The World Health Organization has confirmed two cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in Nigeria, the first cases in the country since July 2014. After passing a year without a case of the wild poliovirus, Nigeria was removed from the list of polio-endemic countries in September 2015. These cases – from two local government areas of Borno state – occurred in July 2016. The Government of Nigeria – in partnership with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative – will take immediate steps to respond quickly to the outbreak to prevent further spread of the disease. This response will include...

From the August 2016 issue of The Rotarian Four hundred years ago, the invention of the microscope gave us a glimpse into an aspect of the world too tiny to be seen by the human eye. The microscope works by capturing light shone on or through an object observed through lenses, which magnify the resulting image so we can see it. But a microscope has its limits. In 1873, German physicist Ernst Abbe discovered that the ability of a microscope to see past a certain size was limited not by the quality of its lens, but by the wavelength of light shining into it. And since the wavelength of visible...

From the August 2016 issue of The Rotarian Quilts may be utilitarian objects, but Rod Buffington’s “quilt paintings” – watercolors on paper that are then covered with small bits of fabric – are geometrics where mathematics and whimsy intersect. Buffington, a member of the Rotary Club of Springfield, Ill., didn’t come up with this unusual method overnight. His voilà moment came as he beheld the mesmerizing quilts made by his grandmother, who lived to 104 and continued her craft until she was 98. To create his works, Buffington lays cotton fabric over paintings he has created, then hand-...

From the August 2016 issue of The Rotarian Steven Goldsmith is a mediation and training leader with Mediators Beyond Borders International, an organization that develops local skills for peace building and conflict resolution around the world. Goldsmith was among 150 experts and leaders who gathered at a Rotary presidential conference in Ontario, Calif., to discuss issues related to resolving conflicts and reducing violence. More than 1,500 people attended the conference, the first of five hosted this year by 2015-16 Rotary President K.R. Ravindran and Foundation Trustee Chair Ray...

President Hannon Hosts First Assembly

Due to the kind consideration and graciousness of Past President Nancy Thomas Newark Rotary held it's 1st Assembly at Rotarian Thomas home. Nancy provided delectable halibut from Alaska. In addition, members were provided exquisite barbecue tri-tip, many side dishes, and to top it off ice cream, with all the toppings, provided by Rotarian Jan Crocker.

Rotarian Howard Buschke led the Rotarians and their guests in the Pledge of Allegiance. Rotarian John Becker provided the invocation.

In introducing guests Howard and Shirley Buschke were honored for 70 years of marriage. They are truly an inspiration to all married couples:

Rotarians and guests listening with great interest as President Hannon opens Assembly.

Past President David Benoun introducing his beautiful wife Cora.

President Elect-Elect-Elect-Elect-Elect-Elect Vivien Larsen personally thanking President Hannon for his leadership of Newark Rotary.

The Assembly proceeded with the various Board members providing reports.

Finally, Newark Rotarians donated another 49 non-perishable items increasing our total to 190 items, which have now been donated to Viola Blythe.

Goal: 5,000 nonperishable items donated
190 items donated after 6 weeks
Total to still be donated-4,810

At the request of several Rotarians i have calculated the following donation goals to meet our goal of reaching 5,000 non-perishable items by the end of my term:

52 weeks x 97 non-perishable food donated=5,044
After 6 weeks--190 donated food items

Therefore: Should have 582 donated
We Have donated 190 items--392 behind our goal.

Note---In dropping off our non-perishable items I was thanked by Viola Blythe staff are our generous contributions. I was also advised that hey could use food staples suc as, rice, beans, etc...

I am hopeful that we can see greater participation by all Rotarians. Please help eliminate hunger.

Note: Please consider bring three or more non-perishable items. if each Rotarian brings three items we should be able to donate 60 per week. (20 attendee's x 3)

Thanks for those Rotarians that continue to contribute.

(Note--At the suggestion of Rotarian Dennis Jones, President Hannon agreed that Rotarians may bring in multiple weeks of food, and be fine free, at the discretion of President Hannon, so as to avoid the necessity of bringing three items per week. Recognizing the convenience, and knowing that all Rotarians will read this bulletin, if a Rotarian brings in multiple weeks of non-perishable food items, they must bring in 5 items for each week.

No raffle this week. Therefore, odds next week will be 1 in 16.

Thank you helping me get through my 1st Assembly. What a fabulous success. Again, a big thanks to Rotarian Nancy Thomas for opening her home to us once again.

I am going to keep my goals published so that fellow Rotarians can familiarize themselves, and assist me, in achieving these goals.

I wanted to take this opportunity to provide a brief overview of my goals as we enter the 2016-17 year:

  1. I want to continue the tradition of giving to local nonprofits, through our various fund-raisers, and am hopeful that we will establish new opportunities to demonstrate our charitable mission;
  2. I want to increase our Club Membership, not because that is typically what is expected of President's, rather I wish to increase our membership for the simple reason "why wouldn't a civic, business, religious or community member not want to join an organization whose Mission in 2016-2017 is ROTARY SERVING HUMANITY;
  3. All Newark Rotarians will automatically be fine free if they bring in 3 non-perishable food items that will be donated to Viola Blythe. Certainly, more than 3 items will be greatly appreciated by those in our community that go hungry every day. My goal is to donate 5,000 items this year. Please see if we can't easily surpass that goal;
  4. I am hopeful that we can increase weekly attendance at our weekly meetings. Why wouldn't friends want to have lunch on a weekly basis. My goal is to average 22 members per meeting. We will ask all Rotarians to sign in this week so that we can accurately track attendance. Please be advised that the historical fees paid for missed meetings or leaving meetings early will be instituted on a "let your conscience be your guide standard". Please be reminded that we are a non-profit, and if we are to remain in the black and encourage attendance these fees will need to be paid. Please help me achieve this goal.
  5. I am sure that I will develop other yet to be determined goals. My main goal will be to create an atmosphere hat is fun for all members.
