SMOKY HILL ROTARVARIETY OF NEWS … Friday, January 25, 2019 is the RI President's Dinner and Prez Talee Crowe would like to see Smoky Hill occupy a full table. The cost is $65 per person - go to the District's website for more information and to make reservations. PP Bill Maclay thanked everyone for purchasing over $1,000 in gift cards for Gateway! Foundation Chair PP Lloyd Gottman quoted a portion of PP Bill Maclay's invocation: "Giving the gift of Love will endure forever". That is what we do when we contribute to the Rotary Foundation and precisely what PP Joe Hughes has done as Lloyd recognized Joe with a pin for achieving the Paul Harris + 3 level! Congratulations and thank you Joe! Instead of January 19, the Charter Night Dinner Celebration will be held on Saturday, January 26. The location and time will be announced. No meeting on Monday, January 21 preceding Charter Night. Sgt at Arms PP Jim Suss passed out an extra lotto ticket for everyone wearing their Rotary pins but it looked like the 3 ticket holders were winning over the 4 ticket holders. And whether she was a 3 or 4 ticket holder, the big lotto winner was PP Betsy Jansen with that large bottle of Baileys Irish Crème! Sergeant Jim was either in a particularly good holiday mood or found that bottle when he cleaned out his desk at the car dealership!
NO MEETINGS ON
DECEMBER 24 & 31!
NEXT MEETING: MONDAY, JANUARY 7, 2019
THIS WEEK'S THOUGHTS …“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.” - Abraham Lincoln
"I stopped believing in Santa Claus when my mother took me to see him in a department store and he asked me for my autograph." - Shirley Temple Black
THIS WEEK'S PROGRAM
PP Dave Maxwell in his Master of White Elephant Gift Exchange (WEGE) Hat … No one gifted any white elephants this week but the term refers to an extravagant, but impractical, gift that cannot be easily disposed. The phrase is said to come from the historic practice of the King of Siam (now Thailand) giving rare albino elephants to courtiers who had displeased him, so that they might be ruined by the animals' upkeep costs. Master Dave received an elk from Estes Park. Upkeep costs? Nah, elks do not eat nearly as much as albino elephants, particularly when they are made out of wood. Dave, thanks for the WEGE!
PP's Nancy Jones and Joe Hughes shining brightly in their red holiday attire …
Maybe John Palmer would have looked more excited if he had opened Betsy's bottle of Baileys Irish Crème instead of those flower holders … Prez Talee acknowledged John's pending membership and everyone is excited to get to know John better and welcome him into the club in January! …
Potty Putter PP Paul Urtz was so excited about his new Potty Putter, he quickly disappeared into the Bent Noodle restroom after the meeting …
PP Al Horton received a pair of very large cooking gloves … he said the Bronco wide receivers were wearing these in their last game … one of the receivers would have autographed them for Al but they couldn't hold on to the pens any better than the footballs …
PP Bill Maclay is a good sport to smile while holding a completely useless gift … just a few minutes earlier he was holding the Wine Tool Kit but thanks to the grand theft robbery committed by PP Jeff Kaes, he ended up with the Bizzooka snow ball thrower …
Yep, that is the Rotary logo on a pair of official Rotary underwear being held by PE Hugh Radke … couldn't wait 'til he got home so Hugh headed to the head to try them on. Unfortunately, Hugh couldn't get in the restroom because Potty Putter Paul locked the door.
A coffee cup for PP Terry Remigio that illuminates an image and/or verbiage when filled with warm liquids … hmmm … probably creates a toxic chemical reaction to do that … no worries for Terry since PP Gary Frisch stole it from him …
PP Bev Edwards is holding her mystical gift … no one, including Bev, knows what the heck
the mysterious gift is but maybe hubby Myles will find a use for it …
Pauline Ayers-Menk is unwrapping her gift … a red sweater … what? A normal gift? Looks like the one PP Joe Hughes was wearing … maybe he got 2 for the price of 1 at Big Lots …
President Talee Crowe looks like she just saw a ghost or was fretting because she couldn't decide between selecting an unwrapped gift or stealing the Potty Putter disclosing her hidden passion for golf … it looked like she was opening something the size of a toilet seat but it turned out to be a tray full of food … happily she said something like "Now I finally have something to feed all my hungry grandchildren!"
