The program this week is President Bruce Jones who will be delivering his valedictory, acknowledging the Club's accomplishments during his 18 month tenure and appreciating those who helped make his Rotary Leadership a success. Please plan to attend with your heartfelt congratulations for his job well done.

President Bruce Jones welcomed Rotarians to his second to the last meeting of the Rotary year. David Ertz led the Pledge of Allegiance. Cyrus Hagge gave the following short message from 16th century French writer François VI, Duc de La Rochefoucauld: “Old men delight in giving good advice as a consolation for the fact that they can no longer set bad examples.”
After lunch, Bruce Moore introduced the guests. Michael Taylor led the drawing for the $410 raffle selecting Cyrus Hagge, who was out of the room on the phone. After pausing his call for the chance to win the pot, his winnings were put on hold when his card draw was a bust.
FAMILY PHF: Patty Byers welcomed Bowen Depke to the podium to present a special Paul Harris Fellow Award to his wife Claire Depke. Bowen shared details of their love story over the years and celebrated Claire's volunteerism and spirit of adventure. In honor of the momentous milestone of their youngest son's high school graduation, Bowen touchingly and tearfully presented the Paul Harris award to the love of his life.
PTG PHF: Patty Byers also presented a Paul Harris Fellow Award to Paul T Gore for his printing support for the successful Polio Plus Bridge Walk. Thanks for all you do for Portland Rotary, PTG!
YOUTH SERVICE AWARD: David Putnam introduced PATHs teacher Amber Richard who presented a Youth Services award to senior Madelyn Stevens. Maddy chose Planned Parenthood of Northern New England for her charitable recipient. Dave also congratulated her parents Rich and Jamie Stevens for raising such a good model of service above self.
GERVIN GIVING: Portland Rotarian Gervin Gah gave a heartfelt speech of thanks to Rotarians in his home in Gabon and his new home of Portland, Maine for welcoming him, making connections, and helping him learn English. (Photo- Gervin)
INTERNATIONAL: Erik Greven gave an update on some of the projects the Portland Rotary Club contributed to around the world, such as an eye clinic in Northern India and oxygen making equipment. He asked people to let him know if they are able to attend his garden party at his home on June 29th to support international causes.
HEROES: Roxane Cole announced that the planning for the next Flags for Heroes has started and the event will take place September 7-21 in the Maine Mall. Contact Charlie Frair if you would like to help.

Last Week's Speaker Bill Nemitz | by Bruce Moore
When introducing our speaker, Dave Putnam stated that Bill was under an NDA, ‘Non Disclosure Agreement’. However, he encouraged him to “take a walk on the wild side” with Portland Rotary. Bill reiterated he’s under an NDA because his organization, the Maine Journalism Foundation, is seeking to acquire Maine’s largest media group.
He explained that local newspapers nationwide are closing or being bought and struggling to survive. They are threatened by an eroding business model resulting in diminishing revenues. This is causing a decrease in local information and having a negative impact on civic engagement and discourse.
He said how fortunate he was as a columnist with the Portland Press Herald and the Maine Sunday Telegram. He considered his most valuable experiences those where he found a Maine connection that took him to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, Iraq and Afghanistan with the Maine Army National Guard and Manhattan after 9/11.
Bill is president of the Maine Journalism Foundation, a non-profit news group. It is registered with the state as a non-profit and is applying to the IRS for 501c3 status. They plan to operate owned media not as a profit-driven company but as a mission-driven company. Bill asked us to consider making a donation at the website, mainejournalism.org.
