The August 7th meeting of Newark Rotary was one at which all members felt very, very safe. In addition to our Newark Police Chief, our two guest law enforcement speakers were "packing."
Presentation: The presentation was provided by Jolie Macias of the Newark Police Dept. and Alameda County Deputy Sheriff's Office Captain Jack Tucker about Urban Shield - illustrating how Police Officers, Fire Fighters, EMT and other First-Responders from local counties, from other states, and from other countries participate in trainings that help prepare them to coordinate their services in ALL emergencies, both man-made and natural.

Chili Pepper Challenge (CPC) Update: It was decided by the members that Newark Rotary's beneficiaries from (CPC) earnings will be evenly split between: Second Chance-Shelter, and The Newark Educational Foundation.
Revenue Needed: Incoming revenue for our Treasury is lower than we'd like, due in part to the fact that Newark Rotarians with July & August: Birthdays, Wedding Anniversaries and/or Club Anniversaries have been on vacation. Not to worry, though, we will collect when they return for all, including brags about their vacations!
BYOB Raffle: Treasurer Jan Crocker won a bottle of wine in the BYOB-Heads/Tails Raffle. It is wondered what she wants to do with her bottle of wine . . . . because she didn't take it when she left the meeting. Is she planning to donate it to this coming week's raffle? We'll see!
Humor: We are living in a time when we are aware of insulting tweets that seem to be (for me) without class. The following historical insults are from an era when cleverness with words was still valued, and not boiled down to 4-letter words, or waving the middle finger.
• "He has Van Gogh's ear for music." Billy Wilder
• "A modest little person, with much to be modest about." Winston Churchil
• "I didn't attend the funeral, but I sent a nice letter saying I approved of it." Mark Twain
Photo Opportunities: New and more current photos of the Newark Rotary Club members are needed for our Club’s website. We are not talking about individual photos, but group photos.
At Tuesday's 8/14/18 meeting we will take a group photo on the stairway at the Double Tree. Most likely right after the 4-Way Test at the beginning of the meeting, and before we sit for the meeting. Please try to not be a late on Tuesday . . we would like everyone in the photo. Other group photo opportunities will include: August 18th - Bike Rodeo, September 7th - Schmoozefest @ Nancy Thomas' home, September 21 - Haystack, September 22 - Newark Days Parade
Money in Your Pocket: The $$-POT for correctly selecting the clear marble continues to grow and now exceeds $200. This week there will be only 4 dark and one clear marble. So it you have the winning ticket you have a 20% chance of being a BIG winner, and everyone's new BFF!
The July 28th meeting was held during the 5th (Somewhat Annual) Paella Fiesta thoughtfully hosted by David and Cora Benoun.
The paella was quite delicious and was prepared by Rotarians and community guests. There were four paellas served: three were Paella Mixta that included chicken, chorizo, linguica, clams, mussels, codfish, scallops, langostino, and shrimp. The fourth paella -- Paella de Pollo -- did not contain any seafood.
The guest speakers at the meeting were Al Huezo and Helen Kennedy who provided an overview of Costa Nova Wines. The presentation included wine tasting of 3 white wines and 3 red wines.
In addition to Newark Mayor Al Nagy attending the meeting/event, visiting Rotarians included: Stephen Allen of the Niles Club, Collin Breen of the Greater Newark Rotaract Club (and Past DG of Rotaract), Janel Breen of the Cupertino Rotary Club, Chuck Canadia of the Niles Rotary Club, Dan Hodsdon of the Danville Rotary Club, and Helen Kennedy of the FUN Club.
Two (2) awards were handed out at the meeting:
- Two Times Past President Al Huezo was recognized and presented with Paul Harris Fellowship +2 pin. This is Al’s third Paul Harris pin and acknowledges Al’s continuous dedication and generosity to implement projects that address pressing needs in communities around the world.
- One Time Past President David Benoun was recognized and presented with Newark Rotary’s first Rotarian of the Month pin in recognition of David’s valuable work this past month on Newark Rotary Club’s Bylaws and Constitution, and coordinating/hosting the Paella Fiesta.
Many thanks to all the Rotarians who assisted with the event. Volunteers showed up the morning to set up the tables and chairs, chop the seafood and vegetables, fuel the propane tanks, cook paella, and clean-up. The event would not have been successful without all of your hard work. A huge THANK YOU!
Also, thanks to those who brought food, supplies, and drinks! Everything tasted great!
Finally, many thanks to Laurence for documenting the event by taking hundreds of photographs and videos! Here are some excerpts:
