Peninsula Clean Energy
Jan 04, 2018
Charlsie Chang is a Community Outreach Fellow at Peninsula Clean Energy.
Peninsula Clean Energy (PCE) is a joint program of the San Mateo County and all its cities to help meet local climate action goals. It provides cleaner electricity at lower rates to almost all San Mateo County residents, businesses, and institutions. Peninsula Clean Energy works in partnership with PG&E, which continues to maintain the electrical grid, provide customer billing, and administer energy efficiency and discount programs. After one year of full countywide operations, Peninsula Clean Energy expects to save East Palo Alto residents $329,000 on their electricity bills. Countywide, electric customers will save about $17 million and avoid 680 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions. Residents, businesses and public institutions all automatically benefit from their share of savings. Meanwhile, large public agencies such as school districts will reap significant savings.

Rising International
Mar 29, 2018
Carmel Jud is Founder / Executive Director of Rising International in Santa Cruz, California. From their website: "At Rising International we spread hope and dignity by selling crafts made by women living in the poorest and most dangerous places in the world; Places where hope is a radical act, and creating beauty is an act of courage and inspiration. Crafts are sold at intimate gatherings in the U.S., often referred to as home parties. Craft sales enable the artisans to find a way out of poverty by running sustainable micro-enterprises. Each craft comes with the story of the artisan, giving her a voice in our world. In the United States, we train women, many economically vulnerable, to run their own Rising Home Party businesses. They earn an income selling crafts for their global sisters. It's a total win-win: The more our local entrepreneurs prosper, the more they change the world." Rising International uses the home party or direct sales model to solve extreme poverty, both locally and globally. Think Avon or Tupperware for a social cause. By using the home party model the organization enables women who are surviving gender-based violence, homelessness, and human trafficking to connect with other survivors around the globe, and through the power of entrepreneurship, help each other to rise. The Berlin Airlift, the Candy Bomber, and I
May 10, 2018
In 1948, Stalin challenged the West to a showdown between communism and democracy. By blocking all land access routes to the Western Zones of Berlin, Stalin took 2.3 million Berliners hostage - doomed to starve to death unless the West surrendered their territory to the Soviets. For 11 months the Allies airlifted billions of pounds of supplies to Berlin, thus sparing West Berlin from Soviet occupation. By treating the hungry children of West Berlin to candy, Lt. Hal Halverson, turned former enemies to friends and the airlift to a joint venture. He was known as the Candy Bomber.
When WWII broke out in 1939, Gisela Zebroski’s privileged childhood came to an abrupt end. The Soviet Union took over Latvia, the country of her birth. Her parents fled to Germany then on to Poland, Austria, and eventually to the US in 1954 where she married, went to college, and became a writer and a novelist. |

Up Academy: shattering the expectations gap
Jun 14, 2018
Up Academy is unique in the world as a lab school for the inclusion of students with physical disabilities. Their target classroom is approximately 70% "typical" kids and 30% kids with physical disabilities. Their programs currently serve primarily Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Mountain View and Los Altos, however as a private school their students could come from all over the Bay Area. In fact, due to the unique nature of their school they expect to draw from all over the world. Their greater vision is to create a method of education that they can teach and can be replicated to help include and educate children globally. About Tanya Sheckley She is a certified yoga teacher, enjoys rock climbing, snowboarding, working out, and going to the local farmers market. |
