Distinguished Citizen of the Year!

Global Grant for Education in India
Happy 2017!   I am reaching out to you to see if Hampton Rotarians would be interested in assisting with financial support for a Global Grant for education in India.   I have appreciated your club’s support of international projects in the past, and thought that this might be of interest to you.

This grant is to provide an e-learning opportunity for rural high schools in India (proposal is attached)  The program provides video lessons that correspond to content of the national curriculum are put on a jump drive and provided to the HS teachers.  Lessons are in Math, Science and English.  Each lesson is about 20 minutes - engaging and of good quality information.  Currently, the teachers spend the entire class time writing the information on the board and the kids copy it in their notebooks.  No time for actual teaching, let alone discussions or experiments or practice!   The grant provides the software (I’ve met the developers, they are terrific and work very hard to offer quality lessons, using good teaching techniques), the projector, a solar generator to keep it all going.  There is also teacher training in how to use the software - and how to now teach lessons rather than being a scribe of the textbook!  These schools are quite rural, usually just concrete block, often without electricity (hence, the solar generator)  But the kids and teachers and parents are incredibly appreciative of the support and do take great care of the resources.

The host club where the project will be implemented is Bangalore West and my club (Yarmouth) has agreed to be the international partner.  I know Bangalore West Rotary from when I was in India last spring - reviewing a similar project that they were doing.  The club is terrific, about 60 members and very active.  Though they are located in the city, they actively seek other areas of their state to implement projects and involve clubs in these more rural areas as partners who are actively involved with the schools served by the grant.  I am looking to raise a total of $10,000 in local club money, then request a matching amount from our district.

Attendance is documented weekly through our sign-in sheet at the front desk. If you can't make a meeting, (and most of us can't from time to time, we're all busy people) you have lots of opportunity to get credit by simply doing a make-up two weeks prior or two weeks after a missed meeting. Visit another Rotary club meeting, attend one of our board meetings, a committee meeting, participate in a service project (blood drive, soup kitchen, bell ringing, etc.) or one of our many fundraisers (Reach to the Beach, Golf Tournament, etc) or simply do an on-line make-up.

There are so many ways to receive a make-up, but don't forget to e-mail Paula Rappolt, our club secretary, the event you attended and the date at paula@bluewatermtg.com to have your make-up recorded.

Check out the link to all of our district's clubs meeting times and locations.  http://www.clubrunner.ca/Portal/Organization/Meetings.aspx?accountid=50088
