THIS WEEK'S SPEAKER -Dr. Ross Greene, "Lives in the Balance /Understanding Youth"
Ross is the originator of the Collaborative & Proactive Solutions (CPS) model, as described in his influential books The Explosive Child, Lost at School, Lost & Found, and Raising Human Beings, and the forthcoming The Kids Who Aren't Okay: The Urgent Case for Reimagining Support, Belonging, and Hope in Schools.
He served on the faculty at Harvard Medical School for over 20 years, and is now adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at Virginia Tech and in the Faculty of Science at The University of Technology Sydney in Australia. He is deeply involved in fund-raising efforts at Lives in the Balance, projects involving the CPS model. and Lives in the Balance documentaries and mini-documentaries.

Fun time at The Porthole in Portland, with our own DJ Jake B, offering his playlist of tunes in his homespun version of Music Bingo. The Porthole had the wrong channel, and told us there would be no Bingo for us, but Jake stepped in and remedied the situation with his phone and music app. Team Ross at Table Two took the series handily over Team Depke at Table One, though truth be told listening to tunes from Jake's phone was a bit difficult in a noisy bar. Who cares, the 16 of us in attendance had fun on a frosty winter night. Socials are a great way to meet and get to know your fellow Rotarians, so do your best to attend!
LET'S RAISE THE RINK!
This Sunday, March 1st, Rotarians from 6 different clubs, joined by family members and friends, will parade our "Flags For Heroes" at the Maine Mariners hockey game, Cross Arena, Portland.
Right now, we have approximately 40+ flag bearers.
Room for more, absolutely.
We're going to show a big crowd the Rotarian family honoring heroes of all kinds.
We'll also note that this game is listed as "High Demand", meaning it'll push over 5000 people. And, this just in, game is billed as a tribute to "First Responders". That means our display of flags is going to be right in sync. That's karma!
It’s going to be a great memory! The ticket to get into the game is $19.90 all in. We’ll be sending details to all registrants on where we’ll meet at the game and organize for our carry in-between the 1st and 2nd period. The ice is all shaved up and easy to walk, but know your limitations.
Great way to showcase Rotary and be proud of what we do!
LOBSTERS ROLL!Our Lobster Raffle finds new ways to prove successful. Our 1st place winners, Bill and Chris Shriver from Parker, Colorado were scheduled to receive their 8 Maine lobsters, when they heard about the terrible fire down on Custom House Wharf. Bill is a member of the Parker Rotary Club and Board Member of his town’s Fire Rescue program, and decided to donate his lobsters back to our Portland Fire Department. Coordinating with Bill Milliken, the lobsters were exchanged for six lobster rolls from Luke’s Lobster. (More practical!) NEW MEMBER NOTIFICATION: 2nd Notice Ashlee Vandiver has applied for membership, sponsored by Roger Fagan. Ashlee connected professionally to Roger, as she is the owner of Red Maple Audiology, and has twice served with the Fagans at The Good Samaritan Hospital in the DR. With this notice, Ashlee's application will move to the Board of Directors for vote. If any Portland Rotarian would like to offer a comment on a proposal, please contact Laura Young or Bowen Depke. It will be shared with the Board of Directors prior to a vote on the application.
How might I introduce someone to Rotary? Invite them to a Rotary activity, tell them why you joined, about the connections and impact that they can make through Rotary, and how they can grow with the organization. Growing our membership increases the good we can do.
