Barbara Walsh is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, whose stories on William Horton Jr. and Massachusetts’ flawed prison furlough program are credited with changing laws and affecting the 1988 presidential election.
Her reporting over the years has also earned several national, state and regional awards, including the Yankee Quill for journalism excellence, commending her for being “a feisty project reporter who writes about important public matters … and has changed society for the better.”
Barbara is also the author of six books, including August Gale: A Father and Daughter’s Journey into the Storm, a dramatic true story about her Newfoundland sea-faring ancestors caught out to sea during a 1935 hurricane. Sammy in the Sky is also a true story about the loss of her family’s beloved hound. The book is illustrated by Jamie Wyeth. Her newest book, The Lobster Lady: Maine’s 102-Year-Old Legend is about Virginia Oliver, the oldest lobster trapper in Maine and in the world. Environmental Meeting: Ellen Niewoehner reminds everyone that there will be a meeting of the Protecting the Environment Committee (all are welcome!) on Friday August 25th at 11:15 AM at the Italian Heritage Club before our regular Rotary meeting. We have several upcoming events to discuss and plan:
September - Coastal Cleanup, date and location to be discussed.
October 3rd - Tree planting on Bayside Trail, jointly with TD Volunteers in conjunction with the TD tree planting grant awarded to Portland Rotary. TBD - Tour of Ecomaine? Ideas for the coming year!

Last Week's Program: Social at 317 Main, Yarmouth
Excellent turn-out and great fun up at our monthly social, August edition! Coordinated by Jake Bourdeau, Rotarians gathered at the new "Fox and Fiddle Cafe", 317 Main Street, Yarmouth, aka the Yarmouth Community Music Center. Guests were treated to live music, it's quite the set-up. Our socials are meant to just get-together and engage, get to know each other outside of the typical meeting format. Thanks Jake, and thank you Patty Byer for taking photos!
Normally we do not have a speaker, but this time we did have a special guest - Scott Freitag, a Rotarian from Park Rapids, Minnesota. Scott is on a personal journey to cycle the perimeter states in our country, raising awareness and fundraising for early prostrate cancer detection and schizophrenia, two issues that have impacted his life. Scott has been diagnosed with Stage 4 prostrate cancer, and had a son who took his own life last year.
INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE: Would You Like to Join Us in the Dominican Republic?
Roger Fagan has announced that the International Committee would like to invite any club member to join our team traveling to the Dominican Republic in January 2024. The goals of the trip are evaluation and treatment of hearing loss, fitting of prosthetic limbs created using 3D printers, and providing the gift of clean water and solar lights to sugar cane workers and their families. If you are interested contact Erik Grevin, or Roger Fagan to get more information.
