This month's District bulletin has some good advice regarding how to build our membership. It reminds us of some sage advice from a successful fisherman: "When baiting your hook, use the bait they like, not the bait you like." I think we have done that this year by changing our lunch payment policy and membership requirements, which helped us attract our five new members.
But I also think it's important to remember that advice when thinking of members who have left our club.
I reviewed our membership rosters going back to when I joined the club in 2010 and counted 20 people who have resigned since then. I was able to confirm addresses for 13 of them and sent them a letter this morning outlining our new policies and welcoming them back to the club. If you are still in touch with any of our former members, please give them a call in a few days to let them know how much we would like them to join us again. I can provide you with their phone numbers upon request.

SHRC was proud to award the 2018 Youth Services Award to Denver SouthEast Rotary, represented by President-Elect Karen Loeb and PP Dr. Jim Stambaugh, Project Leader for the "I Have a Dream Project!"
PP Al Horton awarded DSERC a check for $500 for the award, to further support the I Have a Dream project. Karen and Jim told us about the great accomplishments of the Signature Project and how it has morphed over the years from following a cohort of students to graduation to supporting the Strive Academy at Ruby Hill Elementary with a multitude of enrichment programs. DSERC and other member donors committed $100,000 a year for a five year project which funds mentoring, computers, meals, holiday food baskets, Junior Achievement, Child Advocacy, Peaceful Schools, a climbing wall, and other projects which has increased the opportunities and success rates for the the students at this now high achieving school.

PP Clay Fell provided a great invocation today. Sorry, Clay, I missed the attribution but the gist of his message was that attitude leads to results which lead to lifestyle. If you don't like your lifestyle, evaluate your results, if you don't like your results, check your attitude, and if you don't like your attitude, you'd better check your philosophy of life. Thanks, Clay!

And while handing out Thank Yous, a HUGE Thank You to PP (and Bemis Awardee) Mark Johnson for handling the Bulletin last week for your Editarian (he might have been fishing). It was awesome! And Mark is the Editarian next year so SHRC will be well served!
PEv/PE Talee passed around the sign up for our last (of this Rotary Year) Ronald McDonald House dinners on May 22nd. You are needed from 4:15 to 7:00 PM and it looks like Talee needs a couple of more folks to sign up! Send her a quick email!

Don't Forget the District Celebration which begins at 11 AM on Saturday, May 19th and ends at 11 AM on Sunday, May 20th. District Governor Rajabi reminds us that our participation is strongly encouraged at the Celebration. The District has made it a lot easier to attend this year since it's going to be in the DTC and our club has budgeted funds to help defray registration fees. There is a bogey in the golf tournament brochure ... it shows the individual fee at $140 and the fill in the blank for number of golfers fee at $135 each. The fee for all non-corporate sponsored, individual golfers should be $140 each. Thanks to Mark Rank for catching the discrepancy and to PP Joe Hughes who will get it fixed. Don't let the bogey stop you from finding golfers and sponsors! The 8th Annual Golf Tournament Fund Raiser is Friday, August 3rd! Let's all get out there and find golfers and sponsors!

As the photo shows, PPX2/Sgt. @ Arms Paul Urtz brought back the ever popular "What's in the Bag?" gag for today's lottery. President Nancy was the lucky recipient of the "Cinco de Mayo Starter Kit."
Erin LaCount, Environmental Educator at Dinosaur Ridge and self-described "Dinosaur Loving Kid who Never Outgrew it," presented a superb program on Salacious in the Cretaceous, or in other words, Dinosaur Sex! How, exactly did Dinosaurs have sex? They are so big and so bizarre, it can only be assumed that dinosaur sex is also going to be big and bizarre!
Erin explained that the closest living relatives on the evolutionary tree to dinosaurs are birds, especially waterfowl, and maybe crocodilians. So we learned about how most birds do it...turns out to be cloacal kissing. Sorry, I am not going into it in print. Google it.
But waterfowl and crocodilians do it differently, utilizing an uncoiling penis (I never thought I'd write those two words together) that apparently breaks off when the deed is done (everyone grimaced...it's OK, Erin says it grows back!) This is called "explosive eversion." Again, you can google it, preferably not at work.
Erin also provided us with the best graphics I've ever seen in a powerpoint, including a pole dancing dinosaur and artists' images of dinosaur sex and some actual photos of bird sex. Sadly, I was laughing too hard to get a picture of any of it. Again, you could google it, but in this case, I would just use your imagination, if you must. Or use someone else's computer when they aren't watching.
Thank you, Erin, for a great program. Erin mentioned they have a Beer Garden event on June 16th so I might have to combine my new-found love of dinosaurs with a bike ride and a beer...hmmm.
