This Week's Speaker: Mike McGovern - Update of Rotary International’s Efforts to Eradicate Polio
Mike McGovern joined Rotary in 1986 as a member of the Rotary Club of South Portland-Cape Elizabeth, Maine, USA. He has served as Club President, District 7780 governor, District Foundation chair, Rotarian Action Group chair, International Training Leader, RI Committee member and Chair, Trustee and Vice-Chair of the Rotary Foundation, and Director and Vice President of Rotary International. He has served in numerous other positions at the district, zone and international levels and has attended five councils on legislation in various roles. He currently serves as Chair of the International PolioPlus Committee and represents Rotary on the Polio Strategy Committee of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Mike serves on the board of PPH National Insurance Company, a subsidiary of Rotary International providing liability insurance coverage to Rotary clubs in the United States. He is a Major Donor to the Rotary Foundation and a recipient of the Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service and Distinguished Service Award.
Bridge The Gap To End Polio / Bridge Walk - Success!

Wearing bright red End Polio Now tee-shirts and hoodies and carrying banners, seventy Rotarians with friends and family lined the Casco Bay Bridge from Portland to South Portland to raise awareness of Rotary’s worldwide effort to eradicate polio. Our first annual Bridge the Gap to End Polio bridge walk ended at the Sea Dog Brewery, for a Pints for Polio fundraiser.
We were joined by District Governor Claudia Frost and members of the Rotary Clubs of South Portland-Cape Elizabeth, Bath-Sunrise, Freeport, Ogunquit, Westbrook-Gorham, Falmouth, and Brunswick.
It was an afternoon of raising awareness and funds for PolioPlus, and a time for fun and fellowship for the eight community Rotary Clubs. By all accounts, our first annual Bridge Walk was a big success!

Get a Kick Out of Our Boot Collection For Local Kids!
Not to be confused with our springtime Muddy Boot Auction!
We are partnering with the Portland School System to provide warm, waterproof winter boots to Portland Middle Schoolers. This effort is for students who are homeless and New Mainers. There is a huge need - the school system is looking for 175 pairs of boots!
We are reaching out to the Portland community for “gently used boots” for these students in need. We are looking for 150 pairs of boots for K through 5th grade (ages 5-11) and 25 pairs of boots for 6th through 8th grades (ages 12-14).
If you would like to donate money to the cause, click the donate button HERE. Portland Rotary will use these funds to purchase boots. If you would like to buy a pair of boots for the cause, go to Goodwill and purchase a pair and bring them to an upcoming Rotary meeting. Wish to drop off? Our friends at Lamey Wellehan Shoes will be accepting boot donations at their stores in Falmouth and Scarborough. Boots can be donated now through November 27th.
