THE ROTARY FOUNDATION … Foundation Chair PP Lloyd Gottman was honored to introduce the Foundation Chair of District 5450, Gail Lehrmann. According to Gail, the 62 Rotary Clubs in District 5450 raised $575,000 for the Foundation last year (Rotary year that ended on June 3

0, 2018) and $265,000 for the Polio Plus program! Gail presented immediate PP Nancy Jones and 2017-2018 Foundation Chair Hugh Radke with a banner in recognition of Smoky Hill Rotary as the third highest giving per capita ($460 per Rotarian) in the District last year! As President Talee Crowe noted, Smoky Hill may be small in number but we are BIG in heart! Congratulations to Nancy, Hugh and all the Rotarians who generously donated to the Foundation!

We were also honored to have Assistant Governor Kay Davis attend our meeting this week. Kay offered her congratulations to the club for its contributions to The Foundation. Hugh Radke and Kay attended the Rotary Leadership Institute on October 13 and they strongly encourage everyone to attend the next session on December 1. The institute will enlighten you with the broader scope of Rotary, provide the ability to network and the avenues to grow both professionally and in Rotary. The club will pay for your tuition fee.

SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN … to make Christmas special for students at Century Elementary School. Make sure you have Saturday, December 1 on your calendar. That is the date for the club's holiday party and we will be shopping and wrapping Christmas gifts for Century Elementary students and bringing them the party at Prez Talee's home, along with a pot luck appetizer or dessert. The names of the kids and their wish lists will be available next week.

OTHER DATES TO REMEMBER … The next club board meeting is Thursday, November 15; Serving at The Ronald McDonald House is Tuesday, December 4 (see PP Betsy Jansen) and Thursday, December 13 is the State of the State (Denver SE Rotary; speaker inspired the movie "Molly's Game")

SMOKY HILL ROTARVARIETY OF NEWS …

PP Craig Essex spent last week in Breckenridge and while waiting endlessly for the ski lift lines to open, he decided he had time to attend the Breckenridge Rotary Club luncheon on Tuesday. Not sure if the lunch was as good as the colorful shrimp salad we were served at the Bent Noodle this week, but Craig ran into a former member of Smoky Hill, Curtis Slack! Curtis is president elect of the Breckenridge club (25 members) and he owns Ridge Street Dental in a charming house located at 213 S Ridge Street in downtown Breckenridge. Curtis says "HELLO" to Smoky Hill and if you are in Breck, stop by and say Hi to Curtis!

PP Clay Fell filled in for Sgt. at Arms PP Jim Suss this week who was spotted in San Francisco eating sour dough

bread and Ghirardelli chocolates as he walked across the Golden Gate Bridge! Clay had to remind everyone how bad the weekend was for local football teams (none worse than CU losing in OT after leading 31-3 early in the 3rd qtr!) but according to Clay, it was a great weekend for PP Paul Urtz! Paul's third cousin Zach, who plays tight end for the Philadelphia Eagles, had a great game at Wembley Stadium in London as the Eagles beat the Jacksonville Jaguars by a score of 24-18! Unfortunately, Paul doesn't have the looks and certainly not the athleticism of Z

ach and years ago when Zach found out Paul was his cousin, he asked his parents to change his last name from Urtz to Ertz. That explains why Paul had a bewildered look on his face when Clay announced the connection to his long lost cousin!

Clay passed out 3 lotto tickets, 3 cash prizes and a "what's in the bag?" prize this week. Not knowing the history of the bag, one of our guests, Stepanie Graves from the Aurora Gateway club, naively chose the bag. Clay looked like a proud eagle hovering over its prey as Stephanie carefully opened the bag … and in the bag was a $5 gift certificate to the 'My Favorite Muffin' store (thanks to Mark Rank). A good ending to a very tense moment. The Eurtz cousins, the Phillie Eagles, a preying eagle, The Bag, muffins, 3 lotto tickets and trick or treating for Halloween! Way too much excitement for one week!

THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM

Jeff Deatherage, P.E. is the chief of water supply for the City of Denver and a graduate of CSU and CU Denver. Jeff works for the Colorado Division of Water Resources ("DWR") which is a division of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources. Other divisions within the Department of Natural Resources are Parks & Wildlife, the Division of Forestry, the Oil & Gas Conservation Commission and the Avalanche Information Center. The major responsibilities of the DWR are water administration, public safety (well & dam construction oversight), water well permitting, interstate compacts (water agreements between states), the hydrographic program (water flow measurement) and public information services. In Colorado there are over 173,000 water rights, over 105,000 structures (ditches, wells, springs, dams, reservoirs) and over 250,000 wells.

Initial water administration was originally over surface water only (mining and domestic uses). The administration of water now includes surface water and tributary ground water as increasing demand for the finite resource led to competition and conflict. Colorado uses an appropriative water system or "First in Time, First in Right" system. Our state constitution requires diversion/beneficial use of water to occur according to the priority of the appropriation. Junior water rights must let water pass by to senior rights if there is a supply shortage. The system is designed to provide security to water right holders, reliability by administration and enforcement of water rights and flexibility by allowing for changes (sale/transfer) to water rights.

In 2017 Colorado had a population of 5.6m people and it is projected to increase to 10.5m by 2050! While 80% of the population is located on the Eastern slope (front range), only 20% of the water is located on the front range! To meet the increasing demand and projected 20% water shortage, several measures are being taken including transmountain diversions of water to the East, aquifer storage and recovery, storage of excess water in wet years, extending the life of aquifers, capturing and reusing waste water for parks, golf courses and the Denver zoo, conservation, new projects (including water storage in lined gravel pits) and letting irrigated agricultural land to dry up.

Colorado is a headwaters state delivering water downstream to 19 other states though interstate compacts! Within Colorado, water deliveries are 86% agriculture, 7% domestic/municipal, 3% recreation/fisheries, 2% industrial/commercial and 1% recharge.
