Rotary District Environmental Ambassador Fred Horch shares key facts and insights about solar power in Maine, explaining why and how to go solar at home or at work. Learn the key benefits that are driving the exponential growth rate in solar installations in Maine, and the solar options available to every Maine household and business who would like to lower their energy costs and increase their sustainability.
Fred is the principal advisor for Sustainable Practice, whose mission is to help individuals, organizations, and businesses, become superbly sustainable. He has been doing sustainability work for over 30 years after a brief career as a corporate attorney. He owns a mechanical contracting company that helps businesses be more efficient, and he has also been in leadership roles for nonprofits concerned with the environment. Writing weekly free science-based action guides on Substack, and offering presentations about solar power, recycling, battery technology, gardening, composting, energy use, and other sustainable practices, Fred is also writing a sustainability handbook and developing an app to enable people to calculate their own sustainability score.
A past president of the Brunswick Rotary, Fred is also the volunteer director of On the Pathway to 100% Clean Energy here in Maine and is active with the Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group.
Mourning the Passing of Don Zillman | by Larry Gross
Portland Rotary Club members were deeply saddened to learn of the unexpected death of Past President Don Zillman (2017-2018) last Thursday at age 79. Don first joined Portland Rotary in 1992 while Dean of the University of Maine School of Law. He left Portland for several years to serve in leadership positions for the University of Maine, returning to our Club in 2014. In 2021, he retired to join his wife Linda as New Mexico residents. Don will be remembered for kindness, wry humor and dedication to living the Four Way Test. He was a dedicated bicyclist, (regularly riding his bike up State Street to our meetings), competitive runner, and benefactor to the arts. Click here for an article in MaineBiz celebrating Don.

Busted: Bruce Jones performed the drawing for $240 after the raffle supplies were momentarily misplaced, but the tides were against him. Next week we will draw for $250.

Upcoming Social: Jake Bourdeau announced that he is working on setting up a social event at The 317 Main Community Music Center in Yarmouth. Details to follow.
Flags for Heroes: Roxane Cole reported great progress on our goal of 60 Rotarian Flag Sponsors in the month of July. The Club has secured 58 at the time of writing. Our goal will be a lofty 90 non-Rotarian Flag sponsors. We need Rotarians to bring this wonderful opportunity to friends, co-workers, employers, and let them know how they can honor their hero. Painting Flag Bases: Jake Bourdeau announced that there would be an opportunity for Club members to help painting the flag bases for the Flags for Heroes Project. Participating members are asked to meet at Cyrus's warehouse door number 2 at 530 (121 Cassidy Point warehouse to the left of the office building) to finish painting the Flag bases.
Dominican Republic: Dave Small spoke about the planned January ‘24 return to the DR after 3 years without trips. 50 water filters have been secured for the trip, and there are plans to increase the total to 100 through a partnership with a California-based Rotary Club. See the Sea Dogs: Zach Newell announced an upcoming outing to be held at a Sea Dogs game in Section 211 as our Social for September. Tickets are $9 each, and 50 seats have been reserved. Contact Zach for a reservation.
Backpack Packers Needed: Amy Chipman announced an upcoming event to help pack the backpacks we need for the August 22nd “Back-To-School” event at the Boys and Girls Club. To accomplish our goal, please reach out to Amy about helping on Friday August 11th 10:45am to pack and organize all of the supplies. The packing event will be held at the Italian Heritage Club prior to our club meeting. On the event day, we need volunteers to drive the back packs over, set up in the gym from 1p-2p, and staff the event from 2p-4p. Amy will send out an email this week with a schedule for everything going on! (Photo: Amy)

Last Week's Program: Pat Panaia - Back Pain? Start a Company! | by Bruce Moore
This week's speaker was Pat Panaia, President of Kinotek. Her topic was the Startup Climate in Maine. Pat came with David Holomakoff, the founder of Kinotek, to help with her presentation. They prepared to demonstrate the tools that Kinotek has developed to address the common problem of musculoskeletal pain nearly everyone has experienced. She showed a chart that ranked it as the number one health care problem. In 2021, 420 billion dollars were spent on this problem. She and David next demonstrated how a person is assessed by studying the way his or her body moves by doing an overhead squat. She showed a widely used plastic measuring tool called an odiometer and discussed how limiting this tool is in identifying specific musculoskeletal problems. David explained they use a 3-D scanning camera that uses Lydor technology that utilizes light waves to measure a person’s movement. Pat stood in front of the camera and demonstrated three movements to measure a person’s movement ability. It records them to generate a detailed report including a 3-D muscular movement illustration by an avatar.
Pat explained the history of the company. Kinotek was founded in 2018 and she read about it in the newspaper. She was retired and thought she could help this startup and was also experiencing back pain so had a personal interest. She was hired because of her experience with startup companies. When the system was approved by the FDA, their sales took off! They were able to raise $1 million dollars matched by the State. Pat feels Kinotek has the opportunity to significantly improve the care provided by physical therapists, athletes and health club members. Pat said young entrepreneurs have great ideas but don’t know how to build a business. They need to learn about ethics and Rotary provides many opportunities for this kind of experience.
