This Week's Speaker: Claudia Frost, Our District Gov!
We are proud to welcome District Governor 7780 Claudia Frost as our guest speaker this week. Claudia will present her vision and plans for our Rotary year.
As member of the Brunswick Rotary Club, Claudia's Rotary background is extensive. Here's a sampling of highlights: District Peace Scholar Chair, District Visioning Facilitator, Assistant Governor, global grants and international work, multiple terms as Club President, currently serving as Past President and Fundraising Chair.
While Claudia is involved with Rotary initiatives, she supports her husband Bill Allen’s work with Restorative Justice. Claudia also works locally with hunger prevention through Harpswell Food Truck, and literacy through the Reading Friends initiative.
Professionally, Claudia has degrees in Music Education, and Choral Conducting. She has conducted choirs at North Dakota State University, Hamilton-Wenham Regional Schools, Women Singing Out! in Portsmouth NH, and in several churches. She has sung in operas and musicals from Italy to Alaska.

President Bruce opened the meeting and Tom Talbott gave the invocation. He spoke about the upcoming move of his elderly parents to Maine and with all the variables involved, what could possibly go wrong? He said it was a good time to review Murphy's three Laws. Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Nothing is as easy as it looks. Everything takes longer than you think it will. He asked if people knew about Cole’s Law and no one did. He said, “Nothing to worry about. It’s just cabbage, mayo and carrots.”
Matt Tassey (R) led the raffle which provided John "Maddog" Marr (L) an opportunity to win, but, alas, the black three of clubs was drawn, not the lucky Queen of Hearts, and the pot gets bigger.
President Bruce shared the happy news that Maggie McGauley’s recently married Mike Hanson. Congratulations!
Dave Putnam (photo) requests that members let him know when meetings are scheduled before or after the regular Friday meeting so he can give an update to IHC.
Jan Chapman gave an update on Liz Fagan. She’s still at Mass General and will move to Maine Med when a bed becomes available. We will continue to keep Liz and Roger in our thoughts and prayers. Shout out to Bill Blount, recovering surgically from a bad accident to his hand via a table saw.
John Thompson (photo) reported out for Youth Services Committee that Lyseth School Reading will start the week of October 17th and we need more readers. Please contact John or Bob Clark if you would like to read to the kids.
President Bruce announced that plans are underway to replace the Portland Rotary road signs with up to date meeting information. He asks that Rotarians let him know where we have seen the signs. One is at the Forest Avenue exit near Deering Park. Have you seen other signs that need replacing?
BRIDGE THE GAP TO END POLIO WALK & SOCIAL - October 20th
Patty Byers announced that on Thursday, October 20th, we will meet at 3:45 pm at Sea Dog Brewing (formerly Easy Day) at 725 Broadway in South Portland and at 4 walk across the bridge, then back to Sea Dog Brewing for a Pints for Polio event. Sea Dogs will donate $1 for every pint sold. She thanked Maggie and Emily for their fantastic job promoting the event on social media and the website. Thanks also to Julie L'Heureux who will send out a press release about the event. Remember, no club meeting on Friday , so do your best to join us for this
event of fellowship!
We are encouraging everyone to wear red for the walk. Thanks to Paul Gore, who made red t-shirts and hoodies for the event. If you did not sign up for the free t-shirt or purchase the hoodie - you'll have to find your own red shirt!
WE NEED BOOTS
Amy Chipman had a follow-up to last week's announcement about a new "boots" project. Our club's Community Services Committee is collecting used boots for K-8th grade students in the Portland school system. They are looking for sizes 12 ½ children up to 12 adult. Monetary contributions are welcome also. She is planning an event to present the boots to the school. Please check your closets, garages, and basements for boots no longer in use, but still have good life left in them.
