The Smoky Hill Rotary Club 2019-2020 Board of Directors needs to fill two positions - Treasurer and Editarian! On behalf of PE Hugh Radke, President Talee Crowe asked everyone and anyone to consider fulfilling these roles. As long as you know how to reconcile a checkbook you can be Treasurer and as long as you can take club meeting notes (NO weekly program notes henceforth!) you can be Editarian! Contact Hugh or Talee if you have any questions regarding these important club positions!

9th ANNUAL CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT … Friday, August 2nd!
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY BUILD DAY is Saturday, May 4th at a home exterior repair project located at 5015 Fillmore St, Denver, 80216 from 9am to 4:30pm. If you did not register at http://vhub.at/smhrotary and would like to volunteer, contact PP Al Horton by phone or email as soon as possible! Habitat has five (5) spots reserved for Smoky Hill and Al could use 2 more volunteers. No prior construction experience is required!

You should have received an Evite from Club Service Chair PP Terry Remigio for the Mexican Fiesta with chips, salsa, guacamole and carnitas to be held on Saturday, May 4th at the newly remodeled home of PP Jim & Judy Suss from 5:30pm to 9pm. Jim makes EXCELENTE margaritas - beer, wine and soda will also be available! If you did not receive the Evite get in contact with Terry. But, unfortunately, not everyone is a Rotarian and sometimes you might hear answers like these when you ask the simple question … What is Rotary?...

Hank Galbreath is a Major Gifts Officer with Homes For Our Troops ("HFOT"). Hank is retired from the military which required him to live all over the U.S. HFOT was founded in 2004 by a home builder from Massachusetts who wanted to build a home for a patient from Walter Reed Hospital. The patient would only accept the home if homes were built for other Veterans. HFOT now builds specially adapted custom homes nationwide for severely injured post 9/11 Veterans, to enable them to rebuild their lives. Unfortunately, HFOT does not have enough resources to build homes for Viet Nam Veterans. The typical recipient of a home is young, junior enlisted and has one or more limbs amputated.
So far, 274 homes have been built in 42 states and 18 homes have been built in Colorado. The Veterans like Colorado because of the skiing but most of the homes have been built in San Antonio and San Diego where large military communities exist since their prosthetics are the best in the world. HFOT just completed a home in Montrose, Colorado in September and is getting ready for the next home in Pine, Colorado. Most of the front range homes are located in Elizabeth and Parker.
Existing homes used to be modified for the Veterans but now HFOT solely builds new homes. The homes are donated to the Veterans but the Vets are required to be mentored by a Certified Financial Planner pro-bono for 3 years (household budgeting, homeownership education, warranty coverage, etc.) and HFOT places 10 year liens on the homes to prevent Veterans from flipping the homes or taking out loans against the equity in the homes. All of the homes are approximately 2,800 square feet in size and modifications for the Vets include pull down counters and showers without curbs. In Texas, some homes are being built with FEMA Level 5 safe rooms to provide protection from tornadoes.
HFOT depends upon donations from corporations, foundations and individuals. While 274 homes have been completed, 79 Veterans are currently waiting for their homes to be built and there is over 1,000 other Veterans who qualify for a HFOT home. HFOT stays in contact with the Vets after home delivery and continues to expand its network of nonprofits, corporations and government entities to provide Vets assistance with employment, education, training, health and other issues.
