Last Week in Rotary...

Guest Speaker
Our speaker was Marty Kludjian, the Rotaract District Governor for Greater Fremont. Marty spoke about his experience at the Rotary International Conference in Toronto, as well as highlighting the improvements and growth of the Greater Fremont Rotaract Club.

The Newark Rotary Club had three guests at the meeting: Rich Brown and his mother Emily Brown as guests of Belinda Maloney, and Mary Lynn Pelican, the "Ambassador of FUN" (as she names herself) from the Niles Rotary Club.
Smiling for the Camera
Near the beginning of our meeting, after the flag salute and before the meals were served, Newark Rotarians and guest posed for a group photo on the stairs outside where we usually meet. A BIG thank you to Sohan Sharma for bringing his camera & tripod and organizing our first of many the photo shoots.
Chili Pepper Challenge (CPC) Update
As club members may remember, at the August 7th meeting it was decided that Newark Rotary would submit two (2) beneficiaries for the CPC. Since that meeting it was learned that our club could only submit one beneficiary. Past President Nancie Allen led the club in a discussion after which it was decided that the beneficiary this year would be Second Chance – Shelters, but we will consider supporting Newark Educational Foundation at some point in the future.
BYOB last week
For those who missed the August 14th meeting, at the end of the BYOB raffle, with only two members left standing, it was a “Battle of the Breens” . . . . and the winner was . . . .(drum roll) . . .Pam Breen!
BIG Raffle Winner!!
At our End-of-Meeting” raffle, past-president Mike Hannon accurately selected, out of 5 balls, the only clear ball. Prior to winning, Mike had pledged to “donate the winnings to a Newark School.” It has not been determined which lucky school will receive his donation.

This year’s Bike Rodeo was a great success and for those who have not already participated, I encourage you to participate as future opportunities make themselves available. A BIG thank you to Jeff Aguilar and Jonathan Arguello, for their participation in organizing the event. An additional, BIG thank you to the behind the scenes supporters: Chief Mike Carroll and Newark’s dedicated police officers who spent time supporting and caring for the children receiving bikes. It was a wonderful opportunity for members of the Newark community (adults and children) to see Newark police officers in a positive role.  Many thanks also to all the Rotarians who attended this successful event.
