Cohousing Innovation
Jul 25, 2019
I am a retired Community College history teacher. I love to travel and share things I love with my grandchildren and anyone else who will listen. I just stepped down from being the President of our local Osher Lifelong Learning group at UCSC, and sometimes teach women's history for them. I live in Walnut Commons which is one of 3 or 4 cohousing communities in Santa Cruz. Cohousing is a hybrid between a commune and a condominium. Ours is an intentional community we built in downtown Santa Cruz. We each own an individual condo and share a common house. |

Valley Women's Club Recycling Center Closures
Jul 31, 2019 7:00 AM
With profound regret, the Valley Women’s Club of San Lorenzo Valley (VWC), after thirty years providing this valuable service to our community, announces the closure of its SLV Redemption/Recycling Centers (SLVRR) in Felton, Ben Lomond, and Boulder Creek, effective July 1 this year. Both the Boulder Creek and Felton Centers will close entirely on June 30th. However, the Ben Lomond Transfer Station will continue to provide recycling drop-off services for their wide-variety of materials, but will not offer California Refund for beverage containers (CRV). As a result of these changes, there will be no CRV services in the San Lorenzo Valley after June 30th.

O'Neill Sea Odyssey
Aug 21, 2019
Rachel Kippen has come a long way from her days racing outrigger canoes off the shores of Oahu. But in some ways, her recent appointment to helm O’Neill Sea Odyssey is a reconnection to those early ocean roots. Kippen, 34, was tapped to serve as executive director of the nonprofit O’Neill Sea Odyssey after its first — and only — director, Dan Haifley, retires March 20. Founded by wetsuit pioneer Jack O’Neill in 1996, O’Neill Sea Odyssey takes thousands of students out to explore and learn about the ocean each year, aboard the 65-foot O’Neill Team catamaran. Last summer, the nonprofit marked a major milestone as it brought its 100,000th youth out to sea. Most students come from low-income families, and for more than half of those students, the O’Neill Sea Odyssey experience is their first encounter with the ocean, according to organizational stats. |
