How Being Part of History Turned Into a Memoir
Jul 26, 2017
Lt. Col. Pilato takes you back to the Sixties, one of the most turbulent times in modern history. An unpopular war is raging, students are protesting, black neighborhoods are on fire, and women are demanding equality. Angel tells how these events affected her and her decision to join the Air Force. As the first woman Air Force officer assigned to manage an Officers’ Club and the first to run one on a fighter base in Southeast Asia, she gives a unique perspective of the war. In her memoir Angel’s Truck Stop, A Woman’s Love, Laughter, and Loss during the Vietnam War she recounts starting out as a starry-eyed idealist only to realize that she’s going to have to learn how to manage the conflicts, challenges and choices she faces in her trailblazing position. Her last assignment in 1971 at Udorn Air Base, Thailand is where she encounters testosterone-fueled fighter pilots who take off on sorties over dangerous targets in North Vietnam. To celebrate their aerial victories the pilots drive their squadron truck into the Officers’ Club lobby and then head to the bar to drink ‘til dawn. They soon christen the O-Club “Angel’s Truck Stop,” which becomes the backdrop for her authentic war story. |

HOPE INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AGENCY From our commencement more than 4 decades ago HOPE International Development Agency’s intent has been to transform the world by helping one person, one family, one community at a time. HOPE’s core objective is to do our work in a manner that focuses on the self-expressed needs of neglected individuals, families, and communities subject to abject poverty in the developing world. Having good intentions when presented with the issues is not enough. Lasting transformation becomes possible when the conviction of our belief – that the poorest of the poor must have the opportunity to become self-reliant through their own efforts – is fueled by a steadfast commitment to be a key component of this transformation. In 2016 HOPE supported projects in 20+ countries in the Americas, Southeast Asia, South Asia and Africa through offices in the USA, the UK, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Canada. www.hope-international.com CLIFFERD DICK – President, HOPE International Development Agency USA Clifferd met one of the HOPE founders in the Acropole Hotel in Khartoum (Sudan) in the 1980s, and has been associated with HOPE and it’s work to extend compassion to the neglected poor in the developing world since then. He has lived and worked in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal and Cambodia. In his work with HOPE he has managed and visited projects in most of the 20-30 countries where HOPE annually works. Undergraduate education in the USA and Canada. Graduate degree in International Policy from the University of Bristol (UK). MICHELLE WAITE Michelle’s goal in life is to be the most effective purpose-driven, creative collaborator and connector in the world. After a 5 year stint working and living in Singapore, she returned to the San Francisco Bay Area. A successful veteran in B2B international business development and marketing leadership, she has more recently reinvented herself as an impact investor, social entrepreneur and marketing exec in tech. A strong believer in the Conscious Capitalism movement, she advocates for business doing good while doing well. Michelle has volunteered with HOPE in Asia and the USA, helping coordinate events, and has also visited development projects in Cambodia and the Philippines. |

Presentation to the City Council of our club's $100,000 check. The gift supported the development of the Rotary Bridge in the Downtown Creek Park is a 30-foot pedestrian footbridge over Little Llagas Creek is located between 2nd and 3rd streets in the Downtown Creek Park. The bridge will ease access for people coming from the west side of Monterey Road. In addition, our gift paid for the Rotary Slide in the Nob Hill Trail Park is a long green slide, in two segments, sits in a woodland area atop Nob Hill, with access off 3rd St. and 5th St. The slide is on the hill in front of the prominent green water tank facing the downtown. The feature has two sections, with the 21-foot upper segment giving a gentler ride and the lower 35-foot lower segment offering more excitement. Landings for both slides will also serve as observation platforms to enjoy high, Eastern views of the city. The slides, landing and connecting service trails were not included in the base park project budget, thus the Rotary contribution ensured inclusion in the park. |

Ray Piontek (and Central High School Interact Club Bake Sale Fundraiser!!!)
Nov 15, 2017
Our guest speaker for November 15 will be Ray Piontek, founder of the Bay Area Furniture Bank. Ray will discuss his unique program to match a family in need with another entity’s surplus furniture. After a successful military and business career, Ray launched BAFB which is now starting its second year of operation. In its first year of actual operations (ending in September) Ray personally delivered 215 sets of furniture to people in need. Recipients included homeless veterans, military personnel transitioning to civilian life, foster children, flood victims, victims of domestic violence, refugees, and more. Ray only works with referring agencies and church groups to locate his recipients and to ensure they are recognized as deserving. Ray’s unique approach makes it affordable for both the recipients and the donors and tremendously reduces the amount of wasted furnishings going to landfill. We think you will be wow’d with all that Bay Area Furniture Bank and Ray have accomplished in Year One and their goals for going forward. |

The Prosecution and Conviction of Antolin Garcia-Torres for the Kidnap and Murder of Sierra LaMar
Dec 13, 2017
Sierra Mae LaMar was last seen at approximately 6:00 a.m. on March 16, 2012, in the area of Santa Teresa Avenue and Dougherty Avenue in Morgan Hill, California. At that time, Ms. LaMar, who was a 15 year old student at Ann Sobrato High School in Morgan Hill, was preparing to leave her home on foot on her way to catch the bus to school. Sierra never made it to the bus or school that morning and has not been heard from since that time. Despite her body not being found, Antolin Garcia-Torres was arrested and charged with the kidnap and murder of Sierra LaMar. Mr. Garcia-Torres was also charged with trying to kidnap three women in the parking lots of two Morgan Hill Safeway stores in three separate incidents dating back to 2009. On May 9, 2017, Antolin Garcia-Torres was convicted on all four counts. Although the prosecution requested the death penalty in this case, on June 5, 2017, the same jury that convicted Mr. Garcia-Torres recommended that he be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. |
