Rotary International News
When we introduced Rotary Club Central in 2012, it revolutionized goal tracking and planning for clubs and districts — no more filling out paper club-planning forms or passing along boxes of historical club information every time a new leader took office. Rotary Club Central offered clubs and districts a quantifiable way to begin measuring local and global impact, specifically membership initiatives, service activities, and Rotary Foundation giving. But as with any technological advancement, in a few short years, Rotary Club Central began to show its age, and Rotarians took notice. They...

At its January 2017 meeting, the Rotary International Board of Directors adopted a new zone structure for Rotary clubs. Rotary bylaws require the Board to complete a comprehensive review of the 34 Rotary zones no less often than every eight years to ensure that each zone has an approximately equal number of Rotarians. The Board’s previous review of the zones occurred in 2008. The Board earlier approved the creation of three regional workgroups to develop rezoning proposals for Asia, Europe/Africa, and the Americas. These workgroups comprised one representative (either a current director,...

Through The Rotary Foundation, Rotary members have supported thousands of projects that promote peace, fight disease, provide clean water, save mothers and children, support education, and grow local economies. We’ve also led the fight to eradicate polio worldwide. As part of our celebration of the Foundation’s centennial, we’re honoring 20 global grant projects with special recognition. This Week at Newark Rotary

Our speaker for this week's meeting is our very own John Bernard, Retired Superintendent of Newark Unified School District.

John will be providing highlights from the 2017 Rotary International Convention, held this past June in Atlanta.

Last Week in Rotary

A Very Civilized Meeting

In last week's meeting, #2 of this Rotary year, we began to settle into a routine for the new year. Can any meeting of the Newark Rotary Club be considered routine?

President Hansen displayed the new Rotary International logo and banner, with the tag line, "Rotary Making a Difference". (The new logo can be seen at the top of this bulletin.) We received a positive response to the colorful nature of the new logo.

One deviation from "normal" was President Hansen's presentation of sunglasses to those who served on last year's board and/or are serving on the 2017-18 board. For all those who have helped bring our club to this point, and who are helping to shape our club going forward, the future is bright indeed! Recognizing Rodana Breen, Matt Breen's wife, for remaining steadfastly cheerful and supportive during Matt's 10 years as club treasurer, President Hansen awarded her a pair of those same coveted "The Future of Newark Rotary is Very Bright" sunglasses.

Rodana Breen is proud to be wearing her new sunglasses during the meeting.

Matt Breen's presentation of school trivia, baseball trivia and crime statistics from his recent vacation in Boston was a big hit with everyone!

With $25 added to the pot, our weekly raffle total was raised to $385. And the lucky winner was . . .

David Zehnder!

Wouldn't it be great if there were a picture of the lucky winner?

(Repeating a request made at the meeting, you are encouraged to take pictures during the meeting and send them to President Hansen for possible inclusion in a weekly Bulletin.)

A Word From the President:

Homework

Last week you saw a glimpse of how Gail and I celebrated our anniversary. Other than an occasional day trip or possible weekend, we don't have plans for any extended vacation this summer.

However, I am more than willing to share a bit of "how I spent my Summer vacation" in advance. My house is a wee bit overdue for exterior painting and landscape updates. But most of all, needing fresh paint. I will be spreading this project out for the remainder of Summer, taking on small bits of it early on weekend mornings, allowing plenty of time for more enjoyable activities.

Here's a peek at what the siding on my garage looked like after my first go at scraping:

What are you doing for fun this Summer?
