CLUB BOARD MEETING … is this Thursday beginning at 5:30PM at Susan Aubin's office. All members of the club are invited to attend board meetings and board members, don't forget to make those fellowship calls.

BLUE BADGE INDUCTION … Membership Chair PP Jeff Kaes was pleased to join April Rasmussen and PP Nancy Jones at the podium to present April with her well deserved blue membership badge! Nancy served as April's mentor. CONGRATULATIONS APRIL and WELCOME TO SMOKY HILL ROTARY CLUB!

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY … the next day of service is Saturday, October 13 from 7:45AM to 3PM. It is located at Sheridan Square in Sheridan, CO. From Hampden (Hwy 285) turn south on Lowell and then east on King. Sheridan Square consists of 63 new townhomes and a park. You don't have to have any construction expertise. PP Al Horton can use two or three more volunteers so call or email Al if you have any questions or want to sign up!

CLUB OFFSITE VISIT … Vocational Chair Mark Rank has scheduled an offsite visit to the Aurora Firefighter's training facility on October 15. Please mark your calendars and note that we will not be meeting at the Bent Noodle on that date.

GATEWAY TO UNDERSTANDING … is a speaker series sponsored by the Aurora Gateway Rotary Club and on October 9, 2018 from 7 to 8:30PM, Eric Cahn, a holocaust survivor is speaking at Queen of Peace Church (13120 E Kentucky Ave). Carol Hartman from the Gateway club visited our club and handed out flyers. No reservations or tickets are needed and there is no cost to attend. For more information call Carol at 720-773-0747.

THE TIN CUP … goes to PP David "Duval" Maxwell!! PP Gary "Player" Frisch seemed to be happy to announce it was not won by PP Joe "don't need a nickname" Hughes for the first time in many years, only because after a couple of beers, Joe declared the winning score would be the net (net of handicap) score. Despite having an established handicap, Dave netted a score of 75 (gross somewhere around 105?), Joe took second place and Gary took third. According to Gary, the SHRGA (Smoky Hill Rotary Golf Association) sponsored the event at Murphy Creek golf course. It was the first, last and only round of golf in the tournament. According to Gary, the SHRGA had the course in excellent shape and the greens were firm but not too fast. Dave will have to pay to have the Tin Cup engraved with his name because the SHRGA barely had enough money to cover the greens fees and beer!

WEST AFRICA PROJECT FAIR … October 2-11, 2018 in Cotonou, Benin (West Africa). It is a showcase of Rotary projects from 15 West African nations. The cost of $1,729 per person includes the hotel, sightseeing, transfers, meals, polio immunization activities, Rotary events, community service and humanitarian projects. You will have a chance to give two drops of the polio vaccine to a child. If you are interested in attending, contact Talee or go to the RI website.

WASH SYMPOSIUM … The WAter, Sanitation & Hygiene symposium is October 6, 2018 from 8am-4:30pm at the Denver Wastewater Management Building (2000 West 3rd Ave, Denver 80223). OTHER NEWS … President Talee Crowe advises the Denver Southeast Rotary Club is again sponsoring the State of the State address being held on December 13, 2018 at the Denver Marriott Tech Center. Molly Bloom of the 'Molly's Game' movie is the guest speaker. And, don't forget to put December 1, 2018 on your calendar for the Club's holiday party! PP Gary Frisch announced the club will receive $18,707 plus $1,596 from the raffle for a total of $20,303 from the SHR Golf Tournament, a record high! Next year's tournament is Friday, August 2, 2019 - mark your calendars! Hugh Radke reported "okay" attendance club training seminar at Front Range Community College two weeks ago. Hugh was a facilitator for the Rotary Foundation which covered Foundation giving, grant writing, qualifying for global grants, etc. PP Craig Essex received a nice thank you letter from a RYLA conferee from Wyoming who filled an extra slot we had for the RYLA conference.

INTERESTING UNKNOWN FACTS … in his invocation Pat Pogue asked some questions and if you had the correct answer to more than two questions, you are more intelligent than most Rotarians (well, at least one). Some of the answers: hot water will turn to ice faster than cold, Pat Pogue and the elephant are the only animals that can't jump, no animals have been domesticated in the last 4,000 years, stewardesses is the longest word you can type with your left hand, the tongue is the strongest muscle in the body, the original Coca Cola was green, "I am" is the shortest sentence in the English language, the names of all continents start and end with the same letters, women blink twice as many times as men, honey is the only food that won't spoil, the "Guinness Book of Records" holds the record for being the book most stolen from public libraries! Our Sgt-at-Arms PP Jim Suss pointed out he only types with his left index finger so he can type "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious", which is much longer than "stewardesses"!.

Matt Crane, the Arapahoe County Clerk & Recorder discussed the 2018 general election. The Clerk's office has 120 employees in four locations.

In Arapahoe County 38% of voters are unaffiliated (22% increase over last 4 years), 33% are Democrat (12% increase over last 4 years) and 27% are Republican (3% decrease over last 4 years) . Arapahoe County is a purple county in a purple state. This election's ballot will be 4 pages long and estimated to take about 10 minutes to complete if you are prepared and have read the Blue Book being mailed out this week. Ballot fatigue is real. Ballots will be mailed out on October 15. Russia did not get into Colorado's election system but did get into those of Illinois and Arizona. Russia does not attempt to actually alter records but tries to impair voter confidence in the US voting system.

In 2010 74% of registered voters turned out, in 2012 93% turned out, in 2014 68% turned out and in 2016 84% turned out. The 2018 ballot will contain 4 for US Congress, State governor, Lt. governor, attorney general, secretary of state, state treasurer, etc., judge retention, 7 Arapahoe County positions and multiple ballot questions.

November 6 is election day from 7AM to 7PM. On November 28 election results will be certified. There will be ballot boxes in 40 locations and ballots must be received by 7PM on November 6 (no postage is needed). If you mail your ballot (71 cents postage), it must be mailed by October 30. The cost per mail ballot (by mail or ballot box) is $3.96 and 99.43% of voter turnout use this method. The cost per in-person ballot is $83.76 and only .57% of turnout use this method.

There are 28 voter service and polling centers where you can register, update registration, request a ballot, vote a paper ballot or vote on an accessible electronic tablet. Bring your ID! Colorado is one of the safest states to cast a vote since the voting system is not connected to the internet, all ballots cast are paper ballots (audit trail) and the database is among the most secure in the nation.
