With some financial help from The Rotary Foundation, a District Community Grant, and some hard work by some Rotarians - we built a 'natural' playground and some raised garden boxes for the residents of Sanala.
Sanala is the former King Arthur's Court apartment complex on 5th Street in Nanaimo.  The Nanaimo Aboriginal Centre purchased the complex and upgraded the suites - providing secure affordable housing for more than 30 families including 50+ young children.
With a deal from Maxx Contracting (for the mini-excavator) and from Sharecost Nanaimo (for the loam, gravel and rich black garden soil), we (members of the Rotary Club of Lantzville), created a playground with grassy mounds with boulders and stumps to challenge the children's imagination.  We also built and filled four large raised garden boxes and planted some vegetable for the residents to grow and use.
We completed the project May 22nd and left a hose and sprinkler with a plea that Sanala water the turf and vegetables and keep the kids of the playground for a couple of weeks - so the grass would have a chance to grow.
