As PP Darryl Harvey said … what a GREAT DAY it was for one of our GREAT events ... shopping for school clothes for students from Century Elementary School! Everything was special - the kids, the parents, the staff from Century Elementary, the shopping, the Walmart staff, the $20 donation from an onlooking shopper, the opportunity for "extra Rotarians" to shop for school supplies and the bacon covered donuts (okay, maybe not those!). Thanks to the staff from the school especially to Holly Walker-Trine, a speech therapist from Century Elementary who teamed up President Talee Crowe to shop and who was a guest this week at our meeting. Special thanks also to Walmart employees Syeda and Monique who were very gracious, friendly and courteous! Last but not least Darryl thanked all the Rotarians. As Darryl put it, this event makes us proud to be Smoky Hill Rotarians! Darryl's commitment to organizing this event year after year is truly outstanding Service Above Self! Thank you Darryl and thank you Donita who looked like she has had previous experience as a Walmart bagger! It is said … "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give." On Saturday we gave $4,255 to help the kids with school clothes and supplies but we gave them something even better … SMILES!
GOLF TOURNAMENT … PP's Joe Hughes and Mark Johnson received a nice email from Dave Troyer, General Manager of CommonGround Golf Course … "I just wanted to thank you once again for continuing to host the Smoky Hill Rotary tournament at CommonGround. You guys do a fantastic job with the event and we love working with you! Hopefully everyone had a great time last week and you were able to raise a lot of money. If there were any issues, please let me know. Have a great afternoon ..." Tournament Chair PP Gary Frisch is asking everyone for any comments, thoughts, suggestions, etc. in advance of the golf committee's wrap up meeting this Wednesday at 5:30PM (bookkeeper's home). The golf committee is very, very grateful to Day Of Event Chair PP Bev Edwards and the DOE Smoky Hill Rotarians who, instead of having fun playing golf, gave up most of their day stationed at golf contest holes, handling registration, setting up raffle items, selling raffle tickets, mulligans and throws, making sure banners were in place, greeting guests, taking pictures, placing gift bags in golf carts, etc. The golf tournament would not be the success it is without our mighty group of DOE volunteers!
SIGN-UP FOR A COMMITTEE … President Talee Crowe came across the committee sign up sheets that were MIA during the transition to the Bent Noodle and passed them around. Everyone is asked to be on at least one committee.
RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE ... PP Betsy Jansen has graciously stepped up to be the coordinator of the Ronald McDonald house and announced the next date at the house is Thursday, September 13. Betsy will need 7-8 people to help cook/prepare and serve the dinner. Sign up sheet will be forthcoming.
SGT-AT-ARMS … From our Sarge PP Jim Suss: Shared transportation (Uber, Lyft) is a big topic in the automobile/travel industry. Jim shared this story from February 15, 2018 … An Uber passenger tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask him a question. The driver screamed, lost control of the car, nearly hit a bus, went up on the footpath and stopped inches from a shop window. For a second everything went quiet in the cab, then the driver said, "Look man, don't ever do that again. You scared the daylights out of me!" The passenger apologized and said, "I didn't realize that little tap would scare you so much." The driver replied, "Sorry, it's not really your fault. Today is my first day as an Uber driver - I've been driving a hearse for the last 25 years."

SPECIAL THINGS FOR SPECIAL ROTARIANS? … Speaking of smiles, PP Clay Fell put a big smile on the face of Walmart employee Monique even as Clay was frowning. Monique thought it was a joke when she refused to ring up that Marvel Spider Man 6-volt electric battery-powered ride on toy that Clay brought to the counter. When she realized that Spider Man was Clay's hero and couldn't wait to ride it down the block, she tried to comfort him by explaining how he could get hurt his elbow if he fell off a toy made for a six year old. Fortunately, later on one of those bacon covered donuts replaced Clay's frown with a smile.

Our good friend, Jeneen Klippel, Director of Development & Public Relations for Gateway Domestic Violence Services wears many hats for Gateway including management of volunteers and new staff, preparation of annual reports and planning for fundraising events. Jeneen works to get the community involved and to let them know Gateway is here. The services are still the same but Gateway changed its name from Gateway Battered Women's Services to its current name in 2016 to recognize they also reach out to men, children and pets experiencing domestic abuse. No one ... women, men, children or pets should live in fear of violence in the home.
Gateway has a 24 hour crisis line open 365 days a year and it takes in 16,000 crisis calls per year. It has an emergency shelter which can accommodate 26 people for up to 30 days but the time limit is flexible. It also has an extended stay shelter established in 2001 which can accommodate up to 14 or 16 people for a period extending 90 to 120 days beyond the initial month. Affordable housing is very difficult to find and regardless of your physical condition it is difficult for anyone to figure things out in just 30 days. The wait list for the extended stay shelter is 60 families long. Both shelters have been very successful and offer wonderful support for victims of domestic violence. Gateway also has the Bailey Project, an emergency shelter for pets. Many times Gateway will try to meet someone where they are located.
Gateway's outpatient counseling program is for women, men and children not in need of emergency services. Their court advocacy program is for victims under subpoena to be in court and assists/supports them through the court process.
Most victims of violence leave the situation at least 5 to 7 times before they leave permanently. Only 7% of offenders ever actually change their behavior. Offenders have to admit they have a problem, have to want to change and then be accountable for that change. Domestic violence is a choice that you don't have to make. The overall mission of Gateway is to prevent and eliminate intimate partner violence through counseling, residential care and empowering people for social change.
