MEETING NOTES:

President Dave Maxwell opened the meeting. PP Jeff Kaes (PP = past president) delivered the invocation. It was a “Pi” day math problem involving a belt around the world being extended by 12” which would allow a mouse to crawl under.

Business-

· President Dave did a promo for the District Conference. There is $750 in the budget to be divided among attendees from the club to defray the cost.

· PP Joe Hughes announced that the Golf Committee meeting will be held on March 22, 4:30 at his house.

· Nancy Jones announced that the next social event will be April 9, 4:30p.m. a tour of a local brewery.

· Past District Governor Talee Crowe announced that Community Service is conducting sock drive for the 180 Street Project at Comitis. Clean lightly used or new socks will be collected over the next 3 weeks.

· Denny Pasantino and Nancy Jones went to PETS last weekend and are totally Rotaried up. One of the speakers announced that polio may be eradicated as early as next year. Nancy had a great time, said, “800 people were there. Good people doing good things.”

Sgt at Arms & PP Jim Wingert thanked PPJeff Kaes for filling in for him last week. He was in Las Vegas at a continuing ed conference

RECENT SPEAKER

Speakers-From Goodwill Industries of Denver. Kelly Stangel-Martin, Director of Partner Engagement and Vanessa Cruz, Environmental Health & Safety Associate.

Goodwill was founded nearly 100 years ago in order to empower people to build a better life through better employment opportunities. A hand-up, not a hand-out.
90% of the value of all donations goes into programs.
There are 159 local chapters of Goodwill around the country. Local boards are largely autonomous.
Kelly has worked for Goodwils for 7 years and is completely dedicated to the non-profit sector in general and Goodwill in particular.
They have launched a new program “Employee Colorado” dedicated to helping anyone who wants a job to find one. The drive has many great corporate partners.

Vanessa-she came from a difficult background. She did not finish high school and had some marks on her record. Her family was on welfare. She wanted to improve herself and so she got a medical assistants’ degree, but could not find work. Goodwill looked past her record and gave her a chance, first as a part time associate and clerical help. She was so valuable and hard working that she was soon offered a full time position. Goodwill did for her what it has done for many.

Goodwill is dedicated to a code-get a job; get a better job; get a career.
Their programs begin in middle and high schools by encouraging kids to get a post secondary education and/or training for specific jobs.
Adult programs include a career connection center (it prepares people for interviews, helps them draft resumes). They can also enter a 2 year work program to show potential employers that they can be desirable employees.
There is a 5 year special needs program-people work in Goodwill industries to show employers what they can do, and then are placed in appropriate jobs.
75% of income comes from the retail stores, but increased competition has made it necessary to try to cultivate other sources, including corporate donations.
They have an electronic recycling program-anything with an electric cord except TV’s. Computers are refurbished, their hard drives wiped. It is free.
Donations that don’t make the store are recycled in other ways. Cloth is shredded and used by VW to make insulation for their cars. Stuffed animals are cleaned and sent, along with
