Rotary International News
When we introduced Rotary Club Central in 2012, it revolutionized goal tracking and planning for clubs and districts — no more filling out paper club-planning forms or passing along boxes of historical club information every time a new leader took office. Rotary Club Central offered clubs and districts a quantifiable way to begin measuring local and global impact, specifically membership initiatives, service activities, and Rotary Foundation giving. But as with any technological advancement, in a few short years, Rotary Club Central began to show its age, and Rotarians took notice. They...

At its January 2017 meeting, the Rotary International Board of Directors adopted a new zone structure for Rotary clubs. Rotary bylaws require the Board to complete a comprehensive review of the 34 Rotary zones no less often than every eight years to ensure that each zone has an approximately equal number of Rotarians. The Board’s previous review of the zones occurred in 2008. The Board earlier approved the creation of three regional workgroups to develop rezoning proposals for Asia, Europe/Africa, and the Americas. These workgroups comprised one representative (either a current director,...

Through The Rotary Foundation, Rotary members have supported thousands of projects that promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, save mothers and children, support education, and grow local economies. We’ve also led the fight to eradicate polio worldwide. As part of our celebration of the Foundation’s centennial, we’re honoring 20 global grant projects with special recognition. This Week at Newark Rotary
October 23 - 29, 2017

This week's Meeting:
Tuesday, October 24

Crab Feed Planning

Not to be crabby, but let's all get together and plan our next great crab feed!

The Newark Rotary Crab feed is our one major annual fundraising event. Our success in past years made it possible for us to exceed the initial funding requests of 27 local and international charitable and educational organizations.

In total, as a result of our successful crab feeds, we were able to give more than $33,000 to these organizations.

In this week's meeting, President Elect Jennifer Makin will guide us through our first all-hands meeting to begin pulling things together for our 36th annual crab feed. With your participation, we have every reason to believe this will be our most successful crab feed ever!

NOTES:

  1. If you haven't already, be sure to block out January 27, 2018. This is the date of our crab feed and all club members are expected to participate in setup and other support activities throughout the day, until clean-up is done.
  2. If you have your crab feed pin from last year, please be sure to wear it for this very important crab season kick-off.

Meeting time: 12 noon, Tuesday, October 24

Location: Bistro 880 in the Newark DoubleTree Hotel.

Last Week in Rotary
(Three for the Price of One)

Here's a brief recap of what happened at the last three Newark Rotary meetings.

October 3

District Governor Orrin Mahoney
Governor, District 5170

This was a special meeting for all of our members. It was an opportunity to hear from our District Governor and learn about how the District is working to help our club succeed.

We also inducted three new members to our club.

  • Chomnan Loth
  • Leticia Salinas
  • Jonathan Arguello

And if that weren't enough, President Hansen was proud to be able to honor his wife, Gail Hansen with her Paul Harris Fellow award.

Be sure to scroll to the end of this page to see more pictures from DG Mahoney's visit.

October 10

Club Assembly

This was the first official club assembly of the Rotary year.

There was little official business conducted. Instead, most of the meeting was given over to open dialogue about what members want from the club and how we can move the club further in the direction of truly being beneficial to all concerned.

October 17

Newark Parks Master Plan

With today's speaker, we got two for the price of one!

Past Newark Rotary President David Zender and Edda Rivera, City of Newark Marketing Coordinator teamed up to give us a look at what's in store for parks in the city of Newark.

As Community Services Director, David Zehnder has been hard at work for months developing a master plan for the city's parks system. He shared with us some of the highlights of the master plan.

City of Newark Marketing Coordinator Edda Rivera followed David with additional details about park development and improvements we'll be seeing over the coming months and  years.

A Word From the President:

Teamwork

Rotary International and the Newark Rotary club are as successful as they are because of the hard work and dedication of tens of thousands of people who have stepped up to give a little more of themselves for the benefit of others.

As we begin ramping up our efforts for our 36th annual crab feed, I am reminded of how important teamwork is in making this fundraiser a success for the community. I am looking forward to another successful crab feed in 2018. It warms my heart to read the thank you notes from organizations we have been able to fund. And I look forward to the camaraderie we all share leading up to and on the day of our event.

Laurence Hansen
