Campbell River & District Adult Care Society

As has been previously reported, Campbell River Daybreak Rotary responded to a request from the Campbell River & District Adult Care Society to build a Senior-friendly patio garden which included specialty benches and planters. Club members were thrilled at the prospect of a hands-on project and finding volunteers was not a problem.

Further to my email of November 11, 2011, just a reminder to please review the legislative proposals, in particular the one about attendance, i.e. to eliminate the attendance requirement.   Articles, 9 and 12 regarding attendance are lengthy but I urge you to carefully consider this particular proposal.  
 We will have a brief discussion about the proposals at our next meeting Tuesday Nov 22.  If you have any questions  or concerns about the proposals, contact me.   If I cannot answer your question, I will endeavor to find the answer.

Article 9 Attendance

Article 9 Attendance

Section 1-General provisions. Each club member brings a uniqueness of knowledge, skills and character that contributes to the health and vitality of the club. Therefore, all Rotarians are encouraged to actively participate in the regular weekly meetings and projects of the club to the best of their ability.

Section 2-Make-ups.If unable to attend a regular meeting, members may participate in a make-up at another club or by means of the e-Club option.

Section 3-Leave of absence. Upon written application to the board, a club member in good standing, setting forth good and sufficient cause, may be granted a Leave of Absence excusing him/her from attending the meetings of the club for a specified length of time. (Note: Such leave of absence does operate to prevent forfeiture of membership and does not operate to give the club credit for the member’s attendance. Unless he/she attends a regular meeting of some other club or e-Club the excused member shall be recorded as absent.)

(Select one introductory paragraph to Section 1)

Section 1 — General Provisions. Each member should attend this club’s regular

meetings. A member shall be counted as attending a regular meeting if the member is

present for at least 60 percent of the meeting, or is present and is called away

unexpectedly and subsequently produces evidence to the satisfaction of the board that

such action was reasonable, or makes up for an absence in any of the following ways:


Section 1 (for e-Clubs) — General Provisions. Each member should attend this

club’s regular meetings. A member shall be counted as attending a regular meeting if

the member participates in the regular meeting posted on the club’s Web site within one

week following its posting, or makes up a missed meeting in any of the following ways:

(a) 14 Days Before or After the Meeting. If, within fourteen (14) days before or after

the regular time for that meeting, the member

(1) attends at least 60 percent of the regular meeting of another club or of a

provisional club; or

(2) attends a regular meeting of a Rotaract or Interact club, Rotary Community

Corps, or Rotary Fellowship or of a provisional Rotaract or Interact club, Rotary Community Corps, or Rotary Fellowship; or

(3) attends a convention of RI, a council on legislation, an international assembly,

a Rotary institute for past and present officers of RI, a Rotary institute for

past, present, and incoming officers of RI, or any other meeting convened

with the approval of the board of directors of RI or the president of RI acting

on behalf of the board of directors of RI, a Rotary multizone conference, a

meeting of a committee of RI, a Rotary district conference, a Rotary district

assembly, any district meeting held by direction of the board of directors of

RI, any district committee meeting held by direction of the district governor,

or a regularly announced intercity meeting of Rotary clubs; or


(4) is present at the usual time and place of a regular meeting of another club for

the purpose of attending such meeting, but that club is not meeting at that time

or place; or

(5) attends and participates in a club service project or a club-sponsored

community event or meeting authorized by the board; or

(6) attends a board meeting or, if authorized by the board, a meeting of a service

committee to which the member is assigned; or

(7) participates through a club web site in an interactive activity requiring an

average of 30 minutes of participation.

When a member is outside the member’s country of residence for more than fourteen

(14) days, the time restriction shall not be imposed so that the member may attend

meetings in another country at any time during the travel period, and each such

attendance shall count as a valid make-up for any regular meeting missed during the

member’s time abroad.

(b) At the Time of the Meeting. If, at the time of the meeting, the member is

(1) traveling with reasonable directness to or from one of the meetings specified

in sub-subsection (a) (3) of this section; or

(2) serving as an officer or member of a committee of RI, or a trustee of The

Rotary Foundation; or

(3) serving as the special representative of the district governor in the formation

of a new club; or

(4) on Rotary business in the employ of RI; or

(5) directly and actively engaged in a district-sponsored or RI- or Rotary

Foundation-sponsored service project in a remote area where making up

attendance is impossible; or

(6) engaged in Rotary business duly authorized by the board which precludes

attendance at the meeting.

Section 2 — Extended Absence on Outposted Assignment. If a member will be working

on an outposted assignment for an extended period of time, attendance at the meetings

of a designated club at the site of the assignment will replace attendance at the regular

meetings of the member’s club, provided there is a mutual agreement between the two


Section 3 — Excused Absences. A member’s absence shall be excused if

(a) the absence complies with the conditions and under circumstances approved by the

board. The board may excuse a member’s absence for reasons which it considers to be good and sufficient. Such excused absences shall not extend for longer than

twelve months.

(b) the age of the member is 65 and above and the aggregate of the member’s years of

age and years of membership in one or more clubs is 85 years or more and the

member has notified the club secretary in writing of the member’s desire to be

excused from attendance and the board has approved.

Section 4 — RI Officers’ Absences. A member’s absence shall be excused if the member

is a current officer of RI.

Section 5 — Attendance Records. In the event that a member whose absences are excused

under the provisions of subsection 3(b) or section 4 of this article attends a club

meeting, the member and the member’s attendance shall be included in the membership

and attendance figures used to compute this club’s attendance.

Article 12- Duration of Membership

Article 12 Duration of Membership

Section 1 —

Period. Membership shall continue during the existence of this club unless

terminated as hereinafter provided.

Section 2 —

Automatic Termination.

(a) Membership Qualifications. Membership shall automatically terminate when a

member no longer meets the membership qualifications, except that

(1) the board may grant a member moving from the locality of this club or the

surrounding area a special leave of absence not to exceed one (1) year to

enable the member to visit and become known to a Rotary club in the new

community if the member continues to meet all conditions of club


(2) the board may allow a member moving from the locality of this club or the

surrounding area to retain membership if the member continues to meet all

conditions of club membership.

(b) How to Rejoin. When the membership of a member has terminated as provided in

subsection (a) of this section, such person, provided such person’s membership

was in good standing at the time of termination, may make new application for

membership, under the same or another classification. A second admission fee

shall not be required.

(c) Termination of Honorary Membership. Honorary membership shall automatically

terminate at the end of the term for such membership as determined by the board.

However, the board may extend an honorary membership for an additional period.

The board may revoke an honorary membership at any time.

Section 3 —

Termination Non-payment of Dues.

(a) Process. Any member failing to pay dues within thirty (30) days after the

prescribed time shall be notified in writing by the secretary at the member’s last

known address. If the dues are not paid on or before ten (10) days of the date of

notification, membership may terminate, subject to the discretion of the board.

(b) Reinstatement. The board may reinstate the former member to membership upon

the former member’s petition and payment of all indebtedness to this club.

However, no former member may be reinstated to active membership if the former

member’s classification is in conflict with article 8, section 2.

Section 4 —

Termination Non-attendance.


Unless otherwise excused by the board, any member who fails to attend or make up a number of regular meetings as determined at the discretion of the board, shall be informed by the board that the member’s non-attendance may be considered a request to terminate membership in this club. Thereafter, the board, by majority vote, may terminate the member’s membership.

(a) Attendance Percentages. A member must

(1) attend or make up at least 50 percent of club regular meetings in each half of

the year;

(2) attend at least 30 percent of this club’s regular meetings in each half of the

year (assistant governors, as defined by the board of directors of RI, shall be

excused from this requirement).

If a member fails to attend as required, the member’s membership shall be subject

to termination unless the board consents to such non-attendance for good cause.

(b) Consecutive Absences. Unless otherwise excused by the board for good and

sufficient reason or pursuant to article 9, sections 3 or 4, each member who fails to

attend or make up four consecutive regular meetings shall be informed by the

board that the member’s non-attendance may be considered a request to terminate

membership in this club. Thereafter, the board, by a majority vote, may terminate

the member’s membership.

Section 5 —

Termination Other Causes.

(a) Good Cause. The board may terminate the membership of any member who ceases

to have the qualifications for membership in this club or for any good cause by a

vote of not less than two-thirds of the board members, at a meeting called for that

purpose. The guiding principles for this meeting shall be article 7, section 1; The

Four-Way Test; and the high ethical standards that one should hold as a Rotary

club member.

(b) Notice. Prior to taking any action under subsection (a) of this section, the member

shall be given at least ten (10) days’ written notice of such pending action and an

opportunity to submit a written answer to the board. The member shall have the

right to appear before the board to state the member’s case. Notice shall be by

personal delivery or by registered letter to the member’s last known address.

(c) Filling Classification. When the board has terminated the membership of a

member as provided for in this section, this club shall not elect a new member

under the former member’s classification until the time for hearing any appeal has

expired and the decision of this club or of the arbitrators has been announced.

However, this provision shall not apply if, by election of a new member, the

number of members under the said classification would remain within provided

limitations even if the board’s decision regarding termination is reversed.

Section 6 —

Right to Appeal, Mediate or Arbitrate Termination.

(a) Notice. Within seven (7) days after the date of the board’s decision to terminate

membership, the secretary shall give written notice of the decision to the member.

Within fourteen (14) days after the date of the notice, the member may give written

notice to the secretary of the intention to appeal to the club, request mediation, or

to arbitrate as provided in article 16.

(b) Date for Hearing of Appeal. In the event of an appeal, the board shall set a date for

the hearing of the appeal at a regular club meeting to be held within twenty-one

(21) days after receipt of the notice of appeal. At least five (5) days’ written notice

of the meeting and its special business shall be given to every member. Only

members shall be present when the appeal is heard.

(c) Mediation or Arbitration. The procedure utilized for mediation or arbitration shall

be as provided in article 16.

(d) Appeal. If an appeal is taken, the action of the club shall be final and binding on all

parties and shall not be subject to arbitration.

(e) Decision of Arbitrators or Umpire. If arbitration is requested, the decision reached

by the arbitrators or, if they disagree, by the umpire shall be final and binding on

all parties and shall not be subject to appeal.


(f) Unsuccessful Mediation. If mediation is requested but is unsuccessful, the member

may appeal to the club or arbitrate as provided in subsection (a) of this section.

Section 7 —

Board Action Final. Board action shall be final if no appeal to this club is

taken and no arbitration is requested.

Section 8 —

Resignation. The resignation of any member from this club shall be in

writing, addressed to the president or secretary. The resignation shall be accepted by

the board if the member has no indebtedness to this club.

Section 9 —

Forfeiture of Property Interest. Any person whose club membership has

been terminated in any manner shall forfeit all interest in any funds or other property

belonging to this club if, under local laws, the member may have acquired any right to

them upon joining the club.

Section 10 —

Temporary Suspension.

Notwithstanding any provision of this constitution, if in the opinion of the board

(a) credible accusations have been made that a member has refused or neglected to

comply with this constitution, or has been guilty of conduct unbecoming a member

or prejudicial to the interests of the club; and

(b) those accusations, if proved, constitute good cause for terminating the membership

of the member; and

(c) it is desirable that no action should be taken in respect of the membership of the

member pending the outcome of a matter or an event that the board considers

should properly occur before such action is taken by the board; and

(d) that in the best interests of the club and without any vote being taken as to his or

her membership, the member’s membership should be temporarily suspended and the member should be excluded from attendance at meetings and other activities of

this club and from any office or position the member holds within the club. For the

purposes of this clause, the member shall be excused from fulfilling attendance

the member as aforesaid for such period and on such further conditions as the board

determines, albeit for a period no longer than is reasonably necessary in all the circumstances.

To allow Rotarians; honorary Rotarians; employees of a club, district, or other

Rotary Entity or of Rotary International; or spouses, lineal descendants (child

or grandchild by blood, legal adoption, or marriage without adoption), spouses

of lineal descendants, or ancestors (parent or grandparent by blood) of persons

in the foregoing categories to be eligible for Ambassadorial Scholarships if they

meet all of the other requirements.


Proposed by the Rotary Club of Comox.

Endorsed by District 5020 through email balloting.


WHERAS, current Rotary Foundation qualifications for Ambassadorial Scholars currently restrict Rotarians, Rotarian family members, Rotarian associates, and Rotarian employees from an award of scholarship, and

WHEREAS, part of the Four Way Test states, "Is it Fair to All concerned", and

WHEREAS, another part of the Four Way Test states, "Is it Beneficial to All concerned,

IT IS RESOLVED by Rotary International that the Board of Directors of Rotary International consider requesting the Trustees of the Rotary Foundation to amend Section 7.030 of the current Rotary Foundation Code of Policies and Section 9.3 of the Rotary Foundation Bylaws to eliminate all restrictions from Ambassadorial Scholarships against Rotarians, their descendants, their relatives, associates, and employees.

The proposed change to page 124 of the 2010 MOP is as follows:


A candidate for a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship must demonstrate

outstanding potential as an ambassador of goodwill, which can be

measured through leadership skills, communication skills, and commitment

to service. Applicants must have completed at least two years of university

or college coursework, or must have a secondary education and have been

employed in a recognized profession for at least two years when the scholarship

begins. Applicants must be citizens of a Rotary country. Candidates cannot

be Rotarians; honorary Rotarians; employees of a club, district, or other

Rotary Entity or of Rotary International; or spouses, lineal descendants (child

or grandchild by blood, legal adoption, or marriage without adoption), spouses

of lineal descendants, or ancestors (parent or grandparent by blood) of persons

in the foregoing categories.

Initial application must be made through a Rotary

club in the applicant’s legal or permanent residence or place of full-time study

or employment.

Annual Theme and Program Emphasis

Rotarians are encouraged to present and emphasize only the annual theme, "Service Above Self", at district conferences, at other district meetings, in printed materials, and during "official visits" by RI officers. The annual theme is the only theme which should be utilized, and the use of other themes should be discouraged.


Nearly every major corporation in the world has a theme, tagline, or advertising "hook" that is part of their marketing efforts and establishes their identity. That theme sets them apart from other companies.

IBM is "Big Blue", Fosters is "Australian for Beer", Coca-Cola is "The Real Thing", and Nike is "Just Do It". When a company cannot decide on a theme, or changes it without proper market research, consumers become confused and even migrate to a competitor. (Look what happened to Coca Cola when it changed marketing. It lost market share and had to bring back "Classic Coke".)

Rotary changes its’ theme every year at the discretion of the President. While the President of Rotary International can and should emphasize an area of Service that is most meaningful to that person:

Peace and conflict prevention/resolution, Disease prevention and treatment, Water and sanitation, Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy, Economic and community development, and Polio Eradication the annual theme should be constant.

From a cost perspective, changing pins, ties, and banners every year is wasteful. The money spent on such accessories would do far more good if spent in one of the areas of emphasis.

From a branding perspective the Rotary wheel should be synonymous with service. See the pin, think Service.

30,000 Kenyans have clean water...Thanks Rotary!

More than 1 billion people lack access to a safe reliable source of drinking water, two billion lack access to any sanitary means of excreta disposal. Combined with unsafe hygiene practices, the result is nearly 1.8 million deaths per year, the vast majority children from diarrhea related illness. In response to this ongoing tragedy Campbell River Daybreak Rotary Club determined to undertake water and sanitation projects in Naivasha, Kenya.  A donation from the City of Campbell River held in trust for projects in Kenya began the process to raise the $21,000 required to provide water storage, proper toilet facilities and tree growth for 3,000 students at six different schools.


Impressed by the ability of Daybreak’s sister club in Naivasha to deliver on these projects, a decision was made to investigate the possibilities of providing the 30,000 citizens of the city with fresh water.  

This project would require the funds to: develop a 220m deep bore hole, build a large central tank (50,000L), construct 6 storage tanks (20,000L each), install gravity feed pipes to houses and areas and provide hygiene and sanitation training for approximately 600 people, including teachers and community leaders. Port Hardy, Comox, Courtenay Sunrise, Cumberland and Campbell River Rotary joined with Campbell River Daybreak Club to raise the funds. Impressed with the breadth of the project and partnerships, Rotary International agreed to provide matching funds. The goal of $62,250 US was achieved; the real work began.


In 2012, under the project management of the Naivasha Rotary Club, the digging of the bore hole began. Clean water was found at a depth of 270 metres. Trenches were dug, pipes laid, storage tanks built.

On September 16, 2014 clean fresh water was pumped to the surface and made available to the newly constructed women’s medical/maternity clinic and the 30,000 citizens of Naivasha, Kenya.  This extraordinary achievement was possible only through the united purpose of North Island Rotary clubs and the management skills and perseverance of the members of their sister club in Naivasha, Kenya.


“There is a great deal of satisfaction to be gained upon completion of this sustainable project that brought together the efforts of so many organizations and people all pulling in the same direction with a common purpose” said Dave Bazowski, President Daybreak Rotary. “While we are worlds apart in so many ways, the basic needs of people effectively brought us together in the same room with the determination to succeed!!”

A new year has started!

Happy New Year to you! Here we are, January 2014 and Campbell River Daybreak Rotary is excited to get going on a fantastic upcoming year. Our student exchange Brazilian gem is very happy with his 1/2 year and looking forward to the next 7 months. We've got several of our members leaving on an African trip to personally hand out wheelchairs thanks to our amazing fund raiser "Dancing & Tapas" which is already well under way with the planning committee. This incredible event with the North Island College Culinary Arts program is always a hit and it sells out fast so stay tuned and check back often so you don't miss out! Our service committee is planning our BBQ cookouts for various groups and although we have handed out an amazing amount of money so far there is always programs and ideas we are reviewing and looking in to. President elect Dave will be heading soon to Tacoma for his training weekend and he is gearing up for a wonderful year starting in July when he takes over from Darryn. Kelly is planning our next Duck Dip and the PR Committee is excited to get promoting all of our events. Our literacy programs increase every year and there's no stoping Bruce and his team with all they have planned. Our international service committee is vibrant and strong finishing up some amazing programs and looking forward to more. Our membership is the biggest it has ever been…..why? Because we're an awesome group of vibrant people and business professionals that are so giving and dedicated. We are united and we are strong! We support each other in all our Rotary initiatives and it's quite simply a fun group to be a part of! Come join us and see what we're all about. Daybreak Rotary purchased 60 ten dollar Tim Horton Cards to be given out to Beacon Club members at their Christmas Party as Christmas presents. Tim Hortons gave us an additional 15 ten dollar cards as well. We will use these additional cards for another donation in the future as the Beacon Club only needed sixty. We serve hundreds and it take a lot of prep and dedication to cook that many burgers and dogs!

On Father's Day we got together and cooked on our BBQ trailer for the River Sportsman event that unveiled a commissioned statue carving of Roderick Haig Brown. Max Chickite was the carver and there were a few hundred people that came out to take part in the days events which included a donation by Ken Enns & River Sportsman to the Haig Brown Institute for $10,000.00. Our club raised enough money that day to cover all the food costs and to throw in an additional $300 which we were happy to do! ImageImage

All about the Karl Ulig Garden

 In or around 1992 I was the community services chair for the Daybreak Rotary Club and at that time we as club wanted to get involved in a "hands-on" project that we could call our own.   We canvased the membership for ideas and at that time Ron Kerr was a member of the club and he came up with the suggestion to build a therapeutic garden for those people living in the Sunshine lodge adjacent to the current garden.  This would be a place where family members could visit and those interned could go into the garden to work at the raised garden or to simply admire what was growing.

 We poled the membership and all were heartily in agreement to proceed.  We therefore set in motion the necessary steps to determine whether it would be feasible to build this on hospital property.  We contacted Linda Latham who gave us assistance and who put us in contact with the union rep. as we had to determine who would be responsible for maintaining the garden.

 Once these issues were ratified our club along with Ron Kerr set about creating the plans for the garden and what it would contain in terms of being user friendly.  Many in our club such as Don Jesse (concrete forming and installation, Grant Erickson fabricating the raised garden bed, Ron Kerr (plants ertc) , Grant Signs (Karl Ulig sign) Revy (Jim Harris) (hiab truck and building materials)  and a host of other talented individuals who contributed and built the necessary infrastructure that would become part of the garden.  It took us one weekend of "grunt" work to complete plus a couple of more days to tidy up to complete the project after which we had a dedication ceremony with the residents, their families, and members of our club.

The name of the garden was Ron's idea as he either knew or researched who the first gardener of the hospital was -- Karl Ulig
and our club agreed to name the garden after him.

This was truly our first hands-on project and of course the rest is history with our huge project -- the Maritime Heritage Centre many years in the future.

Image The River City players are doing renovations on their building at 1080 Hemlock where the old Nautilus Gym used to be. They are a non profit community theatre, and a lot of people of all ages participate, learn, volunteer, and entertain Campbell Riverites with their plays.

Walk in Support of Mental Health!

Barbara Swanston (blue t shirt)  came to speak to Daybreak Rotary at our meeting on May 14th to raise awareness about the stigma of mental illness and suicide. This is a new grass roots group that consists of Campbell Riverites who have lost children to suicide. Their Walk in Support of Mental health is looking for sponsors. As some of the sponsorship money will be going outside the community, the best way to keep the funds in the community was to make a donation to the Beacon Club in Support of the Walk. The Beacon Club supplied volunteers for this event.
The committee approved a donation of $750 to the Beacon Club as a way of supporting Mental Illness Awareness Week, on October 6-13, 2013, as well as the Walk in Support of Mental Health.

You ask….who is David Vest?

David can be seen exclusively in Campbell River at our upcoming Wine & Blues Fest on Saturday June 15th at the Maritime Heritage Centre! 

Although he now calls Canada home, Maple Blues Award winner David Vest is an authentic, Southern-bred boogie-woogie piano player and blues shouter. Born in Alabama in 1943, David grew up in Birmingham, not far from Tuxedo Junction. He played his first paying gig in 1957, and by the time he opened for Roy Orbison on New Year's Day 1962, he was a seasoned veteran of Gulf Coast roadhouses and honky tonks.

At the age of 17, David went on tour with Jerry Woodard and the Esquires, some of whom later became key members of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and the Muscle Shoals Horns. While still with Woodard, he jammed with Ace Cannon, Bill Black's Combo and the Jimmy Dorsey Band in clubs along the Florida Panhandle, where fellow Alabaman James Harman would soon make his mark.

He had seen Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash in the 1950s. He saw Bo Diddley, Jimmy Reed, and John Lee Hooker in the prime of their careers. Sam Cooke, Clyde McPhatter and Hank Ballard, too. About the time he turned 21 he found himself onstage backing Big Joe Turner, who said that David Vest's playing made him feel like he was back home in Kansas City.

He had also worked the southern gospel circuit, appearing on programs with the Statesmen and the Blackwood Brothers. His first recording featured the last song written by Alton Delmore. David himself wrote the first songs ever recorded by Tammy Wynette, as detailed in Jimmy McDonough's bio of the country legend. He also dated a sister of the Louvin Brothers, toured with Faron Young (who threatened to kill him), backed Red Foley in a show where all the stars got robbed, worked in a theatre with Fannie Flagg and became the first American artist to record an album in Romania, after his appearance at the Sibiu Jazz Festival.

Later David would receive the "direct laying on of hands" from piano legends like Big Walter The Thunderbird and Floyd Dixon. He would tour extensively with Jimmy T99 Nelson and Miss Lavelle White. Katie Webster told him, "I knows it when I hears it."

From 2002 through 2006, he shared lead vocals and frontman duties in the Paul deLay Band, culminating in his performance on an award-winning live CD, which reached the Top Ten on Billboard's national blues chart. During his years in Portland, David won five Muddy Awards from the Cascade Blues Association, including Best Keyboard Player.

After deLay's untimely death, Vest joined forces with Kenny 'Blues Boss' Wayne and various other pianists, including Ann Rabson, to form the supergroup Northwest Pianorama.

David's many festival appearances include the Tremblant International Blues Festival, Seattle's Bumbershoot, the King Biscuit Festival, the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival, the Winthrop Rhythm & Blues Festival, the Edmonton Labatt's Blues Festival, the Calgary Blues Festival, the Baltimore Blues Festival, Houston's Juneteenth Festival, the Ritzville Blues Festival, the Salem Arts Festival and the New Orleans Jazz Heritage Festival (with Miss Lavelle White).

In 2005, an Oregon Public Broadcasting "Art Beat" feature on David Vest was voted a "Viewer Favorite," beating out Pink Martini and other NW notables.

In 2012 he recorded and released East Meets Vest, backed by members of Downchild and Fathead. Holger Petersen of CBC Saturday Night Blues called it "one of the best Canadian blues albums of 2012."

David's piano work can also be heard on Bill Johnson's Juno-nominated Still Blue, and on David Gogo's Christmas with the Blues.

Since 2006 the Daybreak Rotary Club in conjunction with the Noon Rotary Club of Campbell River successfully completed and delivered already 5 containers of Wheelchairs in the following countries :  Peru, Venezuela, Argentina, Phillipines and this year Colombia. We have two more containers fully paid up but not delivered. Next January 2014 we are going to deliver to South Africa and the year after in 2015,  to Bolivia.
Keep in mind that every unit contains 280 brand new wheelchairs. In 2014, our next fundraiser will be for the country of Vietnam. This will be our 8th container of wheelchairs we are fundraising for in our community of Campbell River. Out of every event we are donating a culinary arts bursary in the amount of $ 2000.00 to the culinary arts students at North Island College in Campbell River.

Our mission statement is simple: One wheelchair at the time. There is nothing nicer and rewarding then to help someone  in need and give them back their mobility and dignity. It can be done  in Canada or anywhere else in the world.

What began as a dream of how we could provide mobility through wheelchairs for those whose lives had been seriously handicapped by accidents or unfortunate birth circumstances.. Has become an annual Campbell River tradition….and a dream come true!  The Campbell River Daybreak Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Campbell River are so proud to have hosted another very successful Dancing and Tapas evening on April 27 at the Timberline /North Island Cafeteria.  We raised a whole container of 280 wheelchairs for delivery to Bolivia!


This seventh Wheelchair Foundation fundraiser has enabled our local Rotary Clubs together with the collaborative efforts of so many community partners to raise funds to support those who have mobility challenges.  Previous efforts have raised money for Peru, Venezuela, Argentina, the Philippines, Colombia and South Africa.   The evening couldn’t be the success it is without the generosity of the Campbell River community, whether planning and preparing a unique ethnic meal, donating popular auction items, attending the Dances and Tapas evening or buying a wheelchair …. so that a life can be changed. 


What a great evening of food, fellowship, and dance!  We want you to know how much it means to us as an organization that believes in community and international service to know that you have taken time, energy, and a spirit of giving to be a vital part of such a memorable and fun filled evening. Please know that you have helped to make a tremendous difference to the some adults and children in Bolivia whose lives will be transformed when the wheelchairs are eventually delivered.

A penny.....a potential life!

A penny can go a long way......Our generous members over the last few weeks have brought 47,787 pennies to our weekly meeting which thanks to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and an initiative by the Canadian Government that will grow by 200% which is enough money to immunize just under 2400 children to ensure they will never get polio. A small cost for a potential life.
