SMOKY HILL ROTARY'S

9th ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT … Friday, August 2nd!

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD DAY was last Saturday, May 4th. PP Al Horton, Ted Michalakes (hubby of Susan Michalakes), Clay Rasmussen (son of April Rasmussen) and PP Mark Johnson participated. The team was supposed to repair an older home but the repairs were almost complete so the team was relocated upon arrival to a nearby project building new townhomes (near the Purina Factory on I-70). Team Rotary installed all 17 main floor trusses and most of the subflooring for one of the townhomes. Clay, Al and Ted are seen here in the crawl space of the townhome installing some of the heavy, 19 foot long trusses. The trusses were installed by lunch and the plywood subflooring was installed on the trusses in the afternoon. The Habitat supervisor was very pleased with the progress made by the Smoky Hill Rotary team! As PP Al Horton said … 'WE NAILED IT!"

GETTING TO KNOW YOU, GETTING TO KNOW ALL ABOUT YOU - A VOCATIONAL AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF NEW MEMBER JACQUIE GALLO! … While my Air Force father was on reparations duty in 1946 from World War II, we lived in a confiscated Nazi scientist’s house and I was home schooled. We then moved to Newfoundland and were briefly trapped in an ice floe (I have the page from the ship's log). We also lived in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Florida and Hawaii.
I met my Air Force husband, Jon Gallo, in a Florida high school. I attended the Universities of Oklahoma, Colorado and Hawaii studying Fine Arts/Commercial Art.
In 1959 I married Jon who graduated in 1st class from the USAFA. Jon was a fighter pilot and together we have 3 children, 10 grandchildren and 8 great grand children. Jon and I were married for 59 years until his passing in 2018. We moved 26 times in 26 years for the Air Force including Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Philippines, Oregon, Michigan, California, Germany and Italy. I have volunteered as a manager of a Thrift Shop in Georgia, Chairman of 250 Red Cross volunteers for an 80 bed hospital in Homestead, Florida, Chief Coordinator for American, German and Italian relief agencies for the 1980 Naples, Italy earthquake and in a paid position as Emergency case duty worker for the American Red Cross in Naples.
My art endeavours include being a magazine cover artist, exhibitor of art in the U.S. and Europe, book illustrator and free lance commercial artist. I illustrated Airshow Colorado posters and marketing materials and performed hospital art therapy in the Philippines. I have a permanent painting at AOG (Aircraft On Ground) at the Air Force Academy. Jon and I designed a 9 foot memorial for the AFA which was installed at the National Air Force Museum in Dayton last September.
From 1986 to 1997 I worked for the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department, attended the ACC Law Enforcement Academy, the Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy and have the State of Colorado Board of Peace Officer’s Standards and Training Certification. I served as a Deputy Sheriff in the Special Intervention Unit (behavioral management). I am trained to negotiate/defuse trauma and control of violent behavior and provide protective custody.
I have volunteered as Chairman of Aurora Art in Public Places, wrote ordinances and was a Precinct leader for 10 years. I have served as Commissioner for the Arapahoe County Cultural Arts (SCFD) and 10 years on the Arapahoe County Community Corrections Commission. [WOW! Jacquie congrats on your productive life - you must be exhausted!]

THE CUATRO DE MAYO MEXICAN FIESTA on May 4th was EXCELLENTE! Excellente margaritas, excellente hosts in the beautiful home of Jim & Judy Suss, excellente friends and conversations, excellente food and excellente directions to the BANO!!

SMOKY HILL ROTARVARIETY OF NEWS …

PP Betsy Jansen provided sign up sheets for serving dinner at the Ronald McDonald house next week on Tuesday, May 14th. This is your last opportunity during this Rotary year to experience the fun, camaraderie and satisfaction that comes from serving a meal to the families! Betsy said "we will be cooking up a storm!"

President Talee attended the funeral service for PDG Dave Beall last Saturday and said it was a very nice service with several Past District Governors in attendance. President Talee thanked those who brought in nonperishable food items for Gateway Rotary Club's food pantry and passed around a flyer for the Rotary Club of Castle Pine's fund raiser at Top Golf on Sunday, May 19th.

The club's annual Installation Dinner will be held on Saturday, June 22nd at Heritage Eagle Bend! As such, there will not be a lunch meeting on Monday, June 24th.

John Palmer announced the metro area Boy Scout district acquired the Western Colorado Boy Scout contract and that he has been selected to be the new District Executive for the Western slope! Congratulations John! But this (sadly) means John will shortly be moving to Grand Junction and will no longer be a member of our club. John, we wish you all the best and will miss you! Come visit us!

PP Mark Johnson said we have collected over $4,000 for the golf tournament, a good start, but we have a long way to go. Extra golf flyers are available at our meetings. If you haven't started, it is time to start working on your contacts for the tournament.

THE SUSS BEDROOM TV … is AWESOME! It rises like a Greek Goddess from the foot of the bed! The Goddess dwarfs PP Paul Urtz in this picture! All the other stuff at the Mexican Fiesta … the fireplace, food, margaritas and friends were nice but … THE TV … just can't get you out of my head! Psychotherapy might help - here's 10 reasons why a temple rising from the foot of a bed isn't necessary: 1) More time to read The Rotarian magazine; 2) More conversation in bed; 3) Less electrical use; 4) TV's create static electricity and attract dust; 5) Opportunity to reflect on the day - what you think about last matters; 6) More/better sleep; 7) Lots of reasons to watch less TV; 8) Susceptible to TV advertisements when tired; 9) Rooms serve a purpose - kitchens are for cooking, bedrooms are for sleeping and 10) More/better sex. Yeah, know you saw #10 coming but unless that's happening … what time does the Late Show with Stephen Colbert come on?

Grant Couch is a member of the 300 member Boulder Rotary Club, managed traders all over the world while working at Wall Street until 2008 and retired from banking in 2015. Grant presented a program on 'The Good News on Climate'. Climate called him following retirement and he spent eight months researching it. Grant concluded that climate is a huge risk and he wanted to manage climate the way he pushed and managed financial risk on Wall Street. Climate is like science and whether you believe in creation or evolution, either side can be wrong. If you are wrong about climate, what are the consequences? Grant is a member of the Citizens' Climate Lobby and grew up in West Virginia with coal mines. He studied chemical engineering but wound up on Wall Street.
A good climate policy creates significant reductions in GhG emissions, increases U.S. employment and the economy without growing the government, is business friendly, maintains America's global leadership role without requiring an international agreement, offsets the regressive nature of higher energy costs and is bi-partisan.
The Citizen's Climate Lobby (CCL) is non-partisan with 120,000 volunteer members. 100,000 of the members are trained to lobby and perform outreach. The CCL is represented in all 435 congressional districts with a single focused advocacy to create revenue neutral pricing on CO2. To create the revenue neutral pricing you need to 1) place a carbon fee on fossil fuels at the source (mine, well or port); 2) return all of the revenue as dividends to households equally and 3) make border adjustments on goods imported from or exported to countries without an equivalent price on carbon (the "Three Policy Pillars").
The Good News? CCL's policy is now a bipartisan bill in congress - the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act containing the Three Policy Pillars. The Act stipulates the EPA cannot impose other regulations on carbon emissions for 10 years and exempts military and agricultural use of fossil fuels from the fee. The policy reduces America's emissions by 40% in the first 12 years and will create 2.1 million new jobs over 10 years.
The Other Good News? The political debate is now about solutions. Republicans were behind closed doors and now publicly engage with climate change, are returning to their environmental history (Nixon - EPA, Reagan - Montreal Protocol, etc) and current Republican leadership is stepping out. CCL and politicians need to be bridge builders. A strong American Economy and Environmental Quality are not mutually exclusive. Debate the solutions, not the risk. Be an engaged citizen, be a bridge builder.
