Sherry Quick/Arlene Greenberg/Sherry Hemingway; and Meet the 2017-2018 RCMH HS Scholarship Awardees!
May 30, 2018
Thirty-one years ago this month, the first women were admitted to Rotary International and shortly thereafter (on May 1, 1988) three women were simultaneously inducted into the Rotary Club of Morgan Hill. From our current perspective, women members in Rotary is a given, but it wasn’t always so. We will look back to the U.S. Supreme Court decision that made it possible nationally, and recognize the men of our club who made it happen locally. Our guests will include our club’s first women Rotarians from 1988, as well as our first women club president. It is a fascinating history that, especially new members, will want to hear. |

Measure Issue Education
Sep 19, 2018 1:00 PM
For the first time, in many years, Morgan Hill has local ballot measures in the upcoming November 2018 election. We will also have informational flyers for each with a website link where further information can be found. In addition, we would like to call attention to County Proposition 6 and the local Morgan Hill infrastructure projects that are tied to the funding source that Prop 6 would end. Lastly, Leslie Little, Assistant City Manager for Community Development, will provide a very brief over view of changes in the affordable housing arena that will likely override our growth control system. |

Rotary Foundation Grant Used to Serve 3100 Primary School Students in Nigeria
Oct 17, 2018 1:00 PM
Femi is a charter member of the Rotary Club of Gbagada South, District 9110, Nigeria, founded in 2003. He is a past president, past Assistant District Governor, and is recognized as a prominent leader in his district. He is from the same club as two previous Nigerian visitors we have had the honor to receive: Nike and Wale.
Femi is here in Morgan Hill visiting all the clubs in Area 6 to express gratitude for our assistance in acquiring a $60k grant from the Rotary Foundation to fund a humanitarian project in an underserved neighborhood in his community, recently completed. That project now provides clean drinking water and toilets to a complex of 7 Primary Schools serving around 3100 pupils, where previously there had been neither water nor bathrooms. This is yielding a huge improvement in the health and quality of life for the students and their families.

As Rotarians we know that there are no borders when it comes to doing good. The Area 6 project, led by Gilroy, is on the same day as the Morgan Hill club's Rebuiding Together project. Be the Inspiration by volunteering on this Area 6 project and signing up online at http://rebuildingtogethersiliconvalley.force.com/GW_Volunteers__PersonalSiteJobListing?jobId=a0T4100000ElSGB Gilroy is asking for volunteers to staff two shifts: First shift: 8am - 12:30pm / Second shift: 12:30pm - 5pm. Lunch will be provided from 12pm - 1pm. There will also be a bathroom onsite for volunteers to use. Please email Ryan Dinsmore or Brian Harrigan with what shift you would prefer as there is not an option for this on the sign up page. You can also email any questions to Ryan Dinsmore (rdinsmore@alpinelandscapesca.com) or Brian Harrigan (brianh@epdins.com). VOLUNTEER DETAILS Date: Saturday, October 27, 2018 Time: 8am – 5pm or until the project is completed (Voluneers are welcome for the full day, or a morning or afternoon shift) Address: 8282 Murray Avenue #16, Wagon Wheel Mobile Village, Gilroy, CA 95020 Parking: Parking is VERY limited. Carpooling is highly recommended. The Area 6 project involves two Gilroy senior residences: HOMEOWNER PROFILE (209): This homeowner is 63 years old and moved into her mobile home in 2015. She was born in San Jose, CA, however she has lived in Gilroy for most of her life. She doesn’t have any children and her closest relative is a nephew that lives nearby. Her income is limited, receiving monthly social security and part-time wages from her job in home care. Her responsibilities for her part time job include, acting as a personal care attendant- doing things like grooming, taking clients to their doctor’s appointments, cooking, etc. She’s done this type of work since the 90s, starting off with In Home Support Services, when her parents’ health began to fail. She cared for her parents until they passed in 2001 and 2008, while also working a full-time job as a receptionist. Today, she assists two permanent clients, twice a week, and works with the senior wellness program, Kindred at Home.
HOMEOWNER PROFILE (210): The homeowner is an 83-year-old woman who has lived alone in her mobile home since 1994. She was born in Oklahoma, but moved to California at the age of 3 so that her parents could pursue better work opportunities. Her home, which was originally owned by her parents, was inherited after their passing. When her father first took ill, she moved in and cared for him up until the time of his death. Shortly after, she did the same for her mother. Over the course of her life she has experienced many hardships, including two failed marriages. Both marriages made for hostile home environments where she experienced multiple infidelities and physical abuse. Fortunately, she came through all of that and has two daughters. As for her career, she worked as a waitress for over 40 years. She loved her work for the social aspect, seeing it as an opportunity to meet people from all different backgrounds. However, as she grew older, the constant standing took a toll on her body, and a required knee replacement forced her into retirement. Today, her health is fair. Her knee is bothersome and she does have scoliosis, but she isn’t using a walker or cane yet. Her daughter, who lives close by, is a frequent visitor at the home, cooking for her mother and occasionally spending the night. It hasn’t been mentioned, but the homeowner does experience some confusion during conversation, and it seems that her daughter’s visits to the home have become more of a necessity. The home is 50 years old and could greatly benefit from repairs. Clothing: Old pants (may get dirt or paint on them) and sensible closed toed shoes. You will receive a t-shirt at the site to wear and take home. For the safety of our homeowners and volunteers, everyone on site must wear the Rebuilding Day t-shirt. Recommended items to bring: ● Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses ● Water bottle (Water coolers will be available at every site for refills) ● Tools that are helpful but not necessary: Hammers, Brooms, Hand tools and saws, Small ladders, Work or Rubber Gloves, etc. ● You may bring snacks, but we will provide pizza for lunch with fruit, cookies, water and soda. |

Service Project - Rebuilding Together. Background info: https://rebuildingtogethersv.org/ Articles on past club projects: https://portal.clubrunner.ca/6773/Stories/rotarians-volunteering-to-improve-our-community and https://portal.clubrunner.ca/6773/Stories/the-rotary-club-of-morgan-hill-s-good-work-noted-in-local-press The Rotary Club of Morgan Hill will be joining over a 1000 other volunteers on Oct. 27, 2018 to make a difference by sponsoring a Rebuilding Together project to repair and improve a home for a deserving senior in our community. Please “Be the Inspiration” and join us on this Service Project. To volunteer, please sign up at http://rebuildingtogethersiliconvalley.force.com/GW_Volunteers__PersonalSiteJobListing?jobId=a0T4100000ElSA8. Judy Henry is once again our club volunteer coordinator. Lynn Alens, who worked with us on past projects, will be the House Captain supervising the project. Lynn and Judy can be identified on the day of the project by their Green t-shirts. The work scope will likely include painting, replacing skirting, and repairing two windows.
Key information
You can make a difference for a deserving senior in our community
The homeowner is 65 years old and has lived in his mobile home for 2 ½ years. He was born in San Jose but decided to make the move to Morgan Hill for several reasons, including skyrocketing rent, a decrease in his income, and overall the desire to have a slower paced lifestyle as he continues to age. His sister and father still live in San Jose and he has two daughters, but only one of them lives in the state.
As for work, it’s been a bit of a struggle. He worked all last year at an AT&T warehouse as an inventory controller and buyer, but he now does odd jobs, here and there, wherever he can find the work. He has a bad back and knees, and trouble with his ankle which has made it difficult for him to find something full-time. In general, he gets around okay, but keeping up with the maintenance of his home has become a struggle due to financial restraints. He was active at the Cathedral of Faith Church in San Jose for over 20 years, volunteering to help church members clean up or paint their homes, but now he finds himself in a similar situation of need. His park manager gave him notice last year to paint the house and fix the skirting, but he does not have the money to complete the work. He appreciates what he does have, which is a good family, and good friends, however he’s reaching out for assistance during a time where money is short.
Recommended items to bring on Oct. 27
Volunteers under the age of 18 must print and have a parent’s signature on the waiver and bring the waiver to the project. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old.
If you have any questions or need to contact Judy at judy.henry@cbnorcal.com or 408 838-1561 or call Jessica, Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley's Program Coordinator at 408 578-9519 x1009.

Let's Talk Cannabis
Nov 07, 2018
Cannabis is fully legal in California. What does that mean? What is cannabis? What are the benefits and how does it affect the body? What is the history of cannabis and why, here in California, it is legal.
Biography
Malisha Kumar's journey with cannabis began when both of her children were diagnosed with a rare food allergy driven autoimmune disease at a young age. Malisha quickly educated herself about her children's conditions and it was then that she became familiar with the use of cannabis in children with seizure disorders. After years of testings, procedures, hospital stays, doctors appointments and late nights, Malisha realized she herself was suffering from symptoms of PTSD. She began to study the use of cannabis for managing PTSD and is now passionate about helping others. Malisha has a BS in Anthropology and a MBA from Santa Clara University.
