Port of Oakland
Jul 06, 2022 1:00 PM
Danny W. Wan was named the Port of Oakland's Executive Director Nov. 14, 2019 by the Oakland Board of Port Commissioners, the Port's seven-member governing body. His appointment represented a natural transition from the increasing advisory and executive management roles he played over the 13 years of service he has given to the Port. Mr. Wan first advised the Port in the 1990s as an external legal counsel to the Aviation Division. From 2005 to 2008, Mr. Wan was Deputy Port Attorney. In 2012, Mr. Wan became Port Attorney and advised the Port Board and staff on a broad range of issues in the conduct of the Port’s Maritime, Aviation, and Commercial Real Estate businesses. Prior to his formal appointment as Executive Director, he served as both acting and interim Executive Director. His comprehensive knowledge of the Port’s integrated operations coupled with his intimate familiarity with the regulatory, community and public policy contexts in which the Port operates has been crucial in providing strategy and support in resolving significant legal and operational challenges. Mr. Wan has been a public servant, local community leader and policy maker. He started his career in the late 1980s as a public-school teacher in Oakland and San Francisco. In 1996, he was elected to the Board of Directors for the East Bay Municipal Utilities District. In 2000, he was appointed to the Oakland City Council to represent the Chinatown/Grand Lake district, becoming the first openly LGBT council member in Oakland, and was elected to the position by voters two years later. As a council member, he led a successful bond initiative to fund clean-up and capital improvements to Lake Merritt and the Oakland Estuary that has resulted in a revitalized and restored Lake Merritt. He authored and passed an ordinance on multi-lingual access to city services as well as domestic partners and Port living wage policies. From 2008 to 2012, Mr. Wan was the City Attorney and Risk Manager for the City of Morgan Hill. In 2017, California Gov. Jerry Brown appointed him to the Sierra Nevada Conservancy which promotes economic development and environmental stewardship of the Sierra Nevada region. Mr. Wan believes in the principles of transparency, common sense and strong ethics, which he believes inspire trust and lead to good decisions and effective implementation of goals and objectives. He welcomes creativity and innovation to advance and solidify the future of the Port as a key local, regional and state economic engine and jobs base. Mr. Wan is committed to operating a Port that facilitates efficient goods movement, provides a convenient and positive airport experience and promotes economic and community benefits for residents of Oakland and the region. Mr. Wan received a Bachelor’s of Arts in Rhetoric and Masters in Education from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Juris Doctorate from the UCLA School of Law. He lives in Oakland with his partner, Oliver. |

As the war in Ukraine intensifies, the number of displaced citizens increases, overloading worldwide international refugee settlement organizations in their efforts to locate temporary homes for refugee families. The WCS Committee will present Ms. Elgiva Wood, of International Rescue Committee, who will describe what we can do to help alleviate this crisis. Our committee is getting organized to qualify Morgan Hill Rotary to host a Ukrainian refugee family here in our community, and Elgiva will set out the parameters for doing our part to provide this badly needed service. Ukrainian immigrants to the US, Michael Pekker and Kira Volynskaya will describe to us what they are currently hearing from families and friends in Ukraine. |

One Ukranian's Journey
Jul 20, 2022 1:00 PM
Roman Moskalenko was born and raised in Kyiv, Ukraine, but began traveling the world at eight years old as both an athlete and explorer. Before deciding to pursue basketball solely, Roman played on Ukraine’s most prestigious soccer team at twelve years old. Within a year he switched sports, and played for the National Team of Ukraine in basketball. At age fifteen, he sent 7,000 emails to schools in the United States and received a full-ride scholarship to Oakwood High School in the Silicon Valley. By 18, Roman opened his own online educational platform, LearnUA, where he and his employed tutors teach Ukrainian language, culture, and history, as well as English. Through LearnUA, Roman has been able to provide employment for Ukrainians. He uses profits to support his family, donate to the Ukrainian army, and was even able to earn enough money to purchase a car to transport soldiers. Having just graduated from Oakwood, Roman will now attend Lehigh University on a full-ride scholarship, as a business major. Roman will speak today about his personal experience with the Russian war in Ukraine, why it is so crucial to support Ukraine, and ways you can help the people and army of Ukraine to stop the genocide and threat over the world’s democracy and humanity. Rotarians, like Roman, are people of action. |

Master Sgt. Leroy Petry
Nov 16, 2022 12:30 PM
Rank and organization: Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company D, 2d Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. Place and date: Paktya Province, Afghanistan, 26 May 2008. Birth: Santa Fe, New Mexico, 29 July 1979. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty: Staff Sergeant Leroy A. Petry distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty in action with an armed enemy in the vicinity of Paktya Province, Afghanistan, on May 26, 2008. As a Weapons Squad Leader with D Company, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Staff Sergeant Petry moved to clear the courtyard of a house that potentially contained high-value combatants. While crossing the courtyard, Staff Sergeant Petry and another Ranger were engaged and wounded by automatic weapons fire from enemy fighters. Still under enemy fire, and wounded in both legs, Staff Sergeant Petry led the other Ranger to cover. He then reported the situation and engaged the enemy with a hand grenade, providing suppression as another Ranger moved to his position. The enemy quickly responded by maneuvering closer and throwing grenades. The first grenade explosion knocked his two fellow Rangers to the ground and wounded both with shrapnel. A second grenade then landed only a few feet away from them. Instantly realizing the danger, Staff Sergeant Petry, unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his safety, deliberately and selflessly moved forward, picked up the grenade, and in an effort to clear the immediate threat, threw the grenade away from his fellow Rangers. As he was releasing the grenade it detonated, amputating his right hand at the wrist and further injuring him with multiple shrapnel wounds. Although picking up and throwing the live grenade grievously wounded Staff Sergeant Petry, his gallant act undeniably saved his fellow Rangers from being severely wounded or killed. Despite the severity of his wounds, Staff Sergeant Petry continued to maintain the presence of mind to place a tourniquet on his right wrist before communicating the situation by radio in order to coordinate support for himself and his fellow wounded Rangers. Staff Sergeant Petry's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service, and reflect great credit upon himself, 75th Ranger Regiment, and the United States Army.
