May 03, 2017
I have lived my life as a completely ordinary kid. I use social media to procrastinate on doing my homework, I go to high school football games, and I eat way too much frozen yogurt. Unlike other 17-year-old kids though, I have had the privilege of being a beauty queen. More specifically, a rodeo queen. I use the word “privileged” reluctantly when I say this, of course. I grew up dreaming about being a rodeo queen. The extravagant dresses and outfits, the gorgeous hair and makeup, the opportunity to gallop by the crowd at full speed, waving as I run by. What I didn’t know was that this world I so desperately wanted to be a part of was doing the opposite of what I live my life trying to do. It wasn’t empowering young women with a passion for the sport, it was degrading those that didn’t fit the standard of beauty that was "required" for the job. |

Dr. Norm Crandell is a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic West. He entered the profession with extensive training and experience in massage therapy and myofascial release and trigger point work. He carries that experience with his chiropractic adjustments, offering soft tissue work when necessary and tailoring a physical rehabilitation program to fit the patient's needs. This approach to wellness means looking for underlying causes of any disturbance or disruption (which may or may not be causing symptoms at the time) and make whatever interventions and lifestyle adjustments that would optimize the conditions for normal function. Using this unique approach, Dr. Norm is able to help you to accelerate and/or maintain your journey to good health. |

Americorps in the SLV
May 31, 2017
Linda Skeff says: It is exciting to see the Restoration Project expand as new groups and individuals join in the effort to remove invasive nonnative plants and encourage native plants to return to the degraded areas. The VWC, supporters of Garrahan Park,4-H, SLV Muesum supporters and Boulder Creek’s Community Church have all provided volunteers for various projects, and we are reaching out to involve more and more people. There are two basic goals, 1. To bring the whole SLV community that is sandwiched between Big Basin and Henry Cowell together in a native revival to improve the health of the watershed and its wildlife, both flora and fauna. (In the Midwest, studies demonstrated a huge increase in native fauna when each property in the area had a minimum 4X4 foot patch of native prairie grasses and plants. It is a huge community endeavor across many states and it is working there, so it will work here.) 2. To bring the communities together that form the SLV to form a living corridor for our native flora and fauna. Linking Highlands Park to Garrahan Park with this bridge will greatly increase the survival of the local flora and fauna. We now you have 3 huge tracts of public land thoughtfully connected by a community to form a native corridor one back or front yard at a time. |

It all began in the 80s ... The Redwood Mountain Faire started in the early 1980s as a way to feature the talent of local artists, and musicians, in a community event that would benefit local charities as well. It was extraordinarily successful for 18 years, and became the model for other festivals, including the Strawberry Music Festival. After a hiatus of many years, the community wanted it back, so back it came in a remarkable rebirth, at a beautiful new venue, Roaring Camp (thanks to Georgie Clark), in June, 2010. |

Waldorf Education
Jul 26, 2017
I practice taught at the Santa Cruz Waldorf School and fell in love with the school and community. I taught three classes in Santa Cruz the full cycle of grades 1-8. I have also worked as the Assistant Director of the Bay Area Center for Waldorf Teacher Training, and am now teaching there part time. In the summer I teach at Rudolf Steiner College in their Public School Institute. Over the years I have also taken the Waldorf Remedial Education training and the Waldorf Mentoring training with Else Gottgens. I have been privileged to travel all over the U.S. mentoring and evaluating Waldorf teachers, both in independent Waldorf schools and in Waldorf Charter schools. Since my last class graduated 8th grade in June 2013, I have been consulting in Waldorf schools throughout California, mentoring, evaluating and giving talks about Waldorf education. Waldorf education is still my passion and I am thrilled to share that whenever I can. |
