The Innocence Project of Minnesota (IPMN)
Apr. 05, 2017
The Innocence Project of Minnesota (IPMN) works to keep the innocent from being convicted and to free people imprisoned for crimes they did not commit. We take on the cases of convicted but innocent people; we educate attorneys and criminal justice professionals on best practices; and we work to reform procedures. IPMN will act in any Minnesota case where clear evidence of innocence is present. Eileen will speak on the of the IPMN, causes of wrongful convictions, recent victories and a combination of these topics. Based on the success of the Netflix acclaimed series "Making a Murderer," and the podcast Serial, covering the case of Adnan Syed, they have encountered increasing interest in their work, and received very positive evaluations of our speaking engagements. |

Above and Beyond Academic Counseling
May 24, 2017
An organization that provides long-term academic and college preparation services to first generation and refugee youth in the community. They specialize in supporting first-generation students who have a passion for learning, helping them to flourish into exceptional students capable of reaching their highest visions. Students who enroll in the organization have established a track-record that speaks for itself: becoming top in their graduating classes, A/B students, being admitted into top universities, receiving A’s in their college-level coursework, being awarded academic merits and developing college--even graduate--level skills at a high school age. Their work with families is a long-term partnership during which students grow into academically advanced, well-rounded individuals who are able to thrive in the world. |

Early Childhood/Family Education
May 31, 2017
Less than 70% of Hennepin County high school students graduate; drop-outs are most heavily concentrated in homes/neighborhoods of poverty. The fault line starts at birth and the first five years of life where brain development and social skills develop more rapidly than at any later time in life. Reclaiming lost ground during the K-12 grade levels helps, but it is too late for all but an exceptional few. Who is in the best position to help change this terrible-state during the first five years of a child’s life? Answer: Pediatricians, family physicians and nurse practitioners in medical clinics, who combine health and critical education instruction to parents of new-born and pre-school children. Given present day laws, health coverage is provided for these young children regardless of wealth, racial background, and social standing. Doctors have access, are highly respected by parents, and can make a huge difference in the trajectory of future learning! Reach Out and Read is a national organization founded in Boston in l987. Reach Out and Read, MN was founded in l997; its mission is to recruit medical clinics and train medical providers to add the critical educational component to well visits by emphasizing the importance of reading, talking and singing to children and engaging actively and positively with them from birth. A free, age appropriate children’s book is given to the parent at each clinic visit from age 6 months to 5 years. Why it works? Brain cognitive and psychological development is greater in the first year(s) of life than at any other time during a person’s lifetime. Eighty percent of brain growth happens by age 3. Therein lies the root sources of the “achievement/opportunity gap”. Reach Out and Read, MN, is changing this story |

Youth Success
Sep. 06, 2017
In 2014, Timothy was awarded a scholarship to a Youth Success Program called Eagle University by his dentist, Dr. Jamie Sledd. At that time in his life, he was headed into his senior year and had no idea what he wanted to do post high school. One week at Eagle U changed the course of his life forever. The experience at Eagle U as well as the generosity of one man has inspired Timothy to pay it forward, making a difference in the lives of several individuals and creating leaders in our communities.
