THIS WEEK'S SPEAKER:  Charlie Frair - “Yorktown, the Trap That Won A Nation”

Charlie Frair has been an active member of the Portland Rotary for more than 20 years.  He is a four-time Paul Harris Fellow and has played a leadership role in various Rotary projects, including the Veterans Luncheons and the Flags for Heroes Projects.

He was recently hired by American Cruise Lines to serve as a guest speaker on their ships about the Revolutionary War. While cruising this spring on the Chesapeake Bay, he visited the Yorktown battlefield and learned about what many consider to be the most important battle in the founding of our great democratic experiment.

He was so inspired by what he learned that he wants to share it with you.

BITS AND PIECES  | by Tom Talbott

TAKE A LOOK, A LOOK, A LOOK…. At Our Lobster Raffle! Bill Milliken's attention getting signage is paying off, as we've set a new one day high in sales!  The team of Ben Lowry, Mark Millar and Paul Tully topped $600 in sales and donations in one session, good going!  Our raffle raises money both for our club but a portion goes to the “Lift All Boats” program designed to get HS students work on the water - aka Lobstering. With hard work the program can fast-track obtaining a license, which is particularly hard to do in a crowded industry.

Captain Bill  is asking everyone to please take a slot on the  sign-up sheet: CLICK HERE.  We have fewer dates than last year, so we need to make the most of each day.

We set up on Commercial Street right across from Brickyard Hollow Brewery at 9 Commercial Street. Dates tie directly to cruise-ship arrivals. Each shift needs 1 person familiar with setup, plus 1-2 others. Two can do it; three is better—one can register buyers while the others keep selling.

LET'S TRIPLE DOWN!  Our club will be honoring Wally Camp Jr., owner of Rowe Ford Westbrook and Rowe Auburn, and importantly one of the community's strongest and most dedicated supporters of veteran support programs with a Paul Harris Fellow. Through the support of Wally and his son Mark, a Silver Star recipient, Rowe has invested some $25,000 into our Flags For Heroes program. This is just one of the many programs throughout the state that his team has supported.

We will honor Wally at the October 17th Rotary Foundation Event in Portsmouth. It will be a vibrant event featuring a number of special speakers on veteran issues. The program itself features the pairing of veterans in need with specially trained support dogs, to which our club has donated $1000.

Road Trip! See another side of Rotary.  For our PHF recipient, we're asking our club to turn out in force. Right now Justin Lamontagne,  Jerry Wall, Laura Young, Jake Boudreau, Art Howe, Paul Gore, Charlie Frair, and Tom Talbott are heading down. Let's try to triple that!  It's going to be a powerful event, and you'll see a whole other side of Rotary. Jerry is arranging a car pool and get some lunch together on the way. Join the caravan!

FOR MORE DETAILS and TICKETS - Click our Eventbrite Link.  Only $20, and under 18 no charge. Bring a young person, they'll always remember the day!  Plus we'll have our 250 American flags there-  let's show them how to hold them!

PREBLE STREET VOLUNTEERS: Volunteering at the Preble Street Food Security Hub Kitchen, 75 Darling Avenue, South Portland is underway. Dee Dee Fusco will be heading up our efforts to help Portland Rotarians sign up.

CHIPS AHOY!   “Snacks For Veterans” Zach Newell is asking for one person per month—to purchase approximately $125 worth of snacks each month and deliver them to the clinic at 141 W Commercial St, Portland. You will be reimbursed by club treasurer Ian Nagle, so please secure the receipt. Snacks must be individually wrapped (e.g., boxes of chips or crackers in single-serve bags, granola bars, or trail mix). Bulk stores like Costco, BJ's, or Sam's Club work great. Please select a month using this Google LinkGoogle Sheet link.

What are the Seven Areas of Focus that our Foundation addresses? Fifth is Supporting Education. Over three-fourths of a billion people over the age of 15 are illiterate. TRF addresses strengthening the capacity of communities to provide basic education and literacy, reducing gender disparity, and increasing adult literacy.
