May 24 - Roy Elkins, creator of broadjam inc. and Chair of the Madison Area Music Association, talked to the club about his passion, putting musical instruments into the hands of underprivileged kids.
He knows and reminded us of the value of early musical education. It's proven to improve school performance, sharpen reasoning and analytical skills, improves reading and memory, even makes it easier to learn other languages. He noted that karaoke can help motivate and improve reading skills. The biggest plus is that the child can play an instrument!

Elkins and a group of similarly impassioned musicians formed the MAMA Inc. to raise money for instruments and their refurbishing. Most of these go to schools but Elkins would like to see more requests from individual kids. So far they've been able to meet all requests. The group started the MAMAs performance that was held in the Overture â€" Center, â€" Capital Theater. It recognize young talent in an annual show but also opens with adult performers, includes young dancers, and features the Final Forte â€" the best young performers in the state. This year Aaron Williams and his band the Hoodoo took home "Artist of the Year" honors at the seventh annual MAMAs on May 7 at the Capitol Theater. The MAMA group attracted an array of sponsors for the event

There are always needs â€" one can donate funds, give a usable instrument, offer to volunteer or serve on the Board. To get involved, or learn more visit
