One Ukranian's Journey
Jul 20, 2022 1:00 PM
Roman Moskalenko was born and raised in Kyiv, Ukraine, but began traveling the world at eight years old as both an athlete and explorer. Before deciding to pursue basketball solely, Roman played on Ukraine’s most prestigious soccer team at twelve years old. Within a year he switched sports, and played for the National Team of Ukraine in basketball. At age fifteen, he sent 7,000 emails to schools in the United States and received a full-ride scholarship to Oakwood High School in the Silicon Valley. By 18, Roman opened his own online educational platform, LearnUA, where he and his employed tutors teach Ukrainian language, culture, and history, as well as English. Through LearnUA, Roman has been able to provide employment for Ukrainians. He uses profits to support his family, donate to the Ukrainian army, and was even able to earn enough money to purchase a car to transport soldiers. Having just graduated from Oakwood, Roman will now attend Lehigh University on a full-ride scholarship, as a business major. Roman will speak today about his personal experience with the Russian war in Ukraine, why it is so crucial to support Ukraine, and ways you can help the people and army of Ukraine to stop the genocide and threat over the world’s democracy and humanity. Rotarians, like Roman, are people of action. |

Dementia is a growing public health crisis and we're not prepared for it. Dementia impacts quality of life not only for us as individuals, but for our families and communities. Speakers:

(plus a special guest TBA)
Robin co-founded the Susan and Charles Berghoff Foundation (2021) and The Sue's Story Project (2017) with Sue and Chuck Berghoff. Their mission is to make a positive impact on the dementia crisis through professional and pre-professional education, medical research, and caregiving resources. Their special focus is Lewy body disease, the second leading cause of progressive dementia after Alzheimer's and related to Parkinson's disease. The Foundation's key partners include Stanford, Kaiser Permanente, SJSU and Santa Clara County. Robin is a Certified Dementia Practitioner. Master Sgt. Leroy Petry
Nov 16, 2022 12:30 PM
Rank and organization: Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army, Company D, 2d Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. Place and date: Paktya Province, Afghanistan, 26 May 2008. Birth: Santa Fe, New Mexico, 29 July 1979. Citation: For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty: Staff Sergeant Leroy A. Petry distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty in action with an armed enemy in the vicinity of Paktya Province, Afghanistan, on May 26, 2008. As a Weapons Squad Leader with D Company, 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Staff Sergeant Petry moved to clear the courtyard of a house that potentially contained high-value combatants. While crossing the courtyard, Staff Sergeant Petry and another Ranger were engaged and wounded by automatic weapons fire from enemy fighters. Still under enemy fire, and wounded in both legs, Staff Sergeant Petry led the other Ranger to cover. He then reported the situation and engaged the enemy with a hand grenade, providing suppression as another Ranger moved to his position. The enemy quickly responded by maneuvering closer and throwing grenades. The first grenade explosion knocked his two fellow Rangers to the ground and wounded both with shrapnel. A second grenade then landed only a few feet away from them. Instantly realizing the danger, Staff Sergeant Petry, unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his safety, deliberately and selflessly moved forward, picked up the grenade, and in an effort to clear the immediate threat, threw the grenade away from his fellow Rangers. As he was releasing the grenade it detonated, amputating his right hand at the wrist and further injuring him with multiple shrapnel wounds. Although picking up and throwing the live grenade grievously wounded Staff Sergeant Petry, his gallant act undeniably saved his fellow Rangers from being severely wounded or killed. Despite the severity of his wounds, Staff Sergeant Petry continued to maintain the presence of mind to place a tourniquet on his right wrist before communicating the situation by radio in order to coordinate support for himself and his fellow wounded Rangers. Staff Sergeant Petry's extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service, and reflect great credit upon himself, 75th Ranger Regiment, and the United States Army.

Chris Ghione will be introducing Darren Arbet, the GM and Head Coach of the Bay Area Panthers. Darren Arbet is in his first season as the head coach of the Panthers following a year as the team’s radio and TV analyst. Arbet comes to Bay Area as a well-known commodity in the South Bay following a decorated career as the head coach of the San Jose Sabercats of the Arena Football League. Arbet won four ArenaBowls with the Sabercats and was twice named AFL Coach of the Year. In Arbet’s 15 seasons as head coach, the Sabercats captured nine Western Division titles. In 2011, Arbet was inducted into the Arena Football League Hall of Fame and has the distinction of being the first African-American professional head coach to win a championship (ArenaBowl XVI over Arizona in 2002). In his final AFL season in 2015, Arbet led the Sabercats to a win in ArenaBowl XXVIII over Jacksonville in his hometown of Stockton. Before becoming head coach in San Jose, Arbet was the special teams coordinator for the Sabercats along with coaching linebackers and fullbacks. In his third year with the program in 2019, Cabrillo improved to 8-3 with a berth in the Living Breath Bowl. Arbet prepared for the Cabrillo job by spending a year at Humboldt State coaching linebackers in 2016. He's also coached collegiately at Sacramento State working with several positions to begin his coaching career in 1990. |
