Program: Speaking with us today about Ecology Action’s safe routes to school program featuring sustainable non-motor transportation are Jen Werner and Elise Ehrheart.
They are leading the Bike Smart Youth Bicycle Safety Program throughout the county. Additionally they help coordinate Bike to Work/School Days with over 7000 participants last year, more than all of San Francisco.
Bike Smart! encourages youth to bicycle for fun, transportation and health through hands-on bicycle education at local schools. Bike Smart’s bicycle skills “rodeos” (obstacle courses) inspire and empower kids to hop on a bike and leave mom and dad’s car at home. Youth of all ages learn essential bicycling knowledge and skills, such as helmet fit, traffic laws, being visible and riding predictably. Bike Smart! Coordinates with Bike to Work/School and Bike ‘n Hike to conduct motivating sustainable transportation events for young people.
Bike Smart! provides youth essential bicycling skills and exposure for lifelong health and sustainable transportation. We learned that unfortunately fewer kids are walking or biking to school while more parents are driving them there.
1969 48% of students walked or biked to school; 12% of students driven
2009 13% of students walked or biked to school; 44% of students driven
This is due to lack of safe infrastructure, poor education and habits. Driving kids to school contributes 10-14% of rush hour traffic. Sitting in automobile for kids diminishes brain activity, contributes to obesity.
Plenty of opportunity for community members to volunteer with other associated sustainable activities like Active 4 Me, Bike Rodeos, Walking School Bus, and Boltage. http://www.
