The Prosecution and Conviction of Antolin Garcia-Torres for the Kidnap and Murder of Sierra LaMar
Dec 13, 2017
Sierra Mae LaMar was last seen at approximately 6:00 a.m. on March 16, 2012, in the area of Santa Teresa Avenue and Dougherty Avenue in Morgan Hill, California. At that time, Ms. LaMar, who was a 15 year old student at Ann Sobrato High School in Morgan Hill, was preparing to leave her home on foot on her way to catch the bus to school. Sierra never made it to the bus or school that morning and has not been heard from since that time. Despite her body not being found, Antolin Garcia-Torres was arrested and charged with the kidnap and murder of Sierra LaMar. Mr. Garcia-Torres was also charged with trying to kidnap three women in the parking lots of two Morgan Hill Safeway stores in three separate incidents dating back to 2009. On May 9, 2017, Antolin Garcia-Torres was convicted on all four counts. Although the prosecution requested the death penalty in this case, on June 5, 2017, the same jury that convicted Mr. Garcia-Torres recommended that he be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. |

At the Dec. 2017 Board of Directors meeting, the committee’s grant recommendations were approved. As a follow up to that approval, all of the grant requestors were notified of their grant status via email. Awardees were also advised that Janene Towner-Chernoff would be reaching out to them regarding participating in a club presentation about how they will use the grants. The date for the presentation has been scheduled for March 21. At this committee meeting, we will discuss the current policy and the current application for the purpose of improving the program. The current policy and application are available on the club website or in the email sent to committee members on Dec. 29. Please review both prior to the meeting.

Mattie Scariot, Festival Director
Mar 07, 2018
On March 7th, Mattie Scariot will provide a preview of the Poppy Jasper International Film Festival, coming to downtown Morgan Hill and Gilroy, April 5th through the 8th, 2018. The four-day event is South County's first and only regional film festival. It's a celebration of one of the hottest areas in the arts today - film and digital media.
Mattie and her husband own 152 WEST, a local film production company with extensive corporate, nonprofit and entertainment productions to its credit. She inherited the role of Festival Director last year from founder Bill Leaman, who recognized it was time to revitalize the event. He saw Mattie as the perfect person for the job because of her professional and nonprofit experience and her passion for filmmaking and supporting talented emerging artists.
In less than a year, Mattie has recruited a new team, rebranded the festival, and not only added new venues but new programs that allow community members to connect with the filmmaking experience. While most people love to go to the movies, they often assume film festivals are only for film students or professionals. Mattie and her team want to change all that. With community support and engagement, they aim to grow Poppy Jasper into a popular tradition that supports South County arts and tourism for years to come.
