant but was overruled by Prez Talee!

Poor little Donita began straining to stir her big spoon by the time the rice coagulated in the Team THICKSET RICE pot. Within two minutes, beads of sweat began to form on her forehead! The Smoky Hill Rotary TEAM Solution: With help from Team DUN IT RITE, Teams SOUPZ ON and THICKSET RICE carefully poured and mixed their concoctions together into one, even larger cooking pot. Todd Price with JP Morgan Chase presented a talk on "Investment Behavior in a Volatile Market". Todd has been with Chase for 18 years and grew up in South Denver. A late cyle in the stock market creates volitility. Peter Lynch of the infamous Fidelity Magellan Fund averaged an annual return of 27%! That means your money would have doubled every two and a half to three years. But if you bought and sold the fund at different times during Lynch's time over Magellan you would have only made a 3% return.

Corporate earnings growth has been 25% over the past year. The Trump administration has been unpredictable. Their strategy has been to shoot big then rachet it back counting on every "No" being followed by a "Yes". The China tariffs are not a big deal as China accounts for only less than 1% of our global trade. The United States is in a better position to win trade wars than anyone else. We should not be overly concerned about tariffs and exports. We should be concerned about Federal finances and the increasing Federal budget deficit. This is the last time we will see the deficit below $1 Trillion. The deficit is a long term driver that could negatively affect the stock market.

Todd believes a lot of opportunity still exists in the stock market, but it is difficult to keep a 20-30 year perspective in a volitile market. The way to win is to stay invested for the long term. We can expect the Fed to raise interest rates in December and again two times next year. Trump's tax reform was needed from a corporate perspective but it was not necessarily needed for individual income taxes, it was relatively unnecessary and will wear off by 2020.

We have recently seen 500+ point moves in the stock market. The last 500 point move was in October 1987 and represented a 22% change in value. Today, a 500 point move is only a 2% change in value and a 250 point move is only a 1% change in value. In any normal year you can expect to see a 14% drop in market value and in February of this year we saw only a 10% drop in value.
