SMOKY HILL ROTARY CLUB … "THE BEST PLACE TO BE AT NOON ON MONDAY" are the words of President Talee Crowe as she opens every meeting! Hard to argue with that unless instead you happen to be lying on a sandy beach in Kauai, receiving a Swedish massage and sipping on a Mai Tai! At last week's board meeting membership was a topic of discussion. Talee reminds everyone of her letter asking each one of us to bring at least one guest to a meeting this year. So far Talee, PP Lloyd Gottman and Mark Rank have brought a guest. Last Monday night,

several Rotarians met at the Viewhouse for a casual gathering. Kyle Hammer and Shane Sumner were joined by Prez Talee Crowe, PP Gary & Pat Frisch, PP Joe & honorary member Cindy Hughes, PP Paul & Debbie Urtz, PP Jeff Kaes, PP Terry Remigio, and PP Nancy Jones and Dave.

NEXT BOARD MEETING … in October it is on the 3rd Thursday (instead of the 4th Thursday) … that makes it OCTOBER 18TH!

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY … the next day of service is Saturday, October 13 from 7:45AM to 3PM. It is located at Sheridan Square in Sheridan, CO. From Hampden (Hwy 285) turn south on Lowell and then east on King. Sheridan Square consists of 63 new townhomes and a park. You don't have to have any construction expertise. PP Al Horton can use one or two more volunteers so call or email Al if you have any questions or want to sign up! Go help someone achieve home ownership!

CLUB OFFSITE VISIT … Vocational Chair Mark Rank has scheduled an offsite visit to the Aurora Firefighter's training facility on October 15. Please mark your calendars and note that we will not be meeting at the Bent Noodle on that date.

GATEWAY TO UNDERSTANDING … is a speaker series sponsored by the Aurora Gateway Rotary Club and on October 9, 2018 from 7 to 8:30PM, Eric Cahn, a holocaust survivor is speaking at Queen of Peace Church (13120 E Kentucky Ave). Carol Hartman from the Gateway club visited our club and handed out flyers. No reservations or tickets are needed and there is no cost to attend. For more information call Carol at 720-773-0747.

WASH SYMPOSIUM … The WAter, Sanitation & Hygiene symposium is October 6, 2018 from 8am-4:30pm at the Denver Wastewater Management Building (2000 West 3rd Ave, Denver 80223). COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMITTEE MEETING … is next Monday, October 8 beginning at 11:30AM at the Bent Noodle. Committee Chair PP Darryl Harvey invited committee members and anyone interested in the activities of the committee to join them for the meeting next Monday.

o cares? It was more thrilling to see Jim wearing the retro fashion Miami casual bowling shirt reminiscent of the bowling shirts Charlie Sheen wore in the TV series 'Two and a Half Men'! Jim looked better than Charlie and must be stocking his wardrobe with dozens of bowling shirts for his home in Florida! In this live shot of Charlie he is gawking at Jim's debonair look wondering why the heck he can't look that good in Cabana wear! In addition to his perfect wardrobe, Jim keeps up his perfect Rotary attendance sometimes using online video make-ups. He recently viewed a video on the global food crisis. The Earth currently has a population of 7 billion people and it is projected to have 9 billion by the year 2050! Jim recommends the video and if you want a bowling shirt, hurry up, it is also projected that the PBA (Professional Bowling Association) tour will overtake the NFL by 2050 since no one has ever suffered a concussion from bowling and bowling shirts are a lot more comfortable than pads and helmets!

Luke Stammer has been with ARC Thrift stores for 11 years and holds degrees in finance and physics from CU. ARC has 1,700 paid employees, 27 retail stores from Fort Collins to Pueblo, 16 donation centers and a fleet of 65 trucks. It has the largest non-profit call center in Colorado and will recycle 200 million pounds of goods this year. The revenue generated from the 27 retail locations is the primary source of funding for 14 ARC Chapters across Colorado. The ARC Chapters have received $70m from the retail stores since 2005. The ARC Chapters use the funding to help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to find jobs, housing, medical services and services in schools.

ARC has over 300 ARC Ambassadors, or employees who have intellectual and developmental disabilities who have been provided with job training, job placement, coaching and mentoring. Since 2005, $19m has been dedicated to ARC Ambassadors.

Some interesting statistics about ARC: ARC has processed 40 million customer transactions since 2005; 4 million curbside pickups since 2005; $4m in vouchers (gift certificates) provided to Coloradoans in need since 2005; 3m pounds of food collected and provided to food insecure Coloradoans since 2005 (largest provider for 'Meals on Wheels'); 74,160 cars processed through Colorado Public Radio donations since 2005 and ARC has provided over 2.7m hours of volunteer service through its stores since 2011!

ARC has received over 40 best thrift store awards across the front range since 2005. People donate for convenience but shop for selection and ARC does not believe Goodwill has the same level of selection as ARC. ARC believes its competitors are discount retail outlet stores like Ross and Marshalls, not Goodwill.
