Rotary Club of Comox
Meeting Highlights
Thursday, October 5th, 2017.

Guest Speaker:  Colin Boyd
October is Rotary Vocational Service Month.  With that in mind, our program featured a speaker whose area of research is business ethics.  Dr. Colin Boyd delivered on the promise that this would be an informative, engaging, and entertaining presentation.  Interestingly, he compared various approaches to determine fairness to Rotary’s Four Way Test.

Dr. Boyd spoke to a very attentive audience and although our regular closing time had slipped slightly by,  noone moved until the final words were spoken.  Suffice to say, it was a thought provoking evening.  A resource is provided below for both those who were not able to attend last Thursday’s meeting (you missed a lot!) and for those who were but would like to revisit the wisdom of the now retired Professor Colin Boyd, who is now a Hornby Island back hoe operator.

Sargent at Arms:  LaCosta Squires
Our LaCosta found a most entertaining way to perform her Sargent at Arms Duties … especially the fun way that folks were called to the buffet table.  Well done, LaCosta.

Events

Guest Speaker:  Working Toward a Respectful, Inclusive Community
•  Thursday, October 19th.
The topic of Sargent Nina Usherwood’s presentation is:  My Life as a Transgender Woman in the Military.  Rotarians from other clubs in the Valley are most welcome as our friends and family.

Polio Month
Our club has planned two wonderful ways to acknowledge Polio Month.

•  October 12th.   Joan Toone, a polio survivor, will be our guest speaker.

•  Saturday, October 21st.  Guess Who’s Coming … an evening of fun and fundraising.

The name of the evening says it all … well, almost.  Here’s how it works.  Members of our club volunteer to host a group of 8 to 10 participants.  Hosts do not know who is coming to dinner; guests do not know where they are going for dinner (until the day of the event) … nor do guests know who else will be joining them for a night of food and festivity.  Jo, Hannah, and Rod are the masterminds behind the organizational task and will, of course, take food sensitivities into account as they assign guests to host.

  • Hosts prepare the main entrée
  • Guests are assigned to bring appies, veggies, salads, desserts
  • Guests bring wine

So, how is this a fundraiser?  Well …
  • Each attending member will be asked to “pay” for the meal by making a donation to Polio Plus.
•  Forms and donation envelopes will be circulated to Hosts, who will distribute them at the dinner.

November 2nd Auction Night
This is one of our major-fundraising events of the Rotary year and we have Victor to thank for getting things rolling.  Please start thinking about what you can contribute to the evening.

And remember … this is an evening to which we can invite friends and family.   It’s always a sell-out … and lots of fun.

Bylaws Meeting
Date:  Thursday, October 12th
Time:  8:00 p.m. (after our regular meeting)

Quorum Required:  This important meeting requires a quorum, which for our club means that a minimum of 25 must be in attendance.   Please do plan to be part of the conversation and the decision-making.

The Bylaws Committee worked hard over the summer to adjust the bylaws in keeping with members’ wishes.  Copies of the proposed changes have been sent to all members via ClubRunner.  They can also be accessed in the Member Area of ClubRunner under “View Documents”.  Hard copies have been prepared and are available at the sign-in table.
