Steven Lieb

October 2
Dr Steven Lieb was our speaker this morning.  He is a proponent of "lifestyle as medicine"; that diet is the key to healthy living and longevity.  He looks to the "blue zones" around the world where the majority of long-lived individuals are. To quote Steven " diet is the #1 risk factor for life" & "All processed meat is carcinogenic".

He recommends a talk later this month by Dr Dean Ornish at the Felton Library, who explains how to reverse Alzeimers, cancer, heart disease, stroke and more afflictions of humans.

Jill Deurig
October 10
Jill is the new District 5170 Governor.  Jill started her Rotary career at the Scotts Valley club, but has since moved to Fremont and joined the Rotary club there. She announced her plan to cost-reduce the annual district conference.  One change will be shortening the meeting to just one day and holding it in San Jose at SJSU.  She recruited a small panel of us members to participate in a short Jeopardy round of Rotary questions and topics.
Mike Holton received yet another Paul Harris award from Jill.  Also, President Michelle and Eugenio presented a trip report on their visit to the Voces y Manos project in Guatemala.  The project's purpose is to expand agricultural practices that are culturally and ecologically sustainable.

Orrin Mahoney
October 16

Past District Governor Orrin Mahoney paid a return visit to our club this evening pitching the Rotary Foundation (TRF).  The motto continues to be "Every Rotarian Every Year".  It is as easy as ever for member to contribute annually to the Foundation - directly through the club or online at my.Rotary.com. Orrin travels every year on behalf of TRF.
He notes that polio is on the increase in the world with particular hot spots in Pakistan, Afganistan and Gaza.  The recent total number of vaccinations in Gaza is now up to over half-million individuals.  Last year, Rotarians donated over $400 million to TRF.

Gail Pellerin

October 24
Gail Pellerin, our member in the California state Assembly gave an update on the District this evening.  She and member Charlie Johnson share Cal State San Luis Obispo as their alma mater - "Learn by Doing".  Gail recently secured a $327,000 grant for the Highlands Park Senior Center.  She listed the bills & resolution that she is co-author on (vetoed and non-vetoed!).
She is also busy with the PG&E working group which is focused on rates mostly, not so much safety.  There is an AT&T working group as well that she participates on.  She is proud of being voted #7 most effective legislator by the Legislature.
