Evan Morrison, Today's Speaker

Evan Morrison is Executive Director of The Free Guide a homeless services provider in startup phase.

A years long veteran of homeless services in Santa Cruz, Evan has managed a shelter, done outreach on the streets, beaches and woods, and helped countless Santa Cruz County residents and military veterans get housed.  Evan is part of the Veterans Village Committee, which was formed and headed by the Veterans Memorial Building to make a Veterans Village happen in Santa Cruz county. The Free Guide is one of the many community partners involved in making this project happen. I am also a resident of San Lorenzo Valley and am deeply invested in the well being of our community here.

The former Jaye’s Timberlane Resort in Ben Lomond is set to become the future Veterans Village, a permanent affordable housing solution for veterans and their families. Owners of the Highway 9 property accepted a purchase proposal from the nonprofit Santa Cruz County Veterans Memorial Building.

The Veterans’ Village, formerly Jaye’s Timberlane Resort, features a series of 10 rustic cabins swathed by dense redwood forest, right along Highway 9. And officials say once the previous operators are able to find a new house to live in, there will also be a larger residence that can be used to house a veteran’s family. Later on, they hope to fill in the pool and install eight modular units, too.

The Ben Lomond property will eventually provide housing for up to 40 veterans in need of permanent affordable housing and onsite supportive services.
