Full Conference fee is $125 per person (9:00 am - 9:00 pm) and there are reduced rates for first time attendees/Rotaract and if you attend the Saturday lunch/program or dinner/program instead of the full day of interactive events. President Talee Crowe would like to see Smoky Hill Rotary highlight the club's fantastic $117,000 Beius Romania hospital project in the Hall of Service. The club has not had a display at a district conference in a number of years.
PROPOSED NEW MEMBERS … Tim Swenson and Jacquie Gallo were in attendance and acknowledged this week again by President Talee Crowe (the second notice of their membership is published below). We learned that Jacquie has ties to Rotary dating back to June 7, 1956 when she was presented with a $200 scholarship to the University of Oklahoma (college of her choice) from the Rotary Club of Niceville-Valparaiso, Florida!

SMOKY HILL ROTARVARIETY OF NEWS …
The Literacy Conference 2019 sponsored by Rotary District 5450 is scheduled for this Saturday, March 30 from 8am-3:30pm at the University of Denver. Registration has been slow - it would be beneficial if at least one member of our club attended. Go to the District's website for more information and to register.
A REMINDER: Contrary to the announcement last week, the real club board meeting is this Thursday, March 28 beginning at 5:30pm at Susan Aubin's office.

ANOTHER REMINDER: There is a golf committee meeting this week on Tuesday evening beginning at 5:30pm at the home of PP Mark Johnson.
Our condolences are extended to PP Jim and Judy Suss following the passing of Jim's sister, Patty Stephenson, on March 22, 2019. Patty was challenged with Diabetes since childhood. Our thoughts and prayers are also extended to Jim's brother and fellow Rotarian, Paul Suss, and his wife Debbie. There will be a Rosary on Wednesday, March 27 beginning at 7pm at Horan & McConaty (11150 E Dartmouth, Aurora) and a funeral mass on Thursday, March 28 beginning at 1:30pm at Risen Christ Church (3060 Monaco, Denver).
If you have any appreciation whatsoever of sports, you have to love March Madness! We are down to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA College Basketball Tournament. It 
gets you thinking about what the Sweet 16 of Smoky Hill Rotary would look like! In no particular order, maybe it would look something like this: 1. Puttin' on the Ritz; 2. Annual shopping for children's Christmas presents and holiday party; 3. Special Things for Special Kids - shopping for school clothes & supplies for the kids; 4. The SHR Annual Golf Tournament; 5. The Rotary Foundation: SHR Paul Harris Fellows; support for PolioPlus program; 6. The Peaceful Schools Program; 7. International projects including the current project in Beius Romania; 8. The Ronald McDonald House; 9. Habitat for Humanity; 10. Annual Installation & Charter Night Dinners; 11. College scholarships for high school seniors; 12. Children's Hospital; 13. Thanksgiving baskets; 14. Gateway Domestic Violence Services; 15. Colfax Community Network; 16. The home of two PDG's and host club for two District Conferences! How sweet are these?! And you can probably think of something sweeter! In contrast, how can March Madness (o.k.a. insanity) with a bunch of overgrown college boys trying to toss a bouncy orange ball into a stupid round hoop even compare to sanity of Smoky Hill Rotary Club which has been tossing joy into the hearts of families for over 37 years?!

Janice Debaca presented a program entitled "Adults with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities and Developmental Pathways." Janice spent 15 years at the University of Denver and 11 years with Tri-County Health before joining Developmental Pathways ("DP"). Janice is the Community Outreach Manager for DP. DP is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency serving individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. DP is one of 20 Community Centered Boards located in Colorado it connects people to federal, state, county and private funding in Arapahoe County, Douglas County and the City of Aurora. DP provides intake, eligibility enrollment and case management services. Case management is a collaborative process of assessment, planning, facilitation care coordination, evaluation and advocacy. DP currently serves 8,000 families and it has 700 employees.
DP provides five programs: 1) Early Intervention Program serving families with a child up to age 3 who has a delay in his/her development. If eligible, the child and family are connected with a Service Coordinator who will organize services including physical therapy, social/emotional intervention and occupational therapy; 2) Children's Extensive Support Medicaid Waiver helps children under 18 and their families to establish a foundation for community inclusion as they grow into adulthood. Services include help with daily living and assistive technology; 3) Supported Living Services Medicaid Waiver provides a variety of services and support for adults (ages 18+) living in their own home or with family in the community. Services include homemaking skills, employment support and transportation; 4) Developmental Disability Medicaid Waiver provides access to assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week for individuals 18+. Services include day programs, transportation and employment, and 5) Family Support Services Program is not a Medicaid waiver but a state-funded program supporting individuals ages 3 through adulthood with services for skill building, home modification, family therapy and medical or dental services not covered by the Medicaid State Plan.
Today's systems are complex but they are a tremendous improvement from the institutions of the early 1900's through 1960's when 100 people shared a single bedroom, facilities were filthy, it was common to be placed in a nude section for days and punishment used straight jackets, mechanical restraints and electro-shock. Navigating today's systems is very difficult but the Community Center Boards help tremendously.
The majority of adults with intellectual & developmental disabilities are either unemployed or under-employed, despite their ability, desire and willingness to work in the community. The Division of Vocational Rehabilitation partners with employers and the community to provide jobs, training and the (High) School to Work Alliance Program (SWAP) to assist in obtaining jobs.
